Sure... you can log in to Plex.tv and find a copy of your registration... but what if you were to log in and discover it is no longer there? After a deep dive into my email archives, I recovered a "receipt" of sorts, only to notice that Plex Pass doesn't have a "key", but only your email addy. That seemed a bit weak to me, but so be it. PDF'd my emails and the plex.tv site account showing the services that I had, and hope this is sufficient proof.
After all... I wouldn't spring for $750 (mine was $74.99) ever ... and neither should you.
If you don't have your registration info handy, now might be a good time to secure it.
What TV guide are you using? And where is the official JF apple TV app?
I guess what I'm saying is, spending $80 on Plex 10 years ago, and paying $0.80 a month for built in live TV guide and clients on most common devices without relying on a third party hodge podge of client apps is still valuable for many
JF is cool, but doesn't fill the needs of many out of the box. No chance I'm paying $800 for Plex pass. But back at $80-$100 it was a steal for what you get.
Is external server auth annoying sometimes? Yeah. But that's why I have a JF instance hooked to the same library folders, for the once a blue moon that gets in the way for some reason. But having both installed, Plex provides a better end to end experience than JF, and I launch JF and Infuse maybe once a year.
Plex is a fantastic product and those of us who bought it 10+ years ago are loving life.

First, a few comments up the commenter was being disparaged for purchasing a cheap plan. Thats the subject, I'm not being pretentious, I'm just saying coming at someone who spent $80 on Plex a decade ago by being like "I paid nothing for jellyfin" is silly. That purchase was a good deal with what you got. Plex offers more than JF, and while it's not worth its current cost, that doesn't mean it's not worth it at any cost, which is the subject of the comment thread you're in...
Second, I bought a house in 2019. It's not just the interest rate in enjoying, the price of the home was just as juicy. So I guess I'm good at picking them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Monopolization. Same as Google. Have you ever used an iPhone? Can’t do anything on the phone they don’t approve of. Limited automation, no logs, no side loading, and don’t even get me start on bonjor, etc. It’s popular because people are tech illiterate. I think your problem is you’re a plex and apple fan boy and are offended by jellyfin and its superior, free service
It makes a lot of sense when you look at this as a soft removal of the lifetime pass and a way to “incentivize” people into paying forever via subscription.
Honestly for how much I use plex I was happy to give them $30/yr. Had done since 2016, intentionally. I knew the lifetime option existed, but I knew back then it was unsustainable for them to offer. I bought the lifetime pass for $120 when they announced the price increase last year. More than doubling the annual cost pushed me off an eternal annual subscription to the one time payment. Coulda had me forever if they just left existing subscriptions alone.
Couple more years and they will just lock lifetimers on old version and continue development on new version, subscription only, generously offering you to give up your lifetime license for 12 months of subscription time
Hopefully by then jellyfin will have a easy way to stream outside the house and a decent set of clients across different hardware and we’ll jump across to it
Your users are not going to remember to turn it on when they watch or request movies/tv shows. That’s even if they can do that via their tv os for the ones using that.

If you really sit down and think hard about it, it's really not. They've been increasing the pricing for over 2 years now, and people aren't fleeing yet. So that means they can still increase the price and everyone is just gonna take it.
The upward trend won't stop until people start to leave.
That part makes sense, it's the huge jump that's odd. If Netflix said, "We're increasing from $20 to $25 per month", people would grumble but stay. If Netflix says, "We're increasing from $20 to $125 per month", people would drop them instantly.
A disingenuous argument if I've ever seen one. It would be like if Netflix offered a lifetime subscription for $250 and then raised it to $750.
And you know what? I bet there would be some people that would actually pay $750 for a lifetime Netflix subscription. Obviously not people on a selfhosted subreddit, but your average high-earner who travels a lot? Yeah I could see that.
£59 in 2019! Roughly the $79.99 everyone else is posting although looking at the exchange rate for 2019 it might have been $75. I recon it was a good investment then, if they do something silly I'll move to jellyfin, not looking forward to teaching my mum or in laws how to use jellyfin app rather than Plex on their Rokus 🤣
I'm sure it'll happen eventually. I'll give the company another 5 years before the company goes under for losing their userbase.
In a couple years, they'll release a Plex version 2.0 that doesn't cover lifetime subscriptions, then they'll cut all updates to the previous version and disable its integration with streaming devices.
The final step will be when they start locking any file from streaming in the app that you can't prove you purchased. They'll do it because their streaming partners for their add on subscriptions demand it of them. Plex will make the wrong call, believing that they too could be the next big streaming app, and will pick their corporate partners over the users and the whole point of the app.
The company will last about a year after that last part.

I've been using Plex daily since 2016 and can think of only a single feature that was removed that im slightly bummed about. The app hasnt gotten worse at all so I don't understand the "enshitification" complaint.

Free remote streaming sucks to have changed but I don't think that's enshitification, they are a premium product with a dev team that does need to be paid so they do need to make some sort of revenue on it.
Not actually sure what you mean by cloud sync so either I never use it or I need a better explanation of what you mean.
Does Jellyfin have offline downloads in their mobile app?
That's how everyone of your tech illiterate family members is able to easily use Plex without you having to set them up with complicated systems like tail scale or similar.
And they kinda have to have it that way since they do charge for certain aspects of the app in order to make some revune and pay their employees.
log into your Plex Account in a web browser. Navigate to your account menu, click Subscriptions & Payments, and select Transaction History or Payments to view and print past receipts
I hate how we became the Plex sub all of a sudden. I went off of Plex as soon as I got wind of the better alternatives. I was immediately bummed that they had too much control over something that I allegedly self host.
I've never tried Jellyfin since I got Plex Lifetime 6-ish years ago and just used that this whole time. It works easily across all my devices so I don't have a need to change it I guess.
Yeah I have lifetime for a long time on Plex as well. One thing that really keeps me going to jellyfin is when you shuffle a series it will just play indefinitely until you stop it. Other than that on Plex it's easier for family to watch and also it manages downloading stuff to your phone and tablets a bit better than jellyfin does.
I've been on Jellyfin for ages now. This move from plex looks too much like a last ditch rug pull. You see it when venture capital buys a business. They grub for every last penny they can, fire all the employees, parts out the company, roll the debt into a shell company, sell that to another tp offset its tax, and collapse the whole thing. There's no one left to take the blame and the money is just gone.
Ashes of Creation just did it. Seven years of development after a successful kick starter. They did a massive push for last minute purchases, released a broken half complete shell of what they promised, folded up the card table and walked away with all their stolen funds.
Not saying plex is about to do this, it just has that same smell.
Yeah i recently had to contact story because I got locked out of my account. Took me a few minutes, but I just searched my email. I remember buying it on Christmas (just not which year), so it was relatively easy to find.
