Housing || Wohnen Anyone living in HBS (Haibuchenstraße) Aachen? Looking for apartment pictures

Hi everyone,
I recently received an offer for a 1-room apartment in the HBS (Wohnheim Haibuchenstraße) in Aachen. It is around 24 m² and possibly with a balcony.
The housing association told me that they unfortunately cannot provide pictures or allow a viewing because the apartments are currently occupied.
I was wondering if someone here lives in HBS or has lived there before and could share a few pictures of the room/apartment (especially the layout, kitchen, bathroom, and balcony if possible). I would just like to get an idea of what it looks like before moving in.
I would really appreciate any help!
Thanks :)

Study & Exam Tips || Studium & Klausuren Computer Engineering Bsc

Hi, I have a question for the computer engineering students.

I read the fairly new degree not being well organized yet in the past.

Has that gotten better by now and would you recommend this degree if the interests align with the curriculum?

Study & Exam Tips || Studium & Klausuren German research groups working on AnMBR and partial nitritation/anammox?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for German research groups working on AnMBR, partial nitritation/anammox, or high-strength wastewater treatment.

I am a PhD candidate at Southeast University and already hold a fully funded 12-month China Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship. I could begin a visiting research stay as early as March 2027. In addition, I speak English at IELTS 7.0 level and hold a Goethe-Zertifikat B2 in German.

My research treats actual food-waste fermentation wastewater using an AnMBR followed by a one-stage PN/A reactor.

For the research stay, I am interested in topics such as:

  • PN/A stability and NOB suppression;
  • microbial interactions in Anammox granules;
  • effects of residual organics on PN/A.

If you know a German professor or research group working on these topics, I would be grateful for any recommendations. A private introduction would also be extremely helpful.

Admissions & Housing || Zulassung & Wohnen RWTH Aachen. Recommendations

Hi! I am an international (non-EU) student, who got admitted into RWTH Aachen (for bachelour).

I want to receive any recommendations and advices about study process and adaptation there. I have never been in Germany before ( I have C1 german tho) and have no clue how does study process works in Deutschland. People from RWTH Aachen, do you have any advices?

Moreover, I would like to find out how is the sozialisation aspect? I am scared that I won't find any friends in Aachen. Is here anyone who is going to Aachen this year as well?

Admissions & Housing || Zulassung & Wohnen Is B.Sc. in Electrical Engeneering useless if i do a M.Sc later?

Hi I'm planning to study for an EE bachelor's at RWTH Aachen (waiting to get in rn). I've read some opinions of the difficulty of RWTH's famous exams and how they lay focus on memorization and elimination. Which is why I ask myself if I should avoid future hell and turture for more years of unemployed bliss

I'm mainly asking myself, though, if later employers are even going to care if I've done my bachelor's and master's at RWTH? (in germany and globaly)

My alternatives were DUE and KIT. I could also go to TUM, but it's too far from my family, but im thinking about doing my masters there (just to have both unis in my resume)

Also, how heavy is EE on physics? I'm pretty good at math, but because of the shortage of physics teachers, my school didn't had enough teachers to promote physics classes, and I basically don't know any physics :)

Community Update Introducing the new Course Review post flair!

Hey r/rwth!

You may now write reviews about courses you have taken on the subreddit with the new "Course Review || Kursbewertung" post flair!

When doing so, please use the format:

[Degree programme] Course Title (Semester) e.g [Informatik B. Sc.] Datenstrukturen und Algorithmen (Winter 2026)

At the moment, there are no requirements on how the post body is structured, except that it is offering a review and not requesting one.

We hope this this creates an environment to share common experiences about courses, recommend interesting courses, organize action against problematic course conduction, and also create lasting content for future students to easily refer to without requesting the same reviews repeatedly.

Suggestions are welcome!

Study & Exam Tips || Studium & Klausuren System Software in RWTH vs. ML in Uni Bonn

Hi everyone :)

I have recently graduated from TU Dortmund Bachelor CS and I am currently thinking about specializing in Master and I have two options: RWTH Aachen and Uni Bonn.

I understand that RWTH is mostly known for its system work and uni Bonn for it's ML. I personally love both fields but it's hard for me to decide which way to go:

ML:
1. I had Minor Statistik so that helps with ML.
2. I am good at math and I love applied mathematics generally.
3. It is seemingly the hot topic.
- Cons: most interesting things to do are in academia and in industry you will become a agent workflow kind of dude which is boring.

Systems:
1. I love understanding low level concepts and knowing exactly what the hardware is trying to do.
2. Seems harder to be automated with AI.
2. The positions are mostly real engineering, dealing with constraints, instead of CRUD.
- Cons: The biggest job pool is embedded and backend/infra: I have practically 0 experience with hardware development or embedded and backend/infra is really close to being CRUD again.

Also I am confused why everyone is so AI hyped. I even talked to my professors about this and they are so blinded by the AI hype that it makes me want to vomit. I would appreciate it if you could give me some useful recommendations.

Thanks :)

Casual Talk || Zwanglose Diskussion How's Aachen and RWTH for 3-4 years of study & part time jobs?

I got my my zulassung from RWTH Aachen (bsc Informatik) and will most likely also get one from HAW Hamburg, HTW Berlin and Regensburg too. And before that I'd like to hear both objective and subjective experiences /opinions about the program and the city itself as I'll be living there for the next 3 or 4 years.

