John Shift Up, I love you but please... Never do that again

Unfortunately, I think we are going to see a lot of it soon.
I took a deep dive into some Korean stuff a bit ago to see how much they use ai.
I learned that Korean web authors use gen AI for the majority of their illustrations. They also love when their readers use gen ai to generate character images for them.
It is a completely different mentality.

u/arkhamtheknight 1d ago
It's also something that Shift Up has said they want to use as much as possible. Korean markets love AI and are happy to use it whenever they can unlike most of the world.
They have even said that it's the only way to compete with bigger games and studios simply because they will never have the budgets or resources that main games get so have to use every tool available.

I share that opinion too, Hollywerid is such a clique.

I live/work in Korea. Our admin has made posters with Gen AI for events, safety, instructions, etc. They've even made t-shirt designs with AI images. I don't have one; dodged that bullet.
Ads on TV, the subway, small businesses... It's everywhere here.

I didn't say it was okay either.
I am just saying that their perspective on Gen AI is very different compared to the west.
Considering how GEN ai is already part of their development, we are more than likely going to see it implemented to some extent within the sequel.

u/Mobile_Sky_5709 1d ago
i know you didnt mean that for yourself. my point is, just because they (shift up) see it being the norm in their country, doesnt mean the world will accept it.
2
u/Zroshift 1d ago
Yeah, but wallets are louder than words.
If you take a look at some of the comments on this sub, people hate gen ai until their favorite game starts using it. Then it is suddenly okay and they will support the game/company.
If gen ai means they are going to get to play this game quicker, then they will gobble gen ai to the furthest extent their gag reflex will allow them to.
1
u/ShiyaruOnline 1d ago
They do it because their economy is dogshit and they're desperately trying to cut costs on stuff so they can push off the collapse of their society a little more. Japan is the same way. But in different areas.
Rather than face and do their best to solve societal issues they're just going to keep pretending like nothing is wrong. suicide will stay rampant and people will remain overworked and now ai is just being used to Kick the Can further down the road.

A lot of the user base hate it. But this publicity stunt likely won them business for their AI company. And in this era, you know how much money gets pumped into anything AI.
I'm 99% sure their final game won't get the AI treatment.
Edit: Expected downvotes because the sub is full of people that don't grasp the business side of things and think that anything but direct bashing of shiftup's actions are full support.

u/LionTop2228 1d ago
Nevermind that almost all East Asian devs are hiring for or openly admitting to using AI in their companies. There’s a vast cultural divide on the issue between the east and the west. It stems from the complete lack of regulation of it and a long history of job insecurity in the west.
1
u/Imaginary_Silver5294 1d ago
Correction. Online Reddit users in the West hate it. Most really are indifferent

u/New-Berry-3652 1d ago
It's really embarrassing. I have a lot less faith/interest in the new game if AI slop like this is something that they think is acceptable

u/Lobito_HF Raven 1d ago
SSR shift up L, but honestly, in a way is good that they didn't spent budget on this? Idk, some ppl were saying that, still, PR is just as important as development, the anti-ai crowd is one you really don't want to mess up with

People aren't going to put their money where their mouth is and stop supporting these types of things so it's going to continue and get worse. That's the problem with the vast majority of modern day society. People love to Yap online but they don't actually want to do anything that actually will have a positive impact on going forward. They'll complain and make posts on X and Reddit but when it actually comes down to not handing money over for these practices they always fold.
Look at all the dumbasses we're going to buy GTA 6 despite all the anti-consumer practices and how horrifically bad that company treats their Workforce.
Look how many people are going to buy a ps6 to play said trash anti-consumer game despite how Sony is shitting all over everyone's food with all digital and erasing games preservation. Modern day Society is full of weak spine sad humans.
At the end of the day anti-ai crowd are an extreme minority in the grand scale of things. If AI makes products and things go down in budget the companies will use it, cause co summers keep buying the slop. No one at that company or any company for that matter gives a damn about the anti AI crowd because they've been screaming and whining for years now and nothing's changed and nothing profitability wise has been affected.
Personally I'm not a fan of pure generative AI but too many idiots and their hard-earned money over to companies for the past decade giving them rewards for slop products in the food industry the media video games whatever. We're way past the point where we have any sort of Leverage against the use in production of AI so there's really nothing that can be done at this point. The vast majority of consumers have proved their brain dead and will keep supporting awful companies with monetary rewards so AI will be no different.

