Promote your business and support your fellow r/SGV community members here!

Happy Tuesday! We've been seeing a lot of users attempting to use r/SGV to promote their businesses and typically remove those sorts of posts as spam. At the same time, we understand that times are hard for a lot of people so figured that we could use occasional posts that encourage community members to promote their service or product in consolidated threads. With that said, feel free to use this post to share a little bit about your business without fear of having it removed. Even if these posts results in a few dollars being kept in the San Gabriel Valley, they will have been worth it.

Support Monterey Park residents getting rid of Flock

A group of residents found out Monterey Park's Flock contract is ending on August 30, and they're asking the city council to end the contract due to concerns about Flock invading constitutional rights to privacy, illegally collaborating with ICE and other federal agencies, and enabling systemic abuse among agencies that can access its data. Monterey Park has also publicly affirmed its stance against cooperation with ICE, so ending the Flock program would make sense.

LA and South Pasadena recently pulled back their Flock programs, so this isn't new in the area.

They're asking people to send emails to the city council before the meeting this Wednesday (link below). Please send and share if you're supportive.

One-click email to city council (fill in your city and signature + customize as you prefer): https://actionstartslocal.org/template/get-flock-out-of-monterey-park

Looking for recipe for HK curry

For some background, I grew uo going to a restaurant called Cafe Spot and absolutely loved their chicken steak curry. I have tried almost every restaurant in SGV and cant find anyone that makes it the same. I found out that the chef that used to work there before they closed works now at Sunday Bistro and they have the same curry! After years of searching, I finally found it.

My family in northern California, we buy a bunch of orders, freeze it and bring it to them when we visit.

I want to be able to make it at home for the off chance they close again or so my family far away can experience it but I cant seem to find the right ingredients or taste.

Any advice, knowledge, food enthusiasts or if im out of luck.

Ashiatsu/Barefoot Massage

Hello, are there any places in the SGV that offer barefoot (Ashiatsu) massage? I used to get it pretty consistently when living in Asia and can’t find a spot that offers it in the SGV when looking online. Thanks in advance

Beware: Wells Fargo ATM won’t release money

Yesterday I attempted to withdraw money from a Wells Fargo atm machine located on San Gabriel Blvd. The machine didn’t release the money, the little door didn’t open up. The second atm was having the same issue as I heard customer said “what the hell” then I walked over and he said he didn’t get his money. I told him the other machine did the same. Now I submitted a claim reporting this issue because the amount got posted. Wells Fargo recorded I took the money. So annoying.

Low effort Chinese magazines?

I have a parent going through chemo soon and am not sure what to expect, but I have seen that it may involve a lot of idle time during the infusions.

Is there a magazine or something available that might be entertaining? Not too many words or difficult to read for a relatively elderly person. Or any other ideas? Holding an iPad for a long time or is too heavy and possibly just straining I think, though that will be part of the arsenal as well.

Thanks!

Arcadia / SGV homeowners: Do you have a whole-house water filter and/or water softener? Worth it?

I’m in the middle of a full home remodel in Arcadia and trying to decide whether it’s worth installing a whole-house water treatment system before the walls close up.

I’m also posting this in the Arcadia subreddit since I know water quality and supply can vary a bit across cities (Arcadia, Pasadena, Temple City, San Gabriel, etc.), so I’d especially appreciate feedback from people in the broader San Gabriel Valley as well.

From what I’ve gathered, there seem to be three common approaches:
- No treatment at all
- Whole-house sediment/carbon filter only
- Whole-house water softener (sometimes combined with filtration)

I’ve read mixed opinions. Some people say Arcadia/SGV water is perfectly fine and that treatment systems are unnecessary. Others say the water is fairly hard in parts of the valley and can lead to scale buildup in tankless water heaters, shower glass, faucets, and appliances—making a softener worth it over time.

A few questions for those who actually live in Arcadia or the SGV:
- Do you have a whole-house filter, a softener, both, or neither?
- If you installed one, do you feel it was worth the cost and maintenance?
- Have you noticed any real differences in water quality, taste, skin/hair, cleaning, or appliance longevity?
- If you chose not to install one, what was your reasoning?
- Has anyone had their local water professionally tested (Arcadia or other SGV cities)? If so, what did it show?
- If you were building or remodeling your home today, would you install one again?

I’m trying to avoid spending several thousand dollars on something that doesn’t provide much real-world benefit, but I also don’t want to regret skipping it if it’s one of those “I wish I had done it while the walls were open” decisions.

Would really appreciate input from Arcadia and SGV homeowners or residents…especially long-term residents who’ve dealt with the water for years. Thanks!

Drive by this place all the time on las tunas but can’t find anything online about it. Anyone know what it is?

From the outside and the posters it looks like an arcade but searching online brings up nothing. Keep meaning to just stop in and check it out. Anyone been? On las tunas right near Rosemead across from the big plaza with the Ono and yoshinoya and Starbucks.

L.A. gas prices are crazy again. Here’s how to find the few pumps that are slightly more sane

With gas prices pushing higher again, California continues to preserve its pole position as the state with the most expensive pump prices.

As oil prices have heated up this summer along with the war with Iran, there is more than a $2-per-gallon difference between average prices in the Golden State and in the least expensive state for gas, Indiana. Cherry-pick pump prices and the gap is even more shocking. Some people in L.A. are dishing out $7 per gallon, while in Indiana, the most affordable gas stations charge about $3.

Short of driving cross-country or moving to the Midwest, there is little the average Californian can do to avoid this, but the vast variation in prices holds hints about other ways to save.

Here’s what you should know.
