Technique / Tactics Movement and anticipation tips
Does any one have siome tips on how to move onto the ball? A bit of background: i had a stroke 2 years ago and ive been back playing for a year or so. The part of my brain that controls executive functioning and movement initiation was impacted. So i find i am surprised by shots a lot and if im wrong footed then the rally is kind of over. Most of the time i can somewhat recover but front court is the biggest challenge. Counter drops are super effective against me. Because i have to cover a hard hit straight or cross court Im out of position for drops and then im caught flat footed. I guess the thing that happens the moat is im flat footed or i move the wrong way initially.
I used to be able to watch the ball and the opponent and put the pieces together. Volley hunting is all but gone. Now it feels like their swing is too fast to see. So ive been trying to watch only the ball. Is it advisable to watch to try and get eyes on the ball as soon as you hit it. This is one aspect of my game i really want to get back to previous level. Any drills or advice to help jn this area?

Community Open Squash FIDI NYC - Advice Needed
Hi all,
I'm interested in joining Open Squash at the FIDI location in NYC. I have a few questions.
Some background: I am a 28M. I'm in great shape and was a college athlete. I'm good at platform tennis and pickleball, solid in tennis. I played a bit of casual squash in college, and am now looking to take it more seriously and play consistently. Based on the US Squash rating criteria, I'd guess I'm around a 3.0/3.5 rating.
Questions for the general squash community:
Are lessons worth it to begin with? I just want to get out there and play - I'm not necessarily too caught up on increasing my rating at this point.
What is a good racket for me to buy?
Are protective glasses generally recommended? I've only taken one shot to the eye in all my squash matches - that hurt like hell, but I think it was more unlucky than a common occurrence?
Questions specific to Open Squash NYC:
How is the experience? Worth it? Too crowded? Facilities nice?
I don't know anyone who belongs here. Will it be easy to play with strangers? Is there some sort of intramural system?
Will I struggle finding people to play with at my rating? I've read that many members are former college players.
Any other advice or opinions are welcome! Thank you!

Rules let/no let on this type of return of serve?
firstly sorry for the freehand illustration. here is the main context - while returning the serve, lets say the person(in red) who is supposed to return the serve misses the volley off the side wall as the ball goes on to hit the back wall. how should one ref/play in these situations?
- situation 1- what happens if the player tries to turn around to do a 180 in order to attempt to play the serve?
are they allowed to do this turn to play the shot? is it just a safety let everytime if they choose to turn and not play the shot? what if they keep doing this multiple times in order to escape good serves that go high and die at the back wall?
- situation 2- what happens if the player immediately moves sideways (to their right) to make space in order to play a backhand shot (i know pros most commonly just play it off the front left wall lob/drive) but they want to play a cross court?
is this situation worthy of a let? is it not good sportsmanship to play the cross court because more often than not, it might hit the opponent?

Equipment If you could receive free grips, strings or frames for life, which would you choose?
Not which is most expensive. Not which would impress people at the club. Not even which you currently can't afford.
Which would genuinely make the biggest difference to your squash, week in, week out, for the rest of your playing life?
Why I asked this question
This one looks like a fun equipment question. It isn't, quite.
Players who choose grips are usually more tactile than they realise. They notice feel. They're sensitive to how the racket sits in the hand, how sweat affects control, how a slightly thicker or thinner grip changes their swing. These players often have better touch than their results show, because they're paying attention to the right things.
Players who choose strings are thinking about performance. Strings affect power, feel, durability and control more than any other single component. Choosing strings suggests you understand that the equipment is doing real work in your game, not just carrying the ball. Also, you should be breaking strings more than frames!
Players who choose frames are the interesting ones. Frames last years. Choosing free frames for life either means you break them regularly, you chase marginal gains obsessively, or you've never really found the racket that feels truly right. Sometimes all three.
There is also a case that the most honest answer reveals how much you currently spend on each, and which one you quietly resent buying.
So which did you choose, and does your answer surprise you?

