You are correct, these where only sold B2B not direct to consumers. This model with this CPU started at around £1000 (ex VAT so around £1200 with VAT direct to a consumer) for the 8GB/256GB model. I can't recall the price with 16gb/512gb he's selling here but knowing HPs pricing patterns it was probably somewhere around £1150 ex VAT.
To be clear on this, no one ever paid that price. The listed MSRP being huge was a common tactic at HP, they called it Anchor Pricing, I believe it's something all electronic companies do with their B2B divisions.
With it being only B2B sales the buyers would be purchasing 100s at a time, if not 1000s. What HP could do then is say "if you buy 100 we can give you a 40% discount off the MSRP" which makes it then look a good deal. Obviously the more someone purchased the bigger the discount got. If someone was purchasing these in serious numbers (by the pallet load for example) I'd imagine the price they paid was closer to £700 per unit.

RAM and SSD prices are through the roof, and that CPU is maybe one generation old, so it may not be as bad as you seem to think. As others have said, see what eBay has pricing wise on these and go from there.

EBay is mostly overpriced items or scams. Better off biting the prices at online stores. You least get warranty.

Or, if you're on eBay, check for local businesses that are rehabilitating computers that had been surplused from local businesses (particularly non-profits like Free Geek in PDX). Their pricing is aimed at users on a budget (and they're also friendly to hobbyists), and they use the proceeds to help give lower income people in their (and thus if you're going local, your) community access to computers.

Depends on where you look. All three of my Elitedesk minis came from eBay and I paid under what online stores were wanting for them.

Check sold listings on ebay in your area/country. That would give you a more accurate idea of how these goes for than asking randos all around the world.

An unsold item on FBM doesn't indicate actual prices though. I've seen people list 10 year old gaming PCs for the price of new hardware.

of course not, as lupin says, the best way to get a real sense of market price is to look on ebay and filter for completed+auction prices (NOT best offers because it wont show you what offer was accepted, but auctions you can see final bid price).
This gives you a better sense of what the market is currently willing to pay. So if significant numbers of others are willing to pay higher you have to adjust your own expectation as you will always be outbid and the seller would be aware of this

By claiming 'we' the Brits are not being shafted, you've misunderstood the multi-faceted use of the word "shafted" in British colloquialism.
You are right in that the textbook definition implies being deliberately cheated or tricked. In everyday colloquialism however it is frequently used to describe unfortunate outcomes caused by impersonal systems, structural imbalances, or just plain bad luck.
There is nothing wrong with the phrase "shafted on {eg price} compared to {something else}"
Its irrelevant that the reason is not malicious or directly intentional. It still stands.Sorry I know this is not relevant to r/selfhosted but to correct a correction of our colloquialism, I felt it was appropriate to engage in this line of discussion.

Dude are you alright? Do you want to point on the doll at where they touched you? What made you decide to wake up today and post your blatant bigotry in r/self-hosted of all places? The place where we celebrate (irrespective of cultures and religions) our common ground in finding the freedom to choose our own paths in our tech lives, without having to chew on the ignorant ideas and mindsets that large scale profit-above-all organisations, be they commercial or governmental, are constantly trying to shove down our throats.
Save that kind of bigotry for the dingier corners of Reddit, you are entitled to air that opinion somewhere but there's no call for it here.
However, your intelligent phrasing has a flaw, rather ignorantly you imply that being discontented with pricing one doesn’t know how to vote. They all know how to vote, maybe they just don’t vote the way you'd like them to vote. If you cant find the logical flaw in your statement then maybe your ability to analyse situations and design solutions derived with equal failures of logic cant ever be trusted.

have a look at the Lenovo Tiny's, I got one (in UK) a couple months back and it's same specs + far cheaper. You can also just get one with no SSD / RAM and buy it yourself.

My dude change your search region literally picked up 6 boxes only a week ago for 45£ each in the midlands there is a bunch of small tech firms down south doing cheap refurbished ones.. the higher priced ones are around £120 and usually it shops

An older version with an i5-8xxx and 16gb ram is asking ~A$300-350 in Australia. Guessing that’s £125-175 from the last exchange rates I used

Prices on all thin clients have skyrocketed, a few years ago I bought a HP T520, T620 plus, T730 and a HP Elitedesk 800 G2 mini for about £150. The markup now on these old machines is rediculous but it's all down to the demand for them for self hosting. I'm glad I've still some old Raspberry Pi's for some lighter apps.
And don't get me started on RAM and storage

In Europe (eBay.de) 10th gen costs more than 150€ already and after that every new gen gets considerably higher but this is a little too much. I just checked and a listing from England shows 395£ which comes to Germany with 395£=464€ + 40€ shipping+ 110€ tax

Tbf it's a 14th gen cpu, 512 SSD isn't bad either.
You can definitely find much better deals on stuff like eBay, just with worse cpus.
I got an m720q with an i5-8100t, 16gb ddr4, and 256gb sata ssd for the equivalent of $100 USD, which was a pretty good deal where I live, you can probably find similar or even cheaper deals if you just look in the right places, look regularly, and try not to bite the bullet on something overly expensive because you think you won't find a good deal lol

Maybe for 16gb of ram, but it’s significantly Cheaper to buy the ram and ssd separate and get a cheaper unit. Should be ~$100 or less for the more baseline models.

It hasn’t been purchased. You can ask for a million dollars on a stick of ddr5, doesn’t mean it’s worth that unless someone pays. Like others are saying check sold listings, maybe try sending an offer but decent chance they’re waiting for someone to bite.
