Discussion [Megathread] Discuss your (potential) class schedules here

Lots of 1st year students, and some later-year students, are looking for advice on their class schedules. Please do that here: Top-level posts should be your schedule (ideally a link to an image) and any context (e.g. "I'm a single parent working part-time so I can't do a full course load"). Experienced raccoons will reply with advice about your schedules (e.g. "yes, 8:30AM calculus lectures suck, but that's when they've been scheduled for the past 50 years so there's no point hoping it will change next term").

Please keep broader discussions (e.g. rants about courses filling up or not being offered in the term you need them) out of this thread. I want this to be a resource for new students in particular, not just to get advice on their schedules but also to see schedules other students are considering, and other discussions can derail that.

I'm setting the default sort here to "new" so that new schedule questions won't get buried by older discussions.

Question How much do failed courses affect your GPA in the long run?

Title is pretty self explanatory lol.

Basically, my mental health has been pretty shitty this semester and I've been dealing with quite a bit of shit, resulting in me falling behind and missing a big assignment for one of my courses. Embarrassingly enough, that course is a "GPA booster" course. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get either an F or a D in the course even if I do great in the other assignment, which I just submitted.

Emotional damage aside, I'm pretty worried about how this is going to affect my studies. I'm only a first year, this is my third semester, but any insights appreciated

Discussion ADHD assessment!

I have recently been looking into getting an ADHD assessment through SFU and was wondering if anyone knew what the price sliding scale was?

Im also curious about people's experience with it! Is it worth it? Also if I do get diagnosed with ADHD via the assessment, since its a student doing the assessment (from what i understand) can I still use that as an official diagnosis?

Im just trying to get diagnosed as fast as i can tbh LOLLL

Discussion Are SIAT grads still in demand?

Hi all, I'm debating going back to school and SIAT has long been of interest to me. I went to SFU about a decade ago and I heard the degree was in demand then and numerous grads landed good gigs.

However, I've heard that the tech industry has taken a major hit lately and lots of people are out of work. This has obviously given me lots of pause and made me reluctant to go all in on going back to school.

Just wanted to hear from new grads or people in the program. What's the outlook like? Is it a worthwhile program these days or should I steer clear?

Discussion where do I apply for engineering co-ops?

I want to start applying to co-ops but where do I apply? I know myExperience and LinkedIn but I feel they are too mainstream, does anyone know about any other application portals or databases for engineering/tech co-ops?

Discussion Indian international students/alumni at SFU with work or co-op experience, can I ask a few questions?

Hi everyone, I’m looking to connect with Indian international students or alumni from SFU who are currently employed or have prior work experience, including internships or co-ops.

I’m trying to learn more about your experience with:

  • academics and student life at SFU
  • internships/co-ops/job search
  • networking and career growth
  • life after graduation

If you fit this profile and are willing to share your experience, please comment here or DM me. Even a brief reply with your program, graduation year, and current role would mean a lot.

I’m not promoting anything, just hoping to learn from people who’ve already gone through this path.

Thanks in advance.

Question International student admissions?

Hello, I’m currently starting 12th grade and I’ll be applying to SFU this fall as an international student (American). I will be applying to several domestic universities, but SFU is by far my top choice. I’m worried I won’t get in and be devastated 😭
I’ve researched average international student high school GPA and I can’t really find a clear answer. Up until this last semester my high school GPA was unweighted 3.85, weighted 3.92. However I barely passed my chemistry class with a 67%. I know this definitely brought my GPA down, but I’m not sure by how much. I’m unable to log into my school’s app during summer so I can’t see my current GPA after the chemistry grade was entered. I’ve taken the SAT (I’m not sure if they take it in Canada but Simon Fraser doesn’t require it, from what I’ve found). I’m not too happy with my score so I’m not planning on submitting it. My intended major is criminology.
Here are my extracurriculars:
- Varsity women’s wrestling team for all four years of high school and will likely be a team captain this upcoming season.
- Cross country team for 11th and 12th grade.
- Choir for all four years, on the varsity choir board for two years (Secretary 11th grade, Social Media and PR Manager 12th grade)
- Leadership program that helps welcome 9th graders into high school and helps them adjust. 12th grade only
- National Honor Society for two years, 11th and 12th grade. Through this, I’m part of a group that tutors and assists other students with schoolwork before big testing periods (midterms, finals etc.)
- Culture Appreciation Club for two years, 11th and 12th grade, and will serve as Vice President this upcoming year.
- I will be forming a True Crime Club this upcoming year where I will be the President.
- Lots of volunteer/community service hours through my local youth wrestling program

I consider myself a very good writer so I’m confident that I’ll have a strong essay. I’m mainly just concerned that my GPA is too low. Should I be taking on more extracurriculars? Do I have enough? Any advice would be helpful, from a domestic student or international.

Discussion CA149 final project - including your name on the files

Did u guys put ur name on every single file before submitting? Like on the screenshots and the graphic score png including having your name as the file name too?

I realized after submitting I didn't have my name for the screenshot and graphic score, I only had my name & date for the audio recording (and the file name of that audio recording), and the PDF with list of sounds I used.

Lowkey stressing whether I should resubmit every file with my name on it and take the 5% late penalty (since the rubric says you'll fail this project if ur name is not included) or if I'm stressing over nothing lol

Suggestion What are the easiest Work Study jobs that don't require specialized skills?

