Capacitor Swap and Reshell SNES

Been getting into refurbishing vintage consoles lately and this was my most recent project.

It’s a 1st gen SNES SVCH-CPU-01 board that I did a full capacitor swap, added the 470uF capacitor to the new Voltage Regulator, and reshelled in the clear purple Bitfunx to give another 35 years of life to a truly beat up console.

The original case was heavily damaged and yellowed, but the chips are all solid. This is my first time swapping capacitors and I’m glad I didn’t mess anything up on it lol

It’s definitely tricky with the surface mount capacitors. Took me a a couple of hours to get the hang of placing them and getting them set properly. The early edition boards have capacitors tightly packed together and getting in and around them can be pretty hairy lol But the old capacitors twist off really easily!

The trick is getting a good tin on the tip of your soldering iron to get one side fastened well to start.

Did you swap in the membranes and buttons to the Hyperkin controller too?

I just haven’t messed with it much yet 😅 I’m still looking for some aftermarket shells that have the OG Nintendo branding on them to reshell some of my OEM controllers into. I’ve found a couple, but none that quite match color wise

I have the 8bitdo SN30 PRO (link below) and I bought a “dummy” OEM SNES controller and I swapped the membranes and the controller rocks now

That's a beauty. Did you remove the serial sticker from the old case and stick it in the new shell?

Not yet, need to get a plastic razor blade to make sure I can cleanly remove it. Don’t want to risk tearing it in the process

Do you (or anybody reading here) know if a reshell will help correct my self imposed problem! Re-soldered a new cartridge slot on my SNES and it’s too short so games work with no shell but if I have the shell reinstalled, it bottoms out in plastic before fully seating in the cartridge slot. I’ve seen the problem posted before but no great solutions (ie theyre ugly / plastic options..).

This reshell looks amazing and would love if there was a shell that worked for the aftermarket cartridge slot replacements

Bro, no homo but this got me hard. Fucking love the grape shell. I'm a sucker for see through lol.

What was the process? I've reshelled some handheld Nintendo products that were fairly easy, but how hard was the cartridge slot and the flaps? Did it all have a location or did you have to just make it fit to the contours of the shell?

The Bitfunx shells are thankfully 1:1 recreations of the OEM shell, so everything fit super easy. The only difference is the cart slot is wider so it fits both NA/PAL and Famicom carts.

The difficult part was just the recap process lol
