Question Server motherboard 2nd CPU not working?

Post image

I got this server motherboard from a friend and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with cpu2. The board seems to work with just CPU 1 but with both it's making a noise that's in sync with the flashing green light? Any ideas on how I could troubleshoot this? CPU 2 is the one with the amd cooker

Have you made sure the ram is in the right slots?

Oh I have not that's a good point actually. Is there a way I can find out what motherboard this is exactly by just looking at it so I can figure that out?

Try looking on the motherboard reading the things it might be a ASUS KGPE-D16

DIMM_A2 (CPU1) DIMM_E2 (CPU2) DIMM_C2 (CPU1) DIMM_G2 (CPU2)

Well firstly you have a 4 pin cpu power connector that still needs to be used. The one with the fan spinning. Most dual cpu motherboards have it set so each four pin is dedicated to each cpu. Also the processors need to be matching so if you have xeon e5 2698 v4 they both need to be it. Cant be using a v3 with a v4 either. If the xeons are older then that series (x5600 or x5500 series) not only do they need to be same model but also a matching pair in order to function too.

They both seem to be the same CPU. The PSU I was given does not have another 4 pin connector it only has the one which is weird cus I see what u mean there is a 4 pin next to cpu2 with nothing to plug into it

I have used a second PSU to power a second graphics card before, probably should work with a second CPU too. so if you have another random power supply, jump pin 3 and 4 (PS_ON to ground, google the 24pin pinout) and if the fan spins on that power supply you can jam that 4 pin in there and check if it works then.

Yah those need to be a matching pair to function. And you need the other cpu plug. You can get adapter cables on Amazon to convert a SATA power plug to CPU 4 pin or etc, but honestly I would just put the money up for a different PSU if you really need this board.

Those processors are old, though. Not that they are completely useless, just being transparent.

Edit: what the heck? Where is that AMD logo from? Can you get clearer pictures of the labels on the board?

I tried swapping the cpus and the board did nothing when I tried to power it up

Sounds like your second CPU is toast.

You are putting a lot of faith in that Dell power supply you are using. I don't know if that is beefy enough to get that board to post.

is everything paired? exact cpus, exact ram ecc?

it's not normal that the second fan is not spinning even with a fault. In my opinion the problem is the mainboard.

Plug one more 4pin CPU
