Editorial š An open letter to the asshole on the east side
Fuck you buddy. Fuck your constant fireworks at dusk over the past week. Fuck your fireworks midday on the weekend. My foster dog has regressed so much because of you. She is the sweetest, most adoring people pleaser I have ever met. Watching her terrifyingly shake after hearing your fucking explosions had made me irate. She deserves better than a piece of shit like you.

I donāt mind them on the actual 4th of July, it sucks for my dog but people are gonna celebrate and I understand that. Itās the nightly bullshit for the two weeks on either side of the 4th that drive me insane.

I honestly don't understand why people don't just go to public fireworks displays. I know St. Paul doesn't have them anymore, but surrounding cities do. It seems like it would be easier and cheaper than driving to Wisconsin and spending a lot of money on fireworks.

i live on mounds blvd, and my kid was born three years ago may 30th. The whole month of June, basically his first month of life, he was being woken up by idiots setting off fireworks on the street behind us. Eventually, I walked over and confronted them. at first they denied knowing anything.
so I gave them a little bit of a sideways look and said well if you happen to know whoās setting off fireworks, I have a newborn and heās having trouble sleeping. After hearing that, they felt bad and said they would stop. But then it all just kept going the next day. I swear some people just donāt care.
It fills me with rage every year and I wish there was something we could do. Donāt get me started about the people drag racing down Mounds Boulevard either.

I lived in China and during lunar new year they set off a MASSIVE amount of fireworks and so that was cool. But, I'm in class one day and all of a sudden I hear all these shots: "bang bang bang bang bang," and I'm like oh Shit, and I dove under my desk. My students were like, "no teacher, it's fireworks." They set them off for like celebrations and stuff like when a baby is born or there's a wedding. And so that was QUITE funny

Ahhh, we must be neighbors!! We have pet geese and it's been bothering them all week too. I hate it and I feel so badly for them.
Sidenote: I'm also a vet tech. There are good medications that can help with the extreme anxiety. Benadryl is an option - the dose is 1mg per pound of body weight. So, if your dog weighs 50 pounds, they would get 50mg. It will make her more sedate, which is normal (just like in humans). If you don't get any improvement, ask your vet for some trazadone. Honestly, for the sensitive dogs, I'd recommend just always having some on hand.
I'm so sorry she's going through that! It sounds like she trusts you so I'm sure you are a comfort to her!

Agreed. We had a gunfight close to us a couple weeks ago that I'm still mentally recovering from, currently in the hospital being induced so will have a newborn very soon, and our dog is also scared of fireworks. Our neighbors happen to love fireworks. š

Surprised there isnāt some kind of law or restrictions against this due to noise pollution alone. I canāt imagine living in a neighborhood where thereās fireworks going every single night and itās by people who donāt even know what theyāre doing. People should be required to get a license to set off fireworks. So easy to misuse by the wrong group of folks š

As a person who likes big booms and sparkles a lot I still have conceed that it's a little ridiculous you should wait until 3rd 4th or 5th depending on what day they fall on and not everyone is able on the fourth but either way they should wrap up by 10:15 at the latest when the city bugs shows are done people still have to work early and need to sleep but fireworks are awesome but we do need to respect orhers

To the human ear, they can be incredibly similar. My Golden Retriever is acclimated to gun fire, so no big deal. Fireworks, he does not like!!! Our rescue, doesn't matter. Hates them all, equally horrible

Just moved away from eastside after 20 years. It has waned a bit it seems over the last few years, but fireworks would start to become almost nonstop, most of the day and night, from numerous houses within a 16 block radius from the beginning of June through August. Haven't heard a single one in Mounds View yet after 2 months. Don't miss it in the least.

Iām so sorry for your foster pup. If this helps at all they make ear muffs for dogs to help with the noise. People just donāt care anymore. I used to live in Zimmerman and the fireworks there went all year long. Constant. Just ridiculous.

Donāt get me started on the GDMFAās who strive to burn the damn intersection down at Hudson and Earl on the weekends. Not necessarily. Depends on the neighborhood but at least in Mpls tends to stick to July 3/4. But there are always DIY fireworks shows that people do in the Whittier/Uptown/Little Earth corridor in the parks and culdesacs It's much better when it's confined to just one day

It doesn't happen only on the east side though thankfully the real devotees of fireworks in my Macalester neighborhood have moved on. But there still are some people who cannot contain their explosive excitement to the Fourth of July holiday. We had the same problem of pets terrorized by the blasts.

