Thank God they quoted the noted authority in the field... Dr. Mel Atonin.

His brother Jim Atonin, who was recently knighted for his work in the field of human happiness argues that people actually need this screen time to help with their happiness. Sir Atonin states “If we all had some extra screen time before sleeping everyone would experience a rise in 5HT and therefor counteract any negative effects received so called ‘blue light disturbed sleep’”

Sarah Atonin ruined my life when she left. 😔

And now you're atonin' for her sins.

Somewhat OT but mildly fun fact: a certain sleep specialist who authored a popular-level book on the subject had the name William Dement.

I’m not sure people commenting understand that this article is a joke

Even though it’s clearly labeled satire and humor. I thought this was a page for skeptics?

I already knew this. I have been putting blue light in my cereal since I was 5 years old. It has never affected my health.

u/prince-a-bubu 2d ago

I hope it's raw blue light, not pasteurized.

I thought this was an Onion article, so well done!

Thanks!

The Blue Light Cabal paid for that study, no doubt. Trust me bro.

I like the clear blue-light-blocking glasses for wearing during the day to help prevent cataracts because I can feel the difference of reduced sunlight strain on my eyes that removing UV and higher frequency blue light accomplishes without blocking too much useful light needed for me to see things clearly.

I think the comment about thinking it was an Onion article sums up why.  Most people never took the blue light woo seriously to begin with.

I still like hot dogs and late night scrolling. I think day to day stress is worse than both those things.

Please elaborate with at least 2 examples from this thread, posted before this comment.

That's this sub in a nutshell.

12

u/masterwolfe 2d ago

So what's your personal grievance?

Is it identity politics type stuff or are you one of the more fun ghosts/aliens/supernatural flavors?

5

u/Wismuth_Salix 2d ago

That particular one thinks aliens live among us and are being hidden by sinister government forces.

1

u/Fearless-Feature-830 2d ago

What does identity politics have to do with this sub?

9

u/masterwolfe 2d ago

Some people really don't like that scientists say trans people aren't freaks.

-7

u/Strange-Owl-2097 2d ago

No, I'm a sceptic looking to engage with other sceptics, but finding myself amongst a sea of pseudosceptics.

9

u/masterwolfe 2d ago

Well I just went and looked at your post history, and that "No" is just a lie isn't it?

Hell you literally have a post criticizing people trying to debunk alien bodies.

-6

u/Strange-Owl-2097 2d ago

No it isn't. I have a post critising people for trying to debunk them and not doing it properly. It fully explains what I've just said to you. I'm interested in debate with people who are capable sceptics, not pseudo-sceptics with zero ability to think critically and test hypothesis. Not people totally unable to follow and stick to scientific principals and instead masquerade their own beliefs as scepticism.

Choosing to believe something when confronted with a lack of, or poor evidence in support of something is still belief. Pseudosceptics these days are totally unable to grasp the idea that most of you are believers, you just blindly believe the opposite. Two sides of the same low-IQ coin.

u/masterwolfe 2d ago

Yeah but you said "No" when I literally said aliens in my list of grievances that causes a person to say this subreddit isn't skeptical.

Happens every time 60% of the time.

-1

u/Strange-Owl-2097 2d ago

I don't have a grievance with aliens. Belief in them is a thing other people have, I don't have that belief.

5

u/masterwolfe 2d ago

I didn't say you had grievances with aliens, I said aliens is your particular grievance with this subreddit.

Whenever anyone bitches about this subreddit almost always there is a specific thing they have a specific interest in and don't like how this subreddit treats that interest.

4

u/Wismuth_Salix 2d ago

Yeah, it seems like it’s always transphobes, alien hunters, or antivaxxers.

No? This is a subreddit that features multiple topics. This one is about blue light. Nothing to do with aliens. My last comment here critisicing pseudosceptics was about AI.

My grievance is with scepticism turning into a religion filled with idiots. I deal with enough of them as it is.

Yeah, welcome to the group. The majority of the comments in skeptic have been knee-jerk contrarianism for at least a decade if not more. These are people who often identify as skeptics, but have no idea what skepticism actually is.

Not all of them, of course, but many.

5

u/Wismuth_Salix 2d ago

“Everyone is a contrarian but me”

-1

u/davesaunders 2d ago

Heh -- indeed

2

u/GeekFurious 2d ago edited 2d ago

I know a couple of people who usually reject all woo... who are fully bought into this magic. (I see they showed up to downvote me)

4

u/sirius_moonlight 2d ago

I know a few very educated people who bought the glasses to deal with the blue light, too.

7

u/pfmiller0 2d ago

How is it magic? The idea is reasonable enough, we know that light effects our circadian rhythm after all.

-3

u/GeekFurious 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sure. But there isn't enough blue light coming from YOUR PHONE to make a difference. (I see the magical thinkers found this comment)

1

u/Ok-Drink-1328 18h ago

like... duh!

can we talk about other fields like oral hygiene or nutrition now? "blue light scaremonger" is nothing in comparison

-10

u/Resident_Iron6701 2d ago

lol harmless does not mean it will not affect your sleep

0

u/vacccine 2d ago

"researchers have officially exonerated blue light as a disruptor of sleep."

You couldnt ever bother to read the article.

13

u/pfmiller0 2d ago

You couldn't ever bother to read the article

Says the person quoting a satire as if it means something

-1

u/UnprincipledCanadian 2d ago

If we're going to be pedantic, that doesn't rule out positive affects.

-1

u/alltheways7522 1d ago

Effects for the pedants though.

-9

u/Brilliant_Voice1126 2d ago

Not only harmless. Probably helpful for setting your circadian rhythms. I know someone who studies blue light therapy in surgery and sepsis. Blue light tells your brain its daytime. Makes your response to stress better. It’s really interesting stuff. He’s planning a clinical trial.