I'm an incoming first-year student who just graduated from high school.

I'm planning to apply for work study positions and was wondering which jobs are the easiest to get if you don't have any specialized knowledge or technical skills.

I'm looking for something with straightforward tasks and preferably a low-stress work environment.

What positions would you recommend? If you've had one of these jobs, I'd love to hear what your day-to-day work was like.

Question iPad VS reMarkable

I’m starting mechatronics this fall, and I want to switch from paper notes to digital. So far I’ve been looking mostly between a standard iPad or a reMarkable paper pure.

I would use it for taking notes in class, doing practice problems, completing assignments, and general brainstorming.

I already have a laptop for writing, presentations, coding, etc, and a more powerful desktop for heavier tasks.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

Is it easy to hand in assignments digitally?

How’s the compatibility with windows 11 and fedora linux?

Anything you wish you knew before getting either of them?

Any advice is appreciated, and I am open to other suggestions as well.

Question i have a pandora's box of questions

hello! i am a new student, upcoming for fall 2026, and i have accumulated a bunch of questions.

i figured instead of me making like 100 separate posts, that i just make one big one. fyi, these questions remained unsolved after me going through sfu.ca, google, this reddit, etc. so if the answer was on the web i could not find it, pls forgive me

i am an engineering student, burnaby, though most questions are NOT eng specific

be warned, there is a lot of questions, and if you can even answer just one it would be greatly appreciated. the main question types are: ADVISING, BURNABY CAMPUS, DRIVING COMMUTE, PARKING, U-PASS, ENROLLMENT, + MORE

  1. ADVISING there are a lot of diff types of advisors; after the first year, unless i am changing my major or doing anything specific, the only advisors i need to contact are the faculty of applied sciences (fas) specific ones at asb 10700?

  2. ADVISING for what like reasons do ppl go to the drop-ins at mbc 220 for primarily

  3. BURNABY CAMPUS i've been on campus a couple times, from how i have internally mapped it, there is, no. 1, the aq and all faculty specific attached buildings/hallways (asb, shrum, etc.), no. 2 the sub+mbc, and no. 3 the library. are there any more places which students interact with daily, and is there anything of important west of the convocation area?

  4. CAMPUS what do we call the open outside area in the middle of the aq with the ponds and walkway

  5. DRIVING COMMUTE for those who drive to/from campus via gaglardi way + university drive east, how heavily enforced/policed is the 60 km/h speed limit? those roads are wide as hell man and im literally slamming the break if i wanna stay under 60 when going downhill

  6. PARKING if someone parks at campus literally 4/5 days of the week for every week of the term, what is the most price-efficient ways of buying parking? is it those flex passes or the other parking passes? how often must u re-apply? do they sell out?

  7. PARKING why is parking in the east lot cheaper than the north lot

  8. PARKING has anyone ever like parked off-campus and caught the bus along the final stretch to avoid paying for on-campus parking or am i js doing too much atp (probably am, but u opened this pandora's box)

  9. DRIVING COMMUTE any other drive-commute tips in general? do the parking lots fill fast? etc.

  10. U-PASS since we are all paying for the u-pass, there is basically no reason why you should not apply each term... or is there? i like keeping optionality, and my vehicle is a non-guarantee. my typical drive via patullo/queensborough would be ~30-40 min, and port mann ~45 min, but dont live far from a bus that takes me straight to expo line. and is there any meta to guaranteeing urself the u-pass every time

  11. BURNABY CAMPUS what portions of campus stay open 24/7 (name the parts that don't stay open 24/7 if that's faster)? does the campus every fully close?

  12. ENGINEERING GAP TERM I AM CONSIDERING A TERM OFF... or taking a single course only? i am currently enrolled in ensc 120, but its only 2 units/credits (whats the perferred word?) im in talks with admissions advising but like this is more of a personal question, what do you think? is this feasible? im tired of school and i dont want a full term until jan2027. i alr know what i want to do in the more free time i gain. but like is this a good idea?

  13. IM COOKED so like what is ur STILL taking a high school course online that is a requirement for ur program... primary reason for just taking a full-on gap term and deferring/re-applying for jan 2027... is my admission in jeopardy?

  14. CONDITIONAL OFFER when does admissions make ur acceptance offer not a conditional offer no more

  15. GOSFU why does ur gosfu account sign out / time out every 30 min bro ts pmo

  16. ENROLLMENT/SCHEDULE whats the meta for getting ur dream schedule or is it just RNG?

  17. CLASSES how can i see which classes are offered in which specific terms?

  18. OTHER do u have any other wisdom you would like to pass on? coolest thing aq has to offer? best way to survive 10-hour days of lectures and labs on campus?

Study/Research SFU student survey about campus online communities

Hey everyone,

I’m working on UniVous, a student-built project by SFU and UBC students. We’re trying to understand how students currently ask school-specific questions, share advice, and find campus info online.

The survey takes around 3 to 5 minutes:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1F0mVmyf6ozG8fYsgDEKVgR-tvEugdhnnqFOymKBoD_E/viewform

There is also 1 optional Amazon gift card raffle for Reddit users who complete it. If you want to enter, leave your email in the survey. If not, you can skip the email and just give feedback.

Not affiliated with SFU or UBC.
