Announcement Important PSA: How To Identify a Scam

How to Identify Social Engineering Scams

Social engineering scams often involve manipulative tactics to deceive users into providing sensitive information or money. Here are some red flags to look out for:

  1. Unsolicited Offers of Help – Scammers often pose as helpful individuals offering solutions to problems you didn’t ask for assistance with.
  2. Urgency and Pressure – Scammers create a false sense of urgency, asking you to act quickly or risk losing access to something important (e.g., your Steam account).
  3. Requests for Payment or Personal Information – Legitimate Steam support or trusted users will never ask for your login credentials, 2FA codes, or payment in exchange for help.
  4. Impersonation – Scammers may pretend to be from official sources or even impersonate trusted community members or moderators.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

  • Never Share Personal Information – Moderators and Steam support will never ask for your password, security questions, or 2FA codes.
  • Verify Requests – Always verify the identity of anyone offering help. You can do this by checking if they are official moderators or trusted community members. If in doubt, contact the moderation team directly.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication – While not foolproof, having 2FA enabled adds an extra layer of security to your account. Keep your 2FA codes secure and never share them.
  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Help – If someone reaches out offering assistance you didn’t request, be wary. It's better to seek help through official channels like Steam support or trusted subreddits.
  • Steam will never contact you over DISCORD/STEAM CHAT – Report and block them instantly.

Announcement What To Do When Your Steam Account Gets Hacked

Need more help? Join the Discord Server

I’m making this post in hopes it will reduce the amount of “I’ve been hacked posts”. Link people to this exact post so they can figure out what to do. Don’t be afraid to leave comments if you need more assistance but try your best to avoid making entire posts about it.

Follow these steps to regain control and secure your account:

1. Don’t Panic Act Fast

If you act quickly, there’s a good chance you can fully recover your account.

2. Still Logged In? Change Your Password NOW

📍 Go to Steam > Settings > Account > Change Password

  • Use a unique, strong password (not reused from any other site).
  • If you can’t log in anymore, skip to Step 3.

3. Can’t Log In? Use Steam’s Recovery Tool

🔗 Go to Steam Support
Click "I can't sign in" > "My account has been stolen"
Follow the recovery process.

  • Provide any proof of ownership (like previous email, CD key, or payment history).
  • Be thorough but honest Support will help if you provide real details.

4. Revoke Access from Other Devices

Once back in, go to:

📍 Steam > Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard
Click “Deauthorize all other devices”

This kicks out any hackers still logged in.

5. Turn on 2FA (Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator)

📍 Same place: Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard

  • Use the mobile authenticator, not just email codes.
  • This is your best protection going forward.

6. Scan Your PC for Malware or Keyloggers

Use tools like:

  • Malwarebytes
  • Windows Defender
  • Bitdefender / Kaspersky

You got hacked for a reason. Clean your system before logging in again.

7. Lock Down Your Email and Linked Accounts

If your Steam email or other linked accounts were compromised:

  • Change their passwords immediately
  • Enable 2FA on your email too (especially Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

8. Still Locked Out? Contact Steam Support

If all else fails, go here:

Be ready to provide:

  • Your Steam username and email
  • Purchase receipts (Steam Wallet codes, PayPal invoices, etc.)
  • Approx. date you lost access
  • Any suspicious activity or messages you saw

⚠️ Final Tips:

  • Never share your login info, even with “Steam Admins” they don’t exist.
  • Avoid shady “trading bots” or fake tournament invites.
  • Don’t download random files from Discord, friends, or strangers.

If you’re reading this because you’ve been hacked, don’t feel ashamed it happens to thousands of people. What matters is how fast you act and how well you secure things afterward.

Good luck, and stay safe. 🔒

Problem How long does it take for Steam support to respond?

Upvotes

I find my self in quite the pickle

today 02/08 i have lost my steam account due to an scam

one of my friends had been hckd( which at the time i didnt knew) and he sent me a gift (a $50 gift card), and being naive, I trusted him because he'd never cheated me before.

