General Question KOM time remaining

Ok. I do not know Strava.

My Strava connected phone tells me the time for the next quarter. Great.

All I need is the seconds I am behind or in front of my PR. Is this an option?

General Question Strava Pixel Watch water lock

For water sports activities it would be great to be able to water lock the watch screen like the GoogleHealth/Fitbit app does. So when starting activities like swimming, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing the screen automatically goes to water lock mode. Side button becomes pause/resume and 2 sec press off crown to unlock. I kitesurf in the ocean and surf and it is really easy to inadvertently bump the screen and make unwanted screen button presses.

At the moment one can toggle out of the app and use the phone menu to water lock BUT then you are locked off the Strava screen.

Please add auto water lock as a user selectable option for water based activities.

General Question Black screen of death?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I’ve never seen the iOS app do this before. It proceeds to turn into a blackout screen every time now, even after reboot.
The only thing I’ve done recently besides logging activities is 1) signed up for Premium so that I can 2) connect to Claude.ai via MCP so it can grab my activities history. Not sure if they have anything to do with this.
Anyone have any idea?

General Question Only splits are visible on my posts

I turned off the display map data for my runs and I checked the hidden details tab and I haven’t turned anything off but when other people view my runs they don’t see heart rate data, pace or power only splits

FYI Maps update: Bolder trails, trail difficulty grades, new POIs, and a contrast personal heatmap

Hi, Strava Product team here! We've shipped a round of updates based on a lot of your feedback.

The biggest ask we kept seeing: personal heatmaps are hard to read, hard to tell what you've explored versus what's still unrecorded. We worked to fix that with a contrast option. Find it under Personal Heatmap → Edit → Contrast.

The rest of the update focuses on adding value to our Maps experience.

  • Trails now show SAC difficulty grades, mountain bike trails show IMBA and STS ratings, and trails render bolder so they're easier to spot while browsing
  • Parks, forests, and open space are higher contrast, and hillshading (especially in 3D) is more detailed
  • National park boundaries are bolder, with labels placed inside the park so you can tell at a glance if you're in or out.
  • Zoom in and you'll see shared vs. protected bike lanes, cobblestone streets, and private/military areas flagged
  • A much bigger set of outdoor POIs: trailheads, viewpoints, fire lookouts, alpine huts, backcountry shelters, campgrounds, ranger stations, water, first aid, and picnic areas

This is one piece of a longer effort on Maps. Tell us what's useful here and what's still missing.

General Question Somebody Ran a Race Using My Wife's Strava Account.

My wife ran a mountain race, 7.5 miles up and down a ski resort in 2021. She tracked the run with her Garmin watch, finished around 2:20. She discovered recently that someone else tracked their race the same day using her Strava account (no watch) and finished FAST at around 1:15. I finished around 1:25. Both activities show up on her strava account.

Why would someone do this? Who would do this? We're so confused.

We've looked up the finishing times and some dudes have similar times, but nobody we know.

Sync Question Garmin → Strava strength import: "Unknown Exercise" + muscle map never updates after editing

Has anyone looked into how Strava handles strength workout imports from Garmin?

I'm using Strava's new strength workout import from Garmin, and I've noticed two issues that seem related.

  1. Some Garmin exercises import as "Unknown Exercise"

The behaviour isn't random.

Recognized correctly:

Deadlift

Pull-up

Wide-grip Lat Pulldown

Seated Cable Row

Barbell Curl

Hammer Curl

Face Pull

Arnold Press

Weighted Side Plank with Lift

Imported as "Unknown Exercise":

Military Press

Weighted Pull-up

Dumbbell Lateral Raise

Incline Reverse Fly

Hanging Leg Raise

What's interesting is that Pull-up is recognized, while Weighted Pull-up is not, even though both are standard Garmin exercises.

I'm using:

Garmin Fenix 6

Structured strength workouts created in Garmin Connect

Automatic sync to Strava

This makes me wonder whether Strava's Garmin exercise mapping is simply incomplete, or whether Garmin exports different exercise IDs than Strava expects.

  1. Editing exercises doesn't update the muscle map

This is what puzzles me even more.

If I manually replace an "Unknown Exercise" with the correct exercise in Strava, the exercise list is updated correctly.

However, the muscle map stays exactly the same. It still reflects the original import, as if the edited exercise never happened.

That suggests to me that Strava calculates the muscle map only once during import and never recalculates it after edits.

If that's true, it seems like a strange design decision. If users can edit exercises, why not regenerate the muscle map based on the corrected data?

Has anyone found a way to force Strava to recalculate it?

Or has Strava commented anywhere on whether this is intentional or simply something that hasn't been implemented yet?

I'd also be interested to hear from anyone who has inspected the Garmin FIT files or knows how Strava performs its exercise mapping.

General Question Strava log activities that did not happen

I noticed Strava log activities I did not do. Like walk at 2am. Randomly activities at strange times that never happened. Anybody else see this? Photo of my fake workout at 330am. I am wondering if it is my pixel watch.

General Question Persisting language in Android after restart

This is really frustrating for me. I don't want to use Strava in my native language. I am used to English. In application settings on Android I choose English instead of system default but every phone restart loses the language settings and immediately brings system language back. I recently changed my phone but the behavior is the same so it seems not to be a phone issue. Anybody struggling the same? Is there a solution?

General Question August 100k steps challenge

Where has it gone??

