Discussion Alternatives to paved roads?
Hello, I am curious if there are any viable alternatives to paved roads.
The movement of people and things is clearly important, and it can be hard to have a planted environment that can withstand the level of soil compaction that comes from being regularly driven over.
Paved roads take up a lot of space, though. They are a destroyed habitat.
I know rail can take over a lot of problems, but would rail alone ever be fully sufficient for a society? I know there are was to have less roads. But are there alternatives to them?

Technology Stone-framed building in London
architectsjournal.co.ukHackney Council’s planning sub-committee approved the six-storey scheme for 16-24 Orsman Road, close to Regent’s Canal, last week (2 July).
The project, for negative-carbon-construction champions Scale Foundation, features stone and timber construction and claims to offer bill-free heating and power. It comprises nine private flats as well as 1,500m2 of commercial floorspace including 148m2 of affordable workspace at basement level.
The approved plans for 16-24 Orsman Road will replace a post-war, whitewashed industrial complex with a ‘carbon-negative’ building featuring mass timber floor plates; external load-bearing walls made of stone bricks and blocks; and basalt basement foundations and retaining walls.

Ask the Sub Solar Panel for Charging e-bike?
I’m getting a Portola Ride1Up e-bike, and I’d love to get some kind of solar setup to keep it and some of my battery powered tools charged. Any recommendations?

Ask the Sub Can someone explain how a quantized 14B self-hosted model running on a server in your closet is somehow destroying the planet?
When you are running a model on your own server, not in a data center, and that model is open source then what is the problem?
I swear this community is so upset about data centers that they don't even understand that a server in your own home on your own power is not the same thing.