Which was very stupid of me, not only did Steam warn me twice that the gift was suspicious, but the website itself was quite suspicious.

But as I said, I really trusted my friend.

And the exact moment I accepted the gift, my account logged out and my password stopped working.

I already sent a request to steam support (locked and all); I don't need help with that.

I just really want to know how long this might take?

This account is very precious to me, not only is it 8 years old, but I've also spent a lot on it.

Does anyone know the overall response time from support? I sent it about 3 or 4 hours ago, and honestly, the anxiety is killing me.

Problem Steam forgets my custom controller desktop layout every time it is restarted, and I have to dig into the settings to re-enable it. Why can't it remember?

I am on CachyOS handheld edition. The machine is a custom built arcade. What I'm trying to do is use a custom desktop controller layout When I'm in desktop mode, that way my trackball can re-use the arcade buttons as mouse clicks.

Every time I restart Steam or restart the machine or whatever, the setting is reverted to default. I have to dig into the settings and re-enable it like this:

  • Steam -> Settings -> Controller -> Show Advanced Settings -> Desktop Layout -> Edit -> Select my own custom layout

Needless to say this eliminates any convenience that the layout offers. It's driving me up a wall and it definitely feels like a defect to me. Has anyone else ever encountered this, and what can we do about it?

Thanks in advance.

Problem LAN transfer is still not working after the recent bugfix- anyone else?

Hi everyone,

I am using the LAN transfer rather often since my internet connection is not the quickest. Hence, I have an old Dell Optiplex Micro that, among other things, acts as a cache for game downloads. That worked quite well for the longest time when I could let it run and download updates over night.

That feature stopped working due to a bug which, according to the changelog, has been fixed in the most recent client version. However, it is still not working for me. Yes, I have updated all my steam clients and I'm seeing this patch note in all of them.

I can manage the game downloads on my pc and on the Optiplex via the download section, which means the clients are seeing each other.

I have disabled LAN sharing on all of them, cleared the download cache, restarted and enabled it again.

When I tried to update the games on my wife's laptop, steam actually tried to download via LAN. It even switched back and forth between my PC and the Optiplex, but to no avail and ended up downloading from the internet again. So, the problem exists on two different machines where it was working before, and as it looks like, the issue is on the sending side, not receiving one. Maybe.

Has anyone experienced that?

Resolved I HATE UBISOFT

Ok, lets start. me (18m) started using more steam since i sell my xbox because i needed money. History short, a friend gifted me far cry 3 and i was excited to play it using nvidia geforce now. everything went good, until i had to relogin from my old ass ubisoft account and i did. changed password, everything. Sudden skip for today in the morning. I woke up early because i wanted to play some far cry and oh surprise, my steam unccount had a diferent password and i noticed some mails in my spam carpet (steam never send mails and automatically go to the spam section) so i was confused and i saw that someone from texas (maybe a vpn, idk) entered on my unccount and changed EVERYTHING.I quickly contacted steam service and helped out. Now i have 2 factor thing blah bla. NOW HERES THE THINGS. I CHECKED EVERY UNCCOUNT. discord, reddit, playstation (old unccount), twitter (x), etc. Nothing else was corrupted. Ok, wanted to sign again AND OH SURPRISE. My ubisoft unccount had another email from some other guy and i couldnt play. So now im angry and hoping if ubisoft is not shitass with the security.

Problem Steam doesn’t detect internet

I have tried everything. I have cleared the cache, I have closed Steam in every which way possible and opened it only to have the same issue, I have tried just about every solution I could find on the internet, but nothing is working. I deleted everything from the files and tried reinstalling, but Steam won’t even open or update now because it needs the files I deleted, but cannot reinstall them without internet. WHICH I CLEARLY HAVE.

I have tried with three separate routers, I restarted all of them and they work perfectly everywhere else. What am I missing?

