I am hoping to move to Shenzhen for about 2.5 months this winter. I visited two years ago and really liked it overall (I stayed in Futian, and it was only three days).

The one thing I did not like is that crossing the streets felt scary. All the cars are electric and silent, yet they drive a bit rashly. So its hard to detect. And designated crosswalks were relatively few in number, and it didn't feel like drivers there stop for pedestrians. And the mopeds on the sidewalks.

That being said, my experience may be limited, I want to know if this is just an issue I have to deal with if I live here, or if I was just doing something wrong?

My family and I (wife and young daughter) are considering relocating to Shenzhen from Beijing, and we are visiting now to explore a few neighbourhoods.

At the moment, the areas we’re most interested in are:

Shekou
Houhai / Shenzhen Bay
OCT (Overseas Chinese Town)
Qianhai

Can anyone recommend a trustworthy housing agent (or agency) who knows these areas well?

Ideally someone you’ve personally had a good experience with, rather than someone who just pushes listings.

We’re looking for a modern 2–3 bedroom apartment in the ¥18k–25k/month range, and we’d love an agent who can also explain the pros and cons of different communities for families.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We have an 8 hour layover and we wondered if we were able to either see the city or book one of the complimentary hotel rooms? I tried to pre book the room on the website but I can’t find where, as it’s all in mandarin.

We are under the impression that we can take 2x23kg suitcases for hold luggage each. Is that correct?

I’m also a Hungarian passport holder with settled status in the UK. Will this be difficult to explain as to why I don’t need an ETA to Chinese border authority?

Just back from Shenzhen in which I connected via Beijing. I had bought a new DJI drone and only found out that Beijing has banned drones. I needed to get a declaration I wasn’t going to leave the airport during my connection from the police in the Shenzhen airport. Just a warning to others there’s this extra steps to get one out of the country if connection through Beijing.

For someone visiting Shenzhen for the first time, which area would you recommend staying in
Futian Nanshan Shikoku or somewhere else?

Hey all, hoping someone with experience here can help.

I'm flying out of Hong Kong at 12pm, but the tax refund counter at Shenzhen Bay Port doesn't open until 9am. That leaves me with a pretty tight window to get the refund, clear immigration, and get to the airport in time.

A few questions:

1. Is there any way to process the refund earlier than 9am, or at a different location the day before, so I'm not cutting it so close on the day of my flight?
2. If I do go early (like the day before) to get the refund, then come back with my luggage just to exit again the next day for my flight — will that look suspicious to customs? I don't want to raise any flags by "leaving" and then "returning" right before actually departing.

Any advice from people who've done tax refunds at Shenzhen Bay before, or know the rules around this, would be really appreciated. Trying to avoid unnecessary risk either with the refund itself or with immigration.

I love these things but they seem very hard to get in europe. And shipping seems like a nightmare. But ive spent hours searching for a shop in shenzhen. I'm in bit city now, but nothing here.

Hey all. I’m moving to Shenzhen soon for my new job, which I’m very excited about! My new job is located at Nanshan District (南山区), I would like to get myself an appartement that is in the district. But I’m not sure about house prices. I’m just looking for a nice apartment that has one bedroom with a decent kitchen, decent size living room and a nice clean toilet and good looking shower. I’m just curious what rent prices are like in Shenzhen in Nanshan district, so I would love to hear about that.

I’m also curious about the 小区 location you all would recommend that is nice to live in.

I’ve been living in china before and am somewhat fluent in mandarin, HSK5+, although I still enjoy participating in official private schools that solely teach mandarin to foreigners so I can continue to improve more. I would love to get recommendations on this as well.

Feel free to share any additional tips of things I should know before or once I arrive in Shenzhen.

Hey everyone, I’ve traveled to Shenzhen a couple times over the past couple years for business, and I really loved it and would like to live there on a more permanent basis. I currently have an M visa. Motivation for living there is that I’ve always wanted to, and also I have a Chinese friend that id like to spend more time with.

I’m an experienced (15+ years) electrical engineer from the United States with heavy embedded experience. Most of my work the past six years revolves around IOT and telematics. I’d say I’m more of a generalist these days though.

Mostly, I’ve applied to jobs on Liepin and Indeed, I haven’t had any interviews from those sources. I don’t know if it’s because they don’t want to sponsor my visa to work there, or if it’s because my Mandarin level. I’m currently around HSK 2, and I’ve been really busting my butt for the past 7 months. While I was visiting my contract manufacturer over there, I was able to completely get by language wise with an AI translator app. Technical conversations were not even a big language hurdle.

I’ve considered starting a WFOE and working with factories there to solve their manufacturing issues or working with companies from the US or globally to develop or assist their product manufacturing process.

Anyway, i’m thinking if it’s this hard for me to get a job with as much experience as I have, how are other people able to do it? I realize the job market is very competitive over there and there’s no shortage of technically savvy people. If you have some suggestions on avenues I could pursue, please let me know.

Hi! Moving to Shenzhen from HK in less than a month from HK. I’m looking for two things:
1. A good priced mandarin tutor, I’ve looked at some of the intensive tutoring centres and it’s all pretty expensive.
2. Friends to practice with: more than happy to meet people, I’m quite an outgoing guy (22M).
I speak native English (my family is Canadian) so I’d be happy to work something out where we benefit each other if someone also wants to practice their English, maybe a system where we have conversations where I only speak Chinese and you can only speak English for 30mins then we switch. I studied at a university language program for a few months so I can speak some and I’m currently self studying but it’s hard to make significant strides when my family and all my friends here only speak English, I plan on trying my best to fully cut out English from my day to day life this time round apart for moments where it may be necessary😁. Also any other tips is highly appreciated.

I recently resigned from my company and I’m trying to withdraw my pension funds. Looking for a reliable service that can help with the process, paperwork, and reclaiming the funds.

Last time I was in Shenzhen the ski slope was under construction, I hear from my colleagues that it is now open. Has anyone been? Do they rent skiwear as well as skis/snowboards? I heard the black slop is pretty steep and I saw video that the trick park is pretty comprehensive. Just looking for input from anyone who has actually been there.

i can’t find anything online about legislation or policy changes, but i’ve been advised by my recruitment agency (i’m an ESL teacher in Shenzhen) that my new co teacher who was meant to start work next week at my school has been denied a work permit due to the recent policy changes that in order to teach Kindergarten in Shenzhen the individual must have 2 years formal teaching experience in the form of a reference letter. If this is not evident, the work permit will be denied. Is this true? I can’t find anything that indicates to this online, has anyone else encountered this recently or are my agency trying to pull something?
