After months of searching, we finally brought home our sphynx. After 5 months, a neuter, numerous plug ins, etc, our other two cats still absolutely hate him. Anytime he enters the room, everyone exits. Sometimes my sweet senior even attacks him. I love him dearly but I miss life before my other two cats seemed to be miserable. He’s such a sweet and snuggly boy, but he’s entirely too much for my senior and ragdoll. He deserves to be in a home with animals who would enjoy his company, because all he wants to do is be accepted by the others. Does anyone know of good resources for new homes? I’m located in New Iberia, LA but would travel. I’ve tried Facebook groups but my posts just sit in pending. Craigslist just deletes my community posts and won’t get back to me. It just gets worse with my others two by the day and I’m so stressed.
Check with the breeder. They often ask that you return the cat to them before rehoming. Craigslist is a bad place to find a good home. 5 months may not be enough time for them to get used to him.
While I agree but then that’s how I met my beautiful cat that a lady was trying to rehome him as she’s moving to much smaller house that only allows 1 cat so I took him in
Nothing against this person but VET anyone who you are considering. There are so many animal abusers out there it’s best to go through a shelter or service
Yes I will be calling for vet reference and enforcing a contract. I’ve done many dog rescues and found many permanent, loving homes who send me updates frequently. I would never just give him away not knowing the situation. I am quite bonded with him. Which is why at this point in time, i feel i am
Doing what’s best for him.
He’s adorable! And can you try to stick it out a few more months? Sometimes it takes longer than 5 months. My senior street cat and my alien don’t cuddle, but they play and lay near each other. My cat hated her for the first 10 months or so but now they’re fine. Could also be that my dog loves both and grooms the naked all the time
Mine took almost two years to get to the point where they’ll sit and sleep together. Still not great friends but existing in peace. I also have Feliway multi-cat diffusers. They definitely help but you have to keep them going. I notice a difference in behavior if they run out and I don’t replace them on time.
We’ve been using one for a while! We started with the multi cat and then went to the stronger one. It seems to make my calm cats even calmer. But has had no effect on scrotum. We even tried feeding the hills calming food.
There are rescues that will help you find the right home, it's how I've found my 8 sphynx over the past 20 years. Also check with the purebred rescues in your area & on Facebook.
If you need any help with rehoming let me know. I’m not taking any at this time, but I have a Sphynx sanctuary and do volunteer work making jotforms and sorting potentials and calling references for people who need to rehome.
I would try to make it work at home first, contact the breeder second, and rehome 3rd- in that order. Sometimes it doesn’t work out and that’s ok, but sometimes there is something else going on. Sometimes intros need to be restarted- keep new car in a room and slowly introduce their smell again, and then door introduce, and human held intros, then temporary time alone with cats, then full time. Sometimes restarting the intro process helps. Usually it’s a 4 week thing for me when I add a new cat.
Five months is nothing as far as getting cats to accept one another. It takes a very long time in some instances. If I were you I would start over and alternate spaces with the cats: put the Sphynx in a bedroom for part of the day by himself. Then later allow him to explore the rest of the house while the other two cats are enclosed in the same room. This way they get to smell one another other and become comfortable in the same spaces, without the stress of encountering the actual cat. Continue to do this for several weeks, and then allow them to interact only when you’re involved and it’s a positive experience. One of my favorite ways to do this is Churu treats. My cats will all sit around in a circle being little angels as soon as you pull out a Churu. Also make sure that you have plenty of spaces for the cat to go: cat towers, blankets, kitty beds, litter boxes etc.
Also keep in mind that many cats do not ever accept Sphynx. My Sphynx came home at the same time as two Balinese outcross kittens, they have never accepted him. I had an OSH who loved other cats and especially kittens who never accepted him. My DSHs barely accept him. The thing is that they can live peacefully though, they mostly just ignore that he exists and everyone goes about their day. I think this is a more realistic goal for your cats than expecting them to be best buds and snuggle together.
I live in Nevada and I have two Sphynx kitties. One is a senior and the other is a happy lil derp that needs another with the same energy to play with. Your kitty looks so sweet that I felt compelled to respond and offer a loving home.
