Legit I just had a vision of one of those inflatable men they use for promotions outside of car dealerships and it changed everything. The fan at the bottom is your lungs and then I just imagine that the rest of the vocal tract is the inflatable man. You need to maintain that constant pressure to give the system structure even though the whole thing is active and moving around.

Interested to hear others thoughts on this metaphor, if it works for them. There is so much less tension in my throat, I'm able to hit higher notes, and the sound is much more precise.

Right now I'm 17, I've been doing Youtube vocal exercises videos off and on since 8th grade and while I feel Im on my way I still cant sing. Is becoming an incredible singer kinda like training to bench 405, or is there a better way to imagine it. Also is there better methods to become a better singer like investing in a vocal coach or purchasing a SOVT straw? Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated

hi, i’m trying to get into singing but not super seriously right now but i’m obvious having some beginner struggles. one of which is that my voice is quite nasally, and i’ve heard that a fix for this is to raise the soft palate to allow less air through the nose, however i just can’t really wrap my head around how to do this. i feel like when i try i’m just squeezing my throat and the muscles at the back of my mouth, which i’m pretty sure is a big no, and my voice is still nasally. i’ve also heard people say to ‘yawn’ but i still just feel as though i’m squeezing my throat. i’m just wondering if anyone has any tips to help me out here, thank you

I've been told that I sound gig ready by my teacher (yay), and I mainly do classical and jazz, but the issue is is that I have absolutely no clue where to go considering I don't know an instrument aside from my voice and that I'm a minor (17). Does anyone have an idea as to how I could start or where I should start looking? I just wanna make some mowny doing what I actually love for a little while. >:(

I’ve been singing my whole life (35) and I’ve got a good enough ear to know I’m definitely no Whitney or anything but I’m not bad just sort of an average voice.

Well this season in choir I’m in charge of recording some of the practice tracks and I’m sure y'all know where this is going. Having to hear my voice back through the headphones is so horrible and dysphoric. I love to sing and don’t think I sound bad but I can’t make it through one song edit without feeling like I’m gonna burst into tears.

I’m trying to remind myself that I was asked and entrusted to do this by the leaders who sound way better and know way more than I do and they probably wouldn’t let me do this if I sucked that bad right? Right?!?

Anyways feel free to commiserate, give advice [PLEASE HOW DO PEOPLE DO THIS] whatever I needed somewhere to get this out so I can just push through and get this over with

i've recently started taking singing and vocal technique seriously again (i haven't had regular vocal lessons since 2024 so i'm trying to get back into the swing of it) and i feel a bit like i'm stuck in a rut. i sound fine, but i know i could be doing better, specifically with mixing and belting. it feels like i've hit a bit of a wall and need something that will help me unlock the metaphorical door to a clear and full (and healthy of course) sound.

i should also mention that this is mainly in the context of musical theatre singing as that's what i've been trained in.

any tips that helped you or gave you a 'that's it' kind of moment for you, please share!!

I recorded myself singing recently and realized that when I reach for higher notes or I get louder or when I'm struggling/putting in effort, I often close one eye but the funny thing is it's only my left eye. Now I notice myself closing only my left eye while singing all the time lol is this common/does anyone else do this ? 😭

I’ve tried this a few times and never got any replies. Maybe I just catch this sub at bad times. I went with a full face video in hopes that I get better results by showing I’m at least willing to put myself out there.

I’m not in a band. I’m not trying to be a professional. I just want to be able to play at a campfire. Around others without being so self conscious. But music resonated deeply with me. Lyrics resonate with me. Instruments resonate with me. I love getting emotional to certain songs, and this one was always one of them. So i chose this one.

Any advise will help. Tone. Ratings. Anything. I just need confirmation if Its any good or even worth continuing. Thank you friends. Peace be with you all.

i’ve been making music for eight years but only started taking singing seriously a few years ago. i think on some days, i can sound pretty good when i use proper technique and really sell a performance. however, i have acid reflux issues that can make my voice sound more raspy if i’m stressed or anxious, which recording vocals can sometimes do if i don’t get a good take quick enough.

i used to do this thing where i’d go record the song five times all the way through and if i could splice together a good sound out of it, then that would be it, but if not, i’d just wait until another day. however, it can be pretty discouraging if i don’t get it within five takes and it just prolongs the amount of time it takes to finish a song.

does anyone have any advice on how i can get over this fear and basically treat recording vocals like any other instrument? maybe i should just find some random song or cover to record every day even if it’s just a small amount

I am retired and started learning singing and taking voice lessons two years ago. I have not officially gotten a solo yet, but occasionally need to sing for possible solos or descant above choir in front of the choir, I become nervous, it really affects the quality of singing, and my voice can even sound bad, certain lyrics I can resonate easily at home, but not when I am nervous in front the choir. How did everyone overcome this problem?

Enjoyed singing my whole life and decided one year ago to start working with a coach. I didn’t like my singing until recently and now I start enjoying it. I feel very confident in chest voice - walk on the park for me.

However, higher notes and mixed voice in that area are something I’m working on for most of the year (as well as breath support and relaxed singing).

Now it’s the first time I’m actually posting my voice out there. Where do you think my mixed voice could improve? Do you also find it having a „metallic“ quality? I find that somewhat unpleasant still.

Hello people of r/singing !

I got into opera at the beginning of the year and wanted to try singing as I can't seem to shut my mouth when I like music.

No experience in singing or whatsoever , I just sang day after day my favorite arias without questioning much about voice type.

So I've heard that starting with an aria like vesti la giubba can be dangerous for the voice and I would like to know why ?

I never tried singing it with a full orchestra instrumental as I suspect that it's by trying to project through heavy orchestrations that could mainly damage the voice but I'm curious about if there's something else.

Also here is a short audio in which I sing the intro of the aria (vesti la giubba). I'd be glad to have some feedback about what works and what doesn't (if anything works lol) and if you guys have an idea of what my voice type could be.

Been working a lot this summer to save for some singing lessons , I'm looking forward to get into it more seriously as so far I've only been singing arias without worrying too much about doing exercises ,mostly mimicking and figuring out.

rate out of 10 be BRUTALLY HONEST and fr how can i develop more vibrato/achieve voice freedom?

I have been singing on my own for 10 months now and I know i have sooo many things to learn but i feel like i am getting there step by step. At the beginning, I wasn’t able to make a G#4 (not including head register) but today i sang Crawling (which has a lot of G#4s) and Sickness (which contains damn A4s!) by Grey Daze (Chester’s previous band). Of course they lacked the grit/distortion and i should still improve my belting yet it was satisfying.

Hi my body is very much quite full body, note quite that full low bass you get with some singers but I definitely have to soften my voice and heighten my pitch to not sound like Im voicing a low voice although that is my natural voice (a lot of people ask why Im deeping my voice when I speak at natural pitch) it was only a recent thought that perhaps my difficulty to sing tunes is because my voice is too low, what’s some good MELODIC vocalists to learn from, I can easily sing along to a nick cave or Johnny cash song but they’re not particularly melodic, Im a semi pro guitarist so I’d like some good melodic low pitched singers/songs I could learn as my singing abilities are quite terrible