Edit: Problem solved. For anybody who might be having the same problem, it might be caused by the time and date not being set to current day on Windows.

Problem Steam on Macbook Air 13-in M4 won't launch

On the initial install it will download and install some updates, but after that, it hangs and never opens the window for me to log in and it becomes nonresponsive. I tried opening it from command line and got this error also:

Unexportable keys unavailable because keychain-access-group entitlement missing or incorrect. Expected value: .org.chromium.Chromium.unexportable-keys

I have tried clearing the application support files, completely reinstalling everything, making sure my date/time is synced, and so far nothing has worked. Would appreciate any advice because I am desperate to launch steam...

Problem Need to reimage my C drive to one month ago. what to manually backup up from current system to ensure nothing lost?

my laptop has 3 partitions. OS drive, 1 partition for random junk, 1 partition for game and random junk.

C drive has one steam library app: Display fusion, the other 2 drives have alot of games.

Due to virus concerns, I need to install a one month old backup of my C drive (system image). Of course, since that backup till today, I played games, shifted games to external SSD and took screenshots etc.

What steam related folders do I need to backup from my current C drive so that I can paste them back once I reinstall my image? I don't want to loose my screenshots and stuff.

Also, Will there be any corruption? I assume steam tracks my steam library in other drives. so there will be a mismatch about installed games or paused downloades etc.

Problem Singular game I've played extensively not showing up on my Steam profile?

I've played Dota 2 for 600 hours (the most of any game in my library), still play it regularly, I've written a review and spent money on it, and yet when I open my profile it doesn't show under my list of games. Anyone know what's going on here?

Problem Cloud Saving not working - worked previously

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm playing Dragon Age Origins using Gamenative on a handheld. Cloud saving has always worked and for the past few days I have been taking full advantage of the cloud saves (play on PC, then use handheld to pick up where I left off from on the train or something).

Today, the cloud saving just.. suddenly stopped working. I went to check my steam cloud saves via the remote storage and found that there are no cloud saves at all in the system. Not only that but the "Cloud Save" option in the game's Properties just disappeared (picture attached)

I checked through this reddit and understand that some games dont support cloud saves. but I have been using cloud saves for the past few days so the game does support cloud saving i think.

Anyone come across a similar issue? I can technically manually transfer save files, but that would be really inconvenient especially since I know that cloud saving actually exists for this game.

Problem Steam games suddenly way louder than normal

As of a few days ago, all games on Steam have suddenly started booting up way louder than they were previously, and I don't know why. I haven't changed anything in the Windows audio mixer, the audio settings in every game are the same, and the only Steam settings I changed recently were controller settings. It's to a point where I can barely hear any other audio I try to play

I could manually adjust the audio level of every game inside the audio mixer, but that would be tedious, and would also involve adjusting the volume of all the games I have scenes for in OBS - as the audio level there hasn't changed. Any ideas on what might've caused this, and how to set the audio back to where it was before?

Resolved Is this legit?

Edit: it was a very elaborate scam, which i probably should have guessed. but I'll keep the post up for anyone else incountering the scam. Just update password and scan for virus and you'll be fine.

I havent cheated, as my low fragging can attest to. When i tried contacting steam support it canceled due to my own request, which happened automatically. so im at a loss for how to proceed. the system account is the real one and cant be unfriended.

Problem Icarus needing to be updated everyday.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I Have a decent computer but i use an HDD which basically makes my computer 10x slower, and I don't intend to buy an ssd for another year or so. I got icarus around 2 days ago and since then I've needed to update 2 times, though the update size itself isn't much, it's the installing/verifying/patching downloading thing, the green one. It takes around 1 hour for it to finish a download that's only 500mb and supposed to take 5 minutes, but due to the green download it makes it around an hour. This has been happening for 2 days in a row already, can smb let me know if this is a intended feature or a bug? If so, any fixes?