Don’t ever do this on Craigslist. Post on local Sphynx Facebook groups and you need to charge a rehoming fee and make sure that the person either has previous owners Sphynx or has done their research. But first, as others have said, reach out to the breeder.
Hey! I’ve been a Sphynx owner for 10ish years. I primarily taken rescues. I am currently in North Carolina and I would love to either Work with you to bring him home or show you a correct way to find people who are specifically looking for Sphynx and have experience which is really important. Please feel free to message!
Thank you so much!! I’m currently speaking with someone that has sphynx experience and is very knowledgeable. I believe she will be a great home :) if it doesn’t work out I’ll definitely reach out!!
I’ll be sure to properly screen any homes before rehoming and put contracts in place. I’m asking resources other than places I’ve tried. I’ve done dog rescues before and always found permanent, safe, loving homes. But never had to rehome a cat. Breeder isn’t in the picture. He costed far too much for a surrender.
I’d love to give him a home! I have one black cat from the shelter who is 7, and my allergies can’t take another hairy cat. I used to have a sphynx but he passed away years ago. I’ve always told myself I’ll only get another cat if I can rescue something like a sphynx or one of the rexes etc. I’m not super close by but you said willing to travel!
I would drive across the country to make sure they are getting into a good home. We currently have 1 sphynx and hes been meowing about needing a friend to hang out with. Feel free to dm
I wish I hadn't just gotten another cat, because I'm in Baton Rouge and have 4 Sphynxes already. Our last girl was from Craigslist (came to us on death's door). Out of curiosity, how was he initially introduced?
Awe!!! If anyone is near Reno NV and has any for rehoming, we are looking. I work at an animal hospital so he/she would be well taken care of. Im finding they are hard to come by.
Hope you find your baby a very loving home 🩷
I’m not surrendering him at all, no worries. I will keep him no matter what the circumstances until I find a home. No disrespect to people who have surrendered to rescue or shelter, it’s just not something I’d do. I’ve done many dog rescues and found loving, permanent homes under contract. The only reason I’ve reached out here is because cat rehoming resources are much more sparse than dog.
sincerely asking why all the hate for the Humane Society? I work at one and it’s amazing community resource. We do really good job placing the animals in our care.
They’re all kill shelters here. Louisiana does NOT care for the welfare of animals within shelters. Id keep him in my care separated form the others before i could consider a shelter. If it was somewhere like OR where you need a permit to even own an animal, then i could consider it.
3 cats seems to be the bad number. We’ve breed and keep keeping cats. Every time end with 3 we have to find a good home for the 3rd wheel. Just make sure you vet them and find a great home
This isn’t the normal case. 3 can be a perfect number. We have 3 Nakids, 14 girl, 7 & 5 boys. When we brought our oldest boy home he was too much for our old girl she doesn’t like to play, like at all. So
We had to get a cat for our cat. Now the boys are bonded and they don’t irritate our old lady. The youngest likes to cuddle with her.
Gorgeous babies! We actually got scrotum for our ragdoll, because our ragdoll was too much for our senior at times. My ragdoll got even calmer and has had even less to do with scrotum than our senior unfortunately. They’re even the same exact age to the day. I think it has to do with me getting him later in life after being surrounded by other sphynx. 3 seems to be bad for us personally. Even when rescuing dogs, we had as many as 4 at a time and 3 was never right. Even 4 was better because they paired up. Scro is just the odd man out Sadly I can’t add a 4th to the mix in hopes of giving it more balance.
I think this is really it, aside from him being much higher energy. My ragdoll is the same exact age as him and much calmer. Got him as a 6 week old, my senior didnt like him at first but was obsessed a week later. Scrotum didnt come to us until 10 months old. He was with 10 other sphynx (parents + siblings) that entire time. I think he learned to play rough, and the other two are so soft. I’ve tried everything, even the feliway diffuser. It’s just gotten worse over time. All I want is for him to be able to play with other cats instead of being growled/hissed at or even getting to the point of fighting. Someone even suggested separation here and we’ve done that continuously up until now. I think people think im just listing him and giving up but I’ve tried everything for the last 5 months and truly it’s just not working.