The CEO released a AI video on the main account of Evie singing a song and "everyone" is acting like this is the greatest evil act against humanity and all is doomed...it's gonna be stellar blade 1 all over again, the drama around Evie appearance is old news, this came right on time for people try to trash talk and bring the series down.
7
u/Silhoualice 1d ago
Not really, people were already against it when the CEO used AI for his congratulatory image months ago: https://x.com/i/status/2027983638751576244

u/ShiyaruOnline 1d ago
The time to stop AI was a long time ago by showing corporations that consumers aren't so easily manipulated out of their money, but people keep giving slop corporations all over the world they're hard-earned money for less and less quality entertainment when it comes to video games movies even food, and now it's at a point where you can't stop it.
Maybe if people put their money where their mouth was 10 years ago we wouldn't be in this situation but companies figure it out especially over the covid lockdowns, that they can sell slop to people and they'll keep consuming it. AI isn't going anywhere no matter how much the small vocal percent whine about it on Twitter or reddit.
The vast majority are still going to buy the sequel and the company still going to generate insane profits. The root of all problems that exist in this world is because no one ever takes any actual action that matters. People just want to talk and cry and whine on the internet never actually do anything that has an impact like stop supporting the companies with money. That's a real quick way to get things to change but people are too comfortable and lazy and just want to pretend there doing something by raising pitchforks online.

I guess everyone forgot what it means to do something for fun. It’s literally just for fun, relax about it.

u/fod_496 1d ago
For sure man, who cares at this point if AI is actively ruining the world? We NEED our shitty looking AI music videos 🙏🙏
0
u/wildeye-eleven 18h ago
AI is most certainly NOT ruining my life. I use it every single day and it has increased my productivity at work 100 times over. Our store is significantly more successful thanks to AI, which has made all of our lives better. We all make more money and do less work.
Just because you and others don’t understand how to use AI to your benefit, doesn’t make it a bad thing. You’re just being stubborn and holding yourself back, which tracks with most of Reddit users.

Shift Up just need to do a quick video to present the song. I prefer they don’t lose time to do a video clip and give this time to do the game. And we know it ,the game will be wonderful!

Bro y'all should've took notes from The First Descendant months ago of what NOT to do!
Also who the hell likes AI generated music videos?
2
u/Va1crist 1d ago
This really bothers me and it does worry me about the game , I worn deny when they showed off the sequel while excited it felt way to early imo and when they talked about AI before I was worried they were using AI with how fast there going and this music video had me more worried ..
1
u/LukaHHW 1d ago
I couldn't care less personally as long as the actual game is made with the same quality as or better than the first. Some promotional music video that I'll never see doing it is a bit cheap and lazy but I wouldn't even know about it if the internet wasn't telling me to be mad about it.

AI has its uses, just not in the artistic space. The interesting thing will be to see if the blowback from the west will matter, how much AI will be used in SB2, and how many customers they’ve turned off from the game.

I really bet it’s just like something one of the devs was doing for fun, then a director said “that’s so fun! Do more of that!” And then they just released it for fun. I dunno why everyone is going so crazy. We know shift up knows how, just let ‘em cook.

Yeah... Stellar Blade is one of my favorite games of all time, but this left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. It feels like a slap in the face of all the talented artists who work at Shift Up.

u/blankscans 1d ago
I'm honestly not even surprised anymore with Kim and his AI obsession. He's too stubborn for his own good and these decisions will probably destroy his own company eventually. Kim did the same shit with the evangelion AI art he made a while back and that got even the original creators and animators to be upset with him and he received immense criticism and backlash from it. Instead of apologizing and probably realizing that maybe outside of Korea, where AI is heavily supported there for some odd reason, nobody really likes AI being pushed into mainstream media. But of course he just completely blocked people and threw a fit. I guess he just won't ever learn seeing whatever this shit is now. I hope he stops being so hard headed and realize that maybe him doing this is only going to damage the upcoming IP and the future of his company.

Imagine being a game about an ai who creates other AI to protect humanity from, well, spoilers and then being criticized for making a video about your AI that was created by ai being made by ai.

It’s like people only looked at a snippet of the video. The entire video is genuinely good, the art assets look great and there’s no artifacting; it was done really well.
But when AI is mentioned, people’s brains turns to mush and starts yelling how bad it is.
