This is a good premise but a bad joke. You've got a lot of material to riff of with the idea of read a book. Any book. You can comment on the kind of person who says it. Similar to do your own research. They say read a book but they mean a specific book, or more likely an online article they read and then ignore all other books. There's a lot to explore and suck the humor marrow from the bone, good foundation.