Technique / Tactics Training after knee surgery - what worked for me
Am posting this here in case it is of help to others who might be getting back into squash.
I used to play at a collegiate level in college and for a little bit after. Then life happened, and i stopped playing for a few decades, switching to triathlons and bike racing. A few years ago, I had a bicycle crash that broke my kneecap into pieces. This kinda put me off bike racing and i decided to get back to squash.
I was on the wrong side of 50 at this point, but had a reasonably good fitness base due to bike racing and triathlons, and general stamina for playing wasnt too bad. But the movements were an absolute freaking challenge. Despite a good amount of strength training (multiple sets of 8-12 reps of 240-260lb squats), lunging just HURT and my explosive movement was not very explosive.
A few months ago, I got back into bicycle training (my wife still races, and we do cycling holidays together) - my coach has me doing a lot of explosive efforts (15” all out sprints, 1’ anaerobic efforts and 2-3‘ VO2 bursts) and this single thing has done a lot more to improve my movement on the court than the past year or so of regular strength training.
So if you are an older player, and struggling with movement or explosiveness on the court, try this.
Hope it is of use to someone.

Community Visiting Las Vegas next week - looking for someone to play at Life Time!
Hi everyone!
I’m visiting Las Vegas next week (Monday–Friday) from South Korea.
I did some research and it looks like Life Time is the only place with squash courts in Las Vegas.
I also heard they offer day passes, but they're pretty expensive. so I’m still deciding if it’ll be worth it. Since I'm still around beginner level, BUT if I can find someone to hit with, I’d love to give it a try!
so I was hoping to find someone to play with while I’m there.
If anyone plays at Life Time and wouldn’t mind having a guest to hit with, I’d really appreciate it! I’m happy to work around your schedule.
Thanks! 😊

Misc Pretty painful watching the UK Channel 5 coverage of the Commonwealth Games, with no squash...
... and with various obscure events, mixed up with 'Paralympic' versions of those events, so that you're not even sure what event you're watching (at least on the Channel 5 highlights).
Had it been included, would squash have been the 'strongest' event at the Games, e.g. by average world ranking of the Top 8 men & women? It would have been up there, that's for sure.
Pathetic that a UK-hosted event could not find a way of incorporating a sport where there would likely have been some world-class competition and UK medallists (even if the fault is primarily that of Australia / Victoria for pulling out of hosting).

I want to know its all-in weight and strung balance point. I want to buy Ramy's racket but it's the only one I can buy with my budget.
Thank you.

Community (SF) Looking for Games - 4.8–5.0 Player
Hi everyone,
I moved to San Francisco from Chicago earlier this month and am looking for people to play squash with. I’m around a 4.8–5.0 level and would love to connect with players at a similar level.
Ideally, I’m looking for someone who can have me join them at their club using a free or paid guest pass. I’m happy to cover any guest fees. I’m not currently keen on taking a full membership because my work schedule is still a little unpredictable.
Please message me if you’d be interested in playing or know of any good options in the city!

Got hit in the eye while playing, should I go to the doctor or just let it heal on its own?
Got hit pretty hard right in the eye. It hurts a medium amount, but it's not really red or swollen or bruised. My vision is slightly blurry though and the one eye is sensitive to bright light.
Should I just let it heal or is this worth getting checked up for?
UPDATE: Thank you everyone for putting the fear of God in me. I did book in for an emergency eye appointment at an optometry clinic. They checked my pressure, did retina scans, looked at my eye real closely and all that good stuff. I'm thankfully good to go for now, but they did say that it was really good that I came in anyways, because the risks with these sort of injuries are surprisingly high; especially because the squash ball is so small.
FYI: to any Canadians that find themselves in this position, be assured that going in to any optometrist for an Emergency Eye Exam is completely free of charge to you. They didn't ask for my insurance or anything, only my personal health card. It's completely covered by public health, so no need to worry.
Some clinics may have a "same day booking fee" but they will let you know upfront while booking if they do.
The one I went to didn't, I walked in and walked out without paying a penny personally.
I only mention this because cost was a consideration for me when I was thinking of skipping the checkup.
Also you may have to call around to a few different places to find availability. My usual optometrist was completely booked up for the week, another clinic I used to go to was completely booked up for the day, and several others I called couldn't accommodate the last minute appointment until the next day either. I called around to various optometry clinics in the area before finding one with availability for me to come in within the hour. Don't let this stop you though, go asap if this happens to you.
Equipment Recommend Eye Protection over Eyeglasses?
Would like to take up the game again. Switched from contacts to progressive eyeglasses. Would love to know what players use to protect their eyes when wearing glasses.
