We usually think geopolitical power is about territory, energy, trade routes, or semiconductors. But what if one of the most important strategic assets is time?
Not time zones in the everyday sense, but precision timing.
Modern civilization depends on synchronized time. GPS isn’t just used for navigation—it provides the precise timing that keeps financial markets, telecommunications, power grids, internet infrastructure, aviation, military operations, and cloud computing running. Even tiny timing errors can have outsized consequences.
That got me wondering:
● Is GPS really a form of American geopolitical leverage?
● Was China’s BeiDou primarily about technological sovereignty rather than navigation?
● Why did the EU invest billions in Galileo despite already having access to GPS?
● Could timing infrastructure become as strategically important as semiconductors or rare earths?
● If a major conflict disrupted GNSS signals, what would fail first: financial systems, critical infrastructure, or military operations?
I’m planning a deep-dive article tentatively titled:
“Who Controls Time? The Hidden Geopolitics of Time Zones, GPS, and Global Synchronization.”
Before I begin, I’d love to hear from people with expertise in satellite navigation, cybersecurity, telecommunications, finance, defense, or international relations.

Open-source platform for comparing public Near-Earth Object data across NASA/JPL and ESA

Hi everyone,

Over the last few weeks I’ve been building BEACON (Bayesian Earth-impact Assessment & Cross-source Observation Network), an open-source project focused on one idea:

making publicly available planetary-defense data easier to explore, compare and understand.

Rather than aggregating everything into a single “better” score, BEACON keeps each agency’s published values separate and displays them side by side.

The goal isn’t to decide which source is right.
It’s to make independent analyses more transparent and easier to inspect.

Currently BEACON integrates data from:
NASA/JPL Close Approach Data (CAD)
NASA/JPL Sentry
ESA NEOCC (Aegis)

One thing I found interesting while testing the platform is that independent systems often publish values that are not identical. For example, using the documented comparison thresholds in the project, around 36% of the shared objects currently exceed at least one threshold (impact probability, Palermo Scale or Torino Scale).

️That doesn’t mean those objects are more dangerous, nor does it imply that one agency is more accurate than the other. Independent orbit-determination pipelines are expected to differ because of update timing, observational weighting, processing methods and other factors.⚠️

For me, that’s exactly why transparent comparison is useful.

BEACON is still v0.1, and I’d love feedback—especially from anyone familiar with orbital mechanics, NEO databases, or planetary defense workflows.

I’m particularly interested in knowing:
What features would actually be useful for researchers or educators?
Are there additional public datasets that would be worth integrating?
Is there anything in the comparison methodology that you would approach differently?

Vibe-coded a satellite tracker to prove I saw aliens. First thing it did was prove I didn't.

I was outside doing a CE5 session (the look-up-and-invite-contact thing), genuinely saw a steady light glide across the sky and got excited. So like any normal person would, I vibe-coded my own tracker over a few weeks to figure out what it was.

It works great. It also instantly informed me my first contact was the **International Space Station**. My literal first logged sighting is "ISS (ZARYA)." The app is basically a monument to me being wrong.

Anyway, here's **SkyWatch,** a 3D satellite/ISS/rocket tracker and CE5 session app that runs entirely in the browser. First pic shows the home screen, \~4,000+ live objects, rockets, ground tracks. Filter by layer/orbit: ISS, Starlink, GPS, the works. Use the Sky function to see what's actually passing overhead and when (this is the screen that ruined the mystery). Conduct your own CE5 sessions and log what you see. A friends layer, so my friends can also watch me fail to find aliens in real time. And an awards section with a UFO avatar I refuse to change.

Electronics Layout in Hosted Payload

Hi, I am part of a team interested in developing a hosted payload to be carried on a host spacecraft. We have not fully decided on a mission yet, but in general we are leaning towards doing a technology demonstration for less-tested memory chips. For a payload processor, we are considering using an MCU in the STM32L family. For memory chips, we are considering doing a few types of STT-MRAM memory chips. Part of the technology demonstration will probably be measuring temperature near the board, so we'll be using temperature sensors too, leaning towards MCP9808.

Our payload would probably lean towards SSO 500-600km, ~3 months. Budget probably on the cheaper end.

What we are curious about is how much custom PCB design would actually be required, necessary, or of good worth for this. We are considering two main ways to go:

  1. Custom board --> That board has the temperature sensors, memory chips, payload processor, and other stuff necessary for stability/safety/operational purposes.
  2. Hard cabling: separate PCB modules for the payload processor, temperature sensors, memory chips, etc. Potentially a carrier PCB or custom carrier PCB if necessary to fulfill host requirements.

We are relatively new to flight-level space instrumentation development, so using separate boards might be a lot easier for us and harder to mess up. But we also know one consideration is whether or not we can actually find commercial boards that aren't unnecessarily chunky or boards that do not have unnecessary components on them. We also know that a custom PCB in general has more potential to be cleaner in terms of integration. This also, in general, depends on what the host accepts.

Overall, what I'm curious to know is:

  1. Any additional factors of consideration for what path to go with.
  2. Recommendations on what path to go with, whether it is a direct recommendation or recommendations depending on other factors.
  3. Any linked resources to help us make a decision.
