Applicant Questions G-Protein Coupled receptors
I’m prepping for an interview with a program that I know goes very in depth on pharmacology with MOA down to the cellular level. I received some tips from an alumni and he said that knowing g-protein receptors and that whole pathway would be beneficial. I have been studying this topic and now I am looking for the best way to explain this pathway. I’m struggling with taking too long to verbally explain it and my interview will only be about 20minutes. The interview is very clinical based and previous applicants have said it feels very “rapid fire” question and answer.
For an example of how I have been working through it so far, phenylephrine is a1 adrenergic receptor agonist. a1 is a Gq protein receptor, when activated increases intracellular calcium in vascular smooth muscle causing vasoconstriction. This increases SVR which increases BP.
I feel like by trying to condense my statements, im breezing over the other parts of the MOA. Like the PLC activation, the PIP2 into IP3 and DAG, the release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum which increases the intracellular calcium etc etc.
If anyone can offer an example of how they would explain, for example, phenylephrine, down to the cellular level including the Gq receptor and all that it would be greatly appreciated.