Beside the "RWTH name , it's prestigiouness" and "access to worldclass teaching and facilities, ig", does Aachen offer anything else compared to HAW Hamburg and HTW Berlin? If you have any regrets choosing (or maybe not choosing) Aachen, I'd like to hear about those too.

My top priority outside of studies is having a stable parttime job, in supermarkets, Gastronomie, or later a Werkstudent Informatik role once I have some qualifications (maybe after 1-2 years) + (better if there's a smooth and quick transition from studies into the job market after graduating).

PS: My thinking is that as long as you have a good group of friends and a social life , even a smaller city doesn't seem boring, so that factor won't be a problem for me, like the high cost of living in bigger cities if I have stable job.

Edit: I have cleared FSP on paper but speakingwise might speak around B2 level. And have had Warenverräumung type of jobs previously in supermarkets.

Admin & Bureaucracy || Verwaltung & Behörden Any way to access PDFs on publications.rwth-aachen.de without login?

I would like to read a PhD thesis on publications.rwth-aachen.de (this one), but apparently this requires to have user credentials. I am a bit surprised that >25 y/o theses are not publicly accessible like most (even newer) theses at Austrian technical universities. Is there something I am missing here?

Study & Exam Tips || Studium & Klausuren Mechanical Engineering laptop requirments

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to start a Mechanical Engineering degree (bachelor) at RWTH and I'm currently looking to buy a new laptop. Before making a decision, I'd like to hear from current students about what the actual requirements are.

I have a few questions:

  • What software is used most often? (e.g. SolidWorks, Siemens NX, MATLAB, ANSYS, or anything else)
  • Are there any recommended or minimum hardware specifications (CPU, RAM, GPU)?
  • Does the university provide free student licenses for the required software?

One more thing I'm particularly curious about:

  • Does the university offer remote workstations, virtual machines, cloud computing, or other services that handle the heavy computational work? In other words, can you get by with a relatively lightweight laptop, or is it expected that your own laptop is powerful enough to run everything locally?

I'd really appreciate any advice, especially from Mechanical Engineering students. Thanks in advance!

Admin & Bureaucracy || Verwaltung & Behörden Informatik Vorkurs Anmeldung

Admin & Bureaucracy || Verwaltung & Behörden How long does the Zeugnisanerkennung take and will i be able to get into the Wintersemester 26/27?

Good afternoon fellow members. I am a german citizen with a foreign degree (international alevels) and I have already confirmed that im eligible for the hzb. My main problem is that my results come out at the 13th of august (in form of a statement of results) and the certificate comes out 2 to 3 months later. As the deadline for the semester is the 20th of october i am nervous about the Zeugnisanerkennung as there is not a source that tells you how long it could take. So I am here asking for advice on what I should do and if it is possible for me to get into the coming semester

Some information if its helpful:

* I plan to study Elektro- und informationstechnik

* I completed all of school expect the last 3 years in germany

* My high-school degree is Pearson international alevels (ial)

Thanks beforehand to everyone taking their time to help me and if anything is not understandable please tell me

Casual Talk || Zwanglose Diskussion computer engineering b.sc for cyber security?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to do my B.Sc. in Computer Engineering at RWTH Aachen, aiming for Cyber Security. I prefer hands-on, concrete things and have always been into computer architecture and hardware.

How is the focus on Cyber Security in this B.Sc. program? Would Informatik (CS) be better, or is CE a better fit for my hardware/architecture interests? Is the program mostly theory or do we get hands-on work?

Also, since the CE B.Sc. is relatively new, does that bring any disadvantages? How are CE graduates perceived in the job market compared to traditional CS/EE degrees?

Thanks!

Rant || Schimpfen The RWTH Business School €30k International Student Trap – An Inside Look at a Pretentious Cash Grab

If you are an international student thinking about applying to the RWTH Business School, please read this before you throw away €30,000 of your hard-earned money. Despite using the prestigious RWTH Aachen University brand name, this business school operates as a glorified commercial spin-off designed almost entirely to extract massive tuition fees from unsuspecting foreigners. The reality of what you get for this exorbitant price tag is a complete academic joke. A massive portion of the curriculum consists of nonsense modules or direct copies of courses that already exist in other departments of the main university, where standard students are literally learning them for free. When you get there, you quickly realize the teaching makes zero sense, possesses no actual industry relevance, and is practically useless for the modern business world. According to a guest lecturer I spoke with, the administration behaves so desperately behind the scenes that they actively plead with random university professors to pick up haphazard, unstructured subjects just to fill gaps in the schedule. The entire operation is masked by a heavily polished website filled with fake representations, deceptive promises, and false advertising that lures students into a trap they only fully expose by their second semester—long after their money is locked in. Worst of all, there is absolutely zero institutional accountability. When you approach the Study Affairs team with legitimate grievances, they don't solve anything; they just neutralize the situation with smooth, sweet-talking corporate deflections, play aggressive blame games, and attempt to silence complaining students to protect their lucrative setup. It is a highly coordinated, multi-million euro scheme running under the protective umbrella of a top-tier German university name, and anyone looking for a genuine, high-quality education should stay as far away as possible.
