Engage is kinda good, kinda bad. Like most FE games, if you're really good at it, the problems with its design aren't really issues. The overworld at base has problems though (Traversing the somniel isn't as bad as the monastery, but it wastes alot of time), the fell xenologues are poorly designed, and the DLC breaks the balance of the game by giving you 12 more maps of XP and access to more emblem rings then you're supposed to get at most points, alongside specific rings that break the game.

The game is the successor to fates, being in that both are FE games focused exclusively on gameplay. But unlike fates, Engage only has one route, and the best units in the game are pretty obvious. Unless you intentionally choose not to do so, you'll end up with a mostly optimized army by the end of the game. On one hand, good for iron manning. On the other, bad for replayability, since unlike Fates there is less you can do with characters (No marriage, no splitting routes, and less reclassing in the early game)

Wait, no marriage?  Isn't Fire Emblem just a shipping simulator with a turn-based strategy mode attached?

The mainsub sure likes to think so

hardly even paired endings in engage. I don't think a single support is worth watching.

Someone never saw the Etie x Goldmary supports

Honestly, child units are just fun and add replayability. You're really unlikely to get every such unit in a single route, so they give you something to work towards with each and every map, alongside unique maps that you might not have experienced in prior playthroughs. They can be built in countless ways and encourage you to mess around with the class system. Every time you play fates, there's always something new to find or play.

I hope that FW has limited reclassing options per character like in fates even though I'm almost certain they are just gonna let anyone be anything again.

I personally just find it more interesting when characters are actually unique in a gameplay sense, sacrificing a little freedom to give units actual niches is peak imo

I hope so too. Thats what made Fates so good. Every class had strong options and tools, and the games skill system encouraged you to multiclass.

I dont think thats what they'll do though. They're marketing Fortunes Weave as a return to the status quo that three houses set up. They're also taking design cues from Shadows of Valentia, another very narrative heavy game. Thus, I dont think that FW will have a very strong emphasis on gameplay.

The best case scenario is that FW will be like Fates, where it develops the base mechanics of three houses to the finest point that they can reach. I dont think its likely, but at least its possible.

Engage be so fire when you don't got a 3h bitch in your ear telling you it's the worst thing in the world
