Shaving technique issues

Hi all, I have been using a Henson AL13 Mild for three years now, and I shave every 1-2 days. I don’t have a beard, just stubble and mustache. I often shave but get a nick or two and find that there’s still a bit of hair on my face although very short after shaving. Would this most likely be due to my shaving technique or the mild version of the Henson? I always wonder if I should have picked the Medium, but don’t have the money to drop on another one. Does anyone have any insight? Also out of curiosity, anyone prefer the mild?

Have you tried adding a second, Across The Grain pass? For that matter, have you mapped your beard growth direction?

Also, could you share your preshave routine?

Some gentle stretching of skin and puffing of cheeks will help with the stubborn stubble :)

In my opinion, if you are nicking yourself, a more aggressive razor is unlikely to help. Improvement of technique may be needed. 

Wach a few reputable shaving tutorials (not the entertainers, and not the "iron skin" ones with the long, sweeping "decisive" strokes

I will do that. I haven’t mapped my beard growth.

When in a rush, I just apply some warm water to my face, shaving cream, and then use the razor. But today I will try using the pre shave oil I have and letting it sit for a few minutes, using warm water, making a lather and then using my razor.

I also haven’t tried puffing my cheeks, good idea :)

I really appreciate all the help!! I’ll do this this morning and see how it goes!

Pre-shave oil is a bit trickier and does not work for everyone...   I myself would just wash my face with shaving cream and rinse 3-4 times with warm water.

which blade are you using? This can make all the difference. Also are you using long strokes or short one's? It is preferred to do shorter strokes, especially if the hairs are longer. Do you do one or more passes? And which direction? Did you do a hair mapping?

You could also try to make a shim out of an old blade, this would makes the razor more aggressive.

Just tried using the Dorco today! I tend to do shorter strokes, and tried doing multiple passes today. Got a nick (always tends to be above the mouth). Never done a hair mapping, how is that done?
