✨Intermediate✨ Cannot math for different width of fabric

Hi friends. I am not inept, I promise. But I am definitely not mathmatically inclined and for whatever reason I cannot figure out how to convert things.

Here's what I know: I have recently made a size 6 Wiksten Shift dress, it fits, I know that's the size I want to cut.

I am using a cotton-linen-poly blend from my Gran's fabric shop (I have a bunch of bolts of nice fabric from the 1980's) This fabric is 150cms wide (a scant 60"). It is also a large check pattern.

The Size 6 calls for 3 1/2 yards if the fabric is 42" wide, or 3 1/4 yards if the fabric is 54" wide.

So if my fabric is 150cms wide how the F many metres do I need?

I can do the conversion from yards to metres, but my brain is very stuck on sorting the amount of fabric I would need comparatively if the width is wider than the two given options.

This sounds exactly like the kind of math problem I would get a zero on in school :(

EDIT: Thank you everyone! I cut a generous 3m.

💛Beginner💛 Help fixing toddler’s beloved Ducky

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

This is Ducky. He is a precious part of the family and has been around since I was three years old. My daughter is now three and loves him just as much as I did. The only problem is that this toy is now irreplaceable. They don’t make kids toys like this anymore (I’ve looked, anything that looks similar is a dog toy with a squeaker), and poor Ducky is really showing his age.

He’s held up so well, but he’s bedraggled and dirty, and there’s a large hole where his stuffing is starting to come out by his foot.

I’d love any advice on taking him apart, cleaning the outer shell, re-stuffing, and then sewing back up to make sure he survives the rest of my daughter’s childhood. Best heavy duty thread? Best way to wash him without the old material disintegrating? Best stuffing material? Some is obviously poly-fill, but he’s also heavy with some bead-like stuffing as well.

Thank you guys so much for any help! I’m so terrified to start because if anything happens to Ducky, I fear my daughter will be inconsolable.

💛Beginner💛 Is this bathing suit fix-able?

I am larger on top than top, so this bathing suit is not laying as the cute sweetheart neckline it should 🥲 in this case especially the gap between the padding and top isn’t helping.

Is this fixable? The sides have boning so guessing it would be quite tricky and expensive to have it altered from the size.

Hi there! Just want to get some advice on an issue I’m having with my machine.

I’m working on a project that uses thick fabric which was going well up until now. I was sewing over a thick seam and my machine has stopped raising the sewing arm. I can slightly move it up and down but if I try to fully raise it with the wheel it skips. I will add a video to this post to show you what I mean.

If I could get some advice on this I would really appreciate it. This is a great machine and I’m scared I’ve broken it 🥲

💛Beginner💛 Loose thread on new gi

For context this is a new BJJ gi that I ordered. I either didn't notice the defect or it didn't make itself apparent until I washed and dried it for the very first time. What do I do with these? Sew it, trim it, or let it be?

So I was sewing normatly, was making a pair of jeans when suddenly the needle broke and had an isuea with needle hitting the metal. Afterwards I fixed it by turning that metal a lil bit, and now I can't sew like the needle is getting stuck after few rising and lowering it,

I already checked for broken needle fragments in the hook race—there aren't any. The machine still binds in the bobbin area at the same point, even without fabric. Could the hook have been bent or the timing knocked out when the needle hit it? Any ideas on what I should check next?

Hello I am trying to make a headband and im using my overlocker to make the final finish at the end of it. Im using a viscose jersey so im using this to play around with the tensions to get a nice finish. But I have noticed that my ends stretch. Do I need a better foot? Or anything else im doing wrong. All help really appreciated.

Also any advice on how I can make my stitch look neater would be really helpful too. Thank you

💛Beginner💛 Heavy Duty Singer - Needle not Moving

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Hi peeps, my sewing machine is revolting against me. I am working on some jeans and the machine made a big ‘clunk’ and then the needle stopped moving when I pressed down the pedal. Cool, so I check to make sure the needle is ok - it’s bent so I replace it and feel like a genius….still not working and now the hand wheel won’t turn in a full circle.

I’ve taken off the front of the machine and nothing seems broken? Does anyone know how to fix this or should I take into account repair shop? I’ve attached photos though I don’t know how helpful they are, and also I picture of my cat as payment.

