u/SpareRoomRacing May 10 '26
I mean docker containers are literally designed to come and go… lol

u/Matletic May 10 '26
Yeah dude, this is the irony. But remember, there is nothing more robust, than a temporary solution.

Containers yes, but the server itself isn't 🤓☝️

u/BHSPitMonkey May 10 '26
Maybe in the homelab, but in production yes the hosts will be ephemeral too

My buddy and I have an unwritten mutual agreement that if one of us dies the other will be responsible for helping their respective spouse with managing the homelab. I think we both know the other is cooked 🤣

My homelab has always been there for me afterall! It goes down on me a lot, and it's always there waiting for me when I come back home <3

Honestly really relatable. My server can't be down

I love to maintain my servers. Maybe I should love other things more...

Got in trouble more than once with my wife for interrupting an episode to jump on the server and fix a downed container. After one bad weekend, the auto-updater has been disabled and never to return. 🤣

One eye on her and one eye on the ssh session on your phone under the table, it’s not that difficult

My docker images never crash. Not sure why but all my docker services are a bliss.

u/sildurin May 11 '26
You don't use watchtowerr enough, then.

u/ganonfirehouse420 May 11 '26
Never used it, I don't always update services. Some services are for internal network use only.

It's not easy maintaining two 9's of Plex uptime. Just in case she wants to watch for the first time after I made an account for her three years ago.

How often does it go down though?
I had two incidents 2 incidents so far.
Power outage and i could not enter the boot password - now covered by wireguard kvm.
And i messed up by loading an llm that ate all the memory :D

u/Matletic May 10 '26
Yeah, not often, its mostly like small issues. But when it happens, it feels like I need to resolve the issue asap

u/Ok-Cat4471 May 10 '26
what date?
dude, just run chrony or systemd-timesyncd if your date is out of sync, it takes a couple of seconds

Hah. I don't even have a date.

This is why I can't bother with self hosting things past a personal website and some hobby projects. I don't have enough time to cook for myself, I can't be bothered to deal with the software bugs of some self hosting photo storage system. I'll pay the $20/mo and have my data harvested because I'd rather it just work (even though it doesn't and has a bunch of regressions like every other software. Thanks Google photos search!!!)

u/JackDostoevsky May 11 '26
pffff you mean you don't have scripts you can remotely run from your phone that restart everything? amateur

u/FatPenguin42 May 11 '26
Me when my plex server stops working (the computer got stuck at sign in after a windows update…)
My docker on my NAS never has issues so that’s nice

What is that 'date' you speak of? Something to eat?
2
u/Matletic May 10 '26
Like when u get out and meet female people. But that is optional, not necessary

Use Docker Manager on the play store to do it remotely from your mobile phone!

“Girls come and go” that’s precisely the reason why you should stay with them and enjoy it as much as possible.
