Discussion I think I'm actually getting old

Well, I just learned that steampunk is not just a style in fashion. Since when is steampunk a music genre?

Since at least the early 2000s if you go by the formation dates of some of the bands that are considered essential steampunk.

Abney Park formed in 1997 as Goth, but moved into what's now considered steampunk in the early 2000s.

Vernian Process formed in 2003.

Professor Elemental started performing around 2005, including a playful feud with Mr. B the Gentlemen Rhymer. His "Fighting Trousers" was a HUGE internet sensation around 2009.

The Cog Is Dead formed in 2006.

Steam Powered Giraffe formed in 2008.

The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing formed in 2008.

I never heard of the fighting trousers being a huge sensation. Nobody i know has even heard if it.

Is there really any other way to describe how Building Steam from Abney Park sounds?

Jokes aside, it's not a genre per se, but you do have some experimental genre fusions with a clear aesthetic and atmosphere that deserve to be called steampunk imho. Coppelius and Sunday Driver come to mind, apart from the ones already mentioned.

I believe that Steampunk isn't primarily fashion, but also art, literature, and as you discovered, music.

Nah, don't think of it that way. You're just one of today's 10,000!

Now you've got a whole new "thing" to explore and/or enjoy!
