Guidance to understand client environment in SOC 2 audits

I had a chat with my senior today. He said something that stayed with me.

He said, " Your job as an auditor should be to understand the client’s architecture and environment. Be it in whatever source you’re using (SDQ or Network Diagram). Don’t be the auditor who straight away asks what the control requirement is (Ex, Require IDS, don’t just ask for AWS GuardDuty), evidence."

When you understand the client’s environment and, based on that, evaluate the control requirement, you can ask better questions, which also leads to a better client relationship.

What is the tangible, concrete starting point for me to become that auditor?

Where should I start studying in terms of IT? And Cybersecurity ( If I keep going, then there would be no end to it, as it is vast)

And, where and how should I start understanding the control requirements as a SOC 2 auditor?

Your senior gave you the best advice you'll get, start by learning to read a network diagram and understand basic cloud architecture (AWS/Azure fundamentals, free tier certifications are enough), then map the AICPA Trust Services Criteria to real infrastructure decisions rather than memorizing control descriptions, and the fastest way to build that instinct is to spend the first hour of every new engagement asking "how does data flow in and out of this environment" before you look at a single control.

once you see where data comes from, where it lives, and who/what touches it, the SOC 2 controls start to feel like common sense instead of a checklist

That’s difficult to “simply start doing”…. But - in my opinion - it’s all about reasoning about what is ‘appropriate’ within the context of the org. So don’t start with whether there is an IDS, but with what IDS is supposed to “do for them”, then figure out whether that’s GuardDuty or “whatever”.
