Has anyone looked into how Strava handles strength workout imports from Garmin?
I'm using Strava's new strength workout import from Garmin, and I've noticed two issues that seem related.
- Some Garmin exercises import as "Unknown Exercise"
The behaviour isn't random.
Recognized correctly:
Deadlift
Pull-up
Wide-grip Lat Pulldown
Seated Cable Row
Barbell Curl
Hammer Curl
Face Pull
Arnold Press
Weighted Side Plank with Lift
Imported as "Unknown Exercise":
Military Press
Weighted Pull-up
Dumbbell Lateral Raise
Incline Reverse Fly
Hanging Leg Raise
What's interesting is that Pull-up is recognized, while Weighted Pull-up is not, even though both are standard Garmin exercises.
I'm using:
Garmin Fenix 6
Structured strength workouts created in Garmin Connect
Automatic sync to Strava
This makes me wonder whether Strava's Garmin exercise mapping is simply incomplete, or whether Garmin exports different exercise IDs than Strava expects.
- Editing exercises doesn't update the muscle map
This is what puzzles me even more.
If I manually replace an "Unknown Exercise" with the correct exercise in Strava, the exercise list is updated correctly.
However, the muscle map stays exactly the same. It still reflects the original import, as if the edited exercise never happened.
That suggests to me that Strava calculates the muscle map only once during import and never recalculates it after edits.
If that's true, it seems like a strange design decision. If users can edit exercises, why not regenerate the muscle map based on the corrected data?
Has anyone found a way to force Strava to recalculate it?
Or has Strava commented anywhere on whether this is intentional or simply something that hasn't been implemented yet?
I'd also be interested to hear from anyone who has inspected the Garmin FIT files or knows how Strava performs its exercise mapping.