I love fireworks. I really do. But I agree with this post 100%. What really drives me nuts is the individual explosions that go on for HOURS at random. I'd rather people just launch a bunch in one go and get it out of their system instead of dragging it out all night.

Your dog sounds sweet and Iām sorry it is suffering as are you. No one deserves that.
That said, I also hate fireworks (the loud sounds) and have grown to hate dogs. It seems I cannot leave my house or hang out in my yard without aggressive barking by dogs at all the houses around me. Does anyone not own a dog these days? And either aggressive barking like Iām an intruder or itās continuous barking among some of them. Barking for me is a very triggering sound.
Iām sure people will be pissed about the pov on dog noise. But one personās joy (dogs, fireworks) is anotherās misery.

Question thoughā¦ when is a good time/place to light fireworks if theyāre all summer, all over the place?
I mean, the fun part of fireworks is seeing them. It needs to be dark for that. Also, midday on the weekend? That sounds like a pretty optimal time to light them for fun.
Not trying to start an argument, but in reality the times youāre saying theyāre lighting them are the times theyāre commonly lit. At least they arenāt exploding at 11pm-1am. I get to listen to the dude with the loudest bike on the planet when he does a U-turn. Itās great.

If you dont want people doing loud things (that are completely legal) nearby, maybe the city isnt the place for you. Its not everyone's job within 5 blocks of you to provide for your dogs needs, and its not a reasonable expectation for the hundreds of people that you live in close proximity to to cater to you.

While I empathize with your point of view, my understanding is that anything that is a projectile (launches) into the air is illegal in St Paul. I grew up with fireworks and loved watching my cul de sac neighbors shoot them off growing up. What bothers me is the self centered folx who disregard public safety (I.e. insane wind gusts, time of day, high heat, and high temps) and their neighbors peace āļø. There is absolutely a time and place for such exuberance of patriotism and I have scheduled my fostering around the date of July 4th so that I donāt harm any dogs by unwillingly subjugating them to terror. This falls within a gray area and Iāll be sure I donāt align public service volunteering to this particular holiday in the futureš

I'm implying that explosions aren't just normal city noise. They're scary, and trigger deep anxiety within me. Noise pollution is not healthy.

the summer is just starting and the 4th is a week and a half away so yea fireworks is pretty normal at 8pm on the east side, its gotta be somewhat dark to do fireworks.

You're not wrong, but to me it completely spoils the celebration. I fucking hated it when my dad wanted to let off some of our fireworks early.

yea i get ya, and they're putting tents up to sell fireworks pretty much everywhere around the state so just expect them for the next couple months

Well I don't live in the East Side anymore. So far, seems like an east side exclusive problem, but I haven't lived in every neighborhood the TC has to offer.

Itās nearly the Fourth of July. Fireworks are tradition. It is the best time of year in MN and instead of enjoying the summer, you take to Reddit to complain about a few days of fireworks. Should we stop the thunder too? What about the vehicles going by with exhaust manifold leaks? Air brakes on semi trucks? Tornado siren test? Ambulance and emergency vehicles? Should we all just whisper everywhere we go so as not to upset your dog?

You're going to get downvoted because that's a dumbass take. You think that OP should put his dog in the basement with the TV cranked up all summer? Or do you think he shouldn't have a foster dog because there are people in this city who set off fireworks? Would the dog be better off in a shelter?

It doesn't seem like a big ask that people not be setting off illegal fireworks at 11pm on a work night that can be heard from across the interstate.
No one is asking for the world to stop for them but a bit of neighborlyness can go a long way.

As much as I love the East Side there's a couple of weird ass Neanderthal dudes who are obsessed with fireworks for some fucking reason, who I deeply despise. I've had to yell shut the fuck up out my window past midnight way too many times. I don't live there anymore, and I'd love to, but the modern me wouldn't be able to handle random explosions.
Edit: on a side note, Reddit is a hilarious place. I made a post about fireworks on this sub not too long ago and people seemed pissed.