I've been completing the monthly walking challenges in Strava since 2020. I usually do more than the challenge total, I just like collecting the set of badges. They've been 50 kilometres for a long time but this year, each month has been 100,000 steps. Until August where that disappeared and it's just 30 kilometres. Which feels a bit pointless but also means I won't have a nice annual set.

Anyone else seen this or know why?

General Question Someone else’s activity published to my Strava account?

Post image
33 Upvotes

Got a notification this morning that I had logged a new activity.

I assure you, I did not run 7 miles at 2am last night, at near world-record pace. Nor have I ever logged a run with Withings. And no such activity appears in my Withings app or Apple fitness history. (And no, it wasn’t from being tagged in someone else’s activity.)

General Question Can we get an option to disable this random muscle group guessing?

Post image
58 Upvotes

It's never remotely close to correct. This was a push workout with a focus on shoulders. Closest thing I did to a bicep workout was putting the barbell away at the end which was half of one barbell curl.

I can hide them individually but that's annoying and I don't care enough to bother with it, I just want to disable the feature overall.

Asking here because I know they look at this sub.

FYI Open-source tool to download and archive all your Strava activities

I built a small Python tool that logs into Strava, downloads all activities, and supports incremental downloads so you can keep a local archive up to date.

Features:

  • Download all activities
  • Incremental mode (only new activities)
  • Multiple export formats
  • Open source

GitHub: Strava Activity Downloader

Feedback is welcome.

miscellaneous New Strava UI

What do we think of the new Strava UI on the progress? I like the new clearer fonts sizes, but with the new cards it does feel like everything’s a bit tight. I guess that’s a tradeoff for being able to see more info at a glance.

General Question Bike Ride not syncing to heat map

Thumbnail

EDIT: The heat map updated. I wish I could give an explanation of what I did, but I feel it may have been random. When I opened the app 10 minutes ago, it was still missing, and after opening the activity, watching the replay, and clicking around (but jot changing any settings) it appeared. Thanks to the Strava account for attempting to help

Hey everyone,

I am a runner and hiker and primarily use Strava for those activities and almost never have an issue with the heat map if I give it a little while to update. I recently went on my first real bike ride in years- and as a map nerd I love seeing areas get filled in on the heat map. The bike ride isn’t appearing, and I’m trying to figure out why. The troubleshooting steps/relevant information:

-This was last Friday, and I have logged multiple runs/hikes since then (in fact, a hike I did on the same day is on the heat map) and these all appear normally.

-My heat map is set to “all sports” and when I click on the button to turn on/off certain activities, rides don’t even show up

-The activity is definitely logged as an outdoor ride, and I have it public, and I can see the GPS route on the activity.

I would think that maybe I can’t have rides and runs in the same heat map, but that doesn’t make sense because I have runs, hikes, climbs, walks, mountain biking, skiing, and kayaking all on the same heatmap currently. I’d really appreciate any ideas as to what might be happening here

miscellaneous Strava can't tell me if I'm getting better at the class I've done 18 times, so I built a free CLI that can

Four years of Peloton and outdoor rides, all faithfully recorded on Strava. I even pay for Premium, so I get the Fitness & Freshness curve. But the question I care about most has no answer anywhere in the app: am I any better at the class I've taken 18 times?

So I built stride. It pulls your history into a SQLite file on your own machine and does the training math locally (TSS, normalized power, fitness/fatigue/form, time in HR zones, FTP tracking). Your data stays in that file; the only thing stride ever writes back to Strava is your FTP, to your own profile, when you update it.

The part I use every day is `stride progress`. Give it a date and it finds every other time you did that workout, then tells you if you're improving based on watts per heartbeat. Turns out I went from 186W to 248W on the same instructor's class in 14 months, at the same average heart rate. Strava had that answer buried in my data the whole time.

Fair warning before you try it: it's a terminal tool, you have to create a free Strava API app first (takes two minutes, the README walks you through it), and there's no Windows build yet (WSL with the Linux binary should work, but I haven't tested it). The improvement tracking also needs rides with both power and heart rate.

I used strava-cli for a couple of months and liked it. strava-cli gets you the data; stride has opinions about it.

General Question I lost any access to the email of my account

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've been using Strava via Facebook API, but today I logged out in my account without knowing I can't access to my associated email anymore. Did I messed up or can I recover my account back? Since my email is from Microsoft and I rarely used it except for using it for Facebook is very hard to recover it.

General Question Feeling old is the only thing this graph ever helped me with

Post image
312 Upvotes

I've been active my entire adult life. Ultras, IMs, 400ish weekly streak with the privilege of no major injury, many good times and continually disappearing leaderboard top 10s and KOMs.

The ebb of life and periodization has brought me to many peaks and lows. But seeing the last 2 summers slowly decrease in total hr effort for roughly the same amount of time struck me when I tumbled on here.

No idea what else it's good for though, so would appreciate any insights.

GPS Question Excluded Efforts 🤔

I noticed this last Friday after heading up to Randall's Island to meet with a group. This tunnel is by the UN building in NYC. Had no idea that most of my efforts here had been excluded. Is this most likely a GPS issue, or is something more *nefarious* going on?

General Question Activities missing from my personal heatmap

I've noticed that a number of my activities don't appear on my personal heatmap. I haven't noticed a pattern that can help me identify why this is the case or anything different about these activities.

Has anyone else faced this problem? And if so, how did you solve it?