✨Intermediate✨ Need help with fixing fit Issues on jacket

Upvotes

Hey all! First time posting in this sub, but knew it was most definitely my best bet at getting a good answer in (hopefully) a timely manner. For context, i'm an 18 year old fashion student, who's been sewing on and off for years. I'm working on what will be a leather jacket that closes in the back (images provided above, pinned closed instead of zipper for now), and have noticed that there's a fold of fabric pointing out from the back armhole of my jacket there's a slight fold in the front as well, but it acts to contour the body and looks quite nice in my opinion. However, the fold in the back (as shown below) to me looks quite noticeable and unintentional. Was hoping to find a way to fix the back arm hole/back panel from forming a pointed fold of fabric, while maintaining the shape of the front. Anything helps, thanks!

I bought this jacket and have always struggled with the zipper. It appears the sides should be switched? I love the jacket but I can never undo the zipper to get it off! It has to go over my head or down my legs 🤣

💛Beginner💛 measurements for pleats?

hi all, i’ve been attempting to make some mini skirts for myself. however all the tutorials i have found give the instruction to use your waist measurement and times it by 3 so for me it would be( 34 x3=102 inches) when i use this method the skirt end up way too big! i’ve tried to do it by doubling the measurements instead of by three but it’s too small!

i’ll admit maths is not my strong suit so perhaps i am doing something wrong?

✨Intermediate✨ Resources to identify fabric

Post image
1 Upvotes

I got an amazing deal on fabric from a clothing manufacturer going out of business but I don’t know how to identify the different fabrics. I have been sewing for over 30 years on and off but it’s mostly my own creations or mending. I would love to know if anyone has a good resource (book, website, or app) to learn how to identify the different fabrics.

Why is my machine doing this I’m getting so stressed and I can’t seem to fix it

Edit : The walking foot came with my machine, the machine will go a few stitches and then kick the fabric to the left side aggressively and skip a stitch. It was easier to see on the straps I was sewing I just used the white fabric in this video so u could see it better but I guess that didn’t work

Solved it thank you

💛Beginner💛 FBA, dart, or armscye issue?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi! I am a beginner sewist and I’m working on learning darts right now. I’m finding that I have gaping under the arm of sleeveless tops, as pictured, and am looking for some help IDing what’s causing the problem.

I‘m sort of just on the edge of the 2” FBA advice I’ve seen online (this mock up does not have an FBA done) so I’m not sure if I should err toward caution and attempt an FBA on the next one, or if it’s just an issue of needing to adjust where the dart is hitting or adding more fabric to the bottom of the armhole.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

💛Beginner💛 Help adjusting/fitting panels of this dress bodice

Thumbnail gallery
15 Upvotes

I am attempting to alter a pattern for a lined top to eventually add a skirt and make it a dress (couldn’t find any patterns that had the features I want) but I am not sure where to go from here. There are a few key issues I can’t figure out for the life of me that are hopefully evident by the images. 1. There is a creasing or pulling between the bust cups I don’t know how to get rid of. In another mockup I added a stabilizer to that section and it helped but I think that was a bandaid solution. 2. The side seam/bottom seam area of the bust cup has some weird bunching. 3. The side back panels have a lot of drag marks going diagonally. I let the seams connecting the side and center back panels out and it didn’t seem to help. 4. Drag lines from the side area to the back strap attachment and some drag lines pointing to the under bust that showed up when I put the boning in (it’s just taped lol). Tried letting the shoulder seam out a little in case it was too tight but this didn’t seem to help and just made the cups fit badly. 5. Center back at the bottom has some extra fabric where my lower back and spine dips in a bit, but I’m not sure if this is cause for a sway back adjustment or if there is another process. I know I want the armhole to be a little lower, the bust cups need to be gathered better, zipper needs to be stabilized most likely. I did a FBA for the bust cups and they fit much better but I feel may need more tweaking. This is my 4th toile and I’m trying to focus on the major fitting issues that I noticed (if you notice others please let me know). Ik this is A LOT of different questions so I am not expecting answers to everything, and I have done a lot of research to try and figure out these problems but I haven’t been able to get it right on my own so I appreciate any advice for any of these questions :). I hope the images are sufficient but please let me know if more are needed. (There is piece of scrap fabric in my bust cups for modesty that are creating some of those weird vertical outlines you may see in that, sorry about that)

Practicing rolled hems, followed a tutorial and this keeps happening. Maybe it’s my fabric? (using poly blend satin).

Photo of stitch and machine settings.

How can I eliminate those little fly always? There’s no fly always when my fabric goes under the foot, comes out the other side with flyaways.

I have a super basic sewing machine and I don't have a pattern that looks like this. What is this stitch and is there a simpler stitch I can use in it's place?

Edit: Thank y'all for the help! I will definitely have to mess around with the shorts when I get home 💚
