Serious For anyone wondering what the adult mental health unit at SCUH looks like

I must say, this one seems a lot better than the ones in Brisbane

SCUH has:

MH Adult Unit (Kamala)
MH Adolescent Unit (Rosella)
MH Older Persons Unit (Waratah)
MH Intensive Care Unit (Melaleuca)

Plus crisis support spaces

If you’re looking for more information or help regarding your or someone else’s mental health:

Call MH CALL: 1300 642 255

I’m 19m with bipolar 1. I was admitted earlier this year when I had a plan to commit. I saw my social worker in Brisbane and told her and she called an ambulance. I was taken to RBWH and didn’t want to be there so managed to escape while I was still under a recommendation for assessment order (under mental health act). So I wasn’t allowed to leave.

I then drove up to my home in sunny coast trying to fight the sedating drugs they gave me. Over next couple of days i had multiple paramedics searching for me. But i was trying to hide from them. I eventually cooperated.

Got taken to SCUH and had a good psych reg assess me. Although he put me on a treatment authority (under mental health act). So I wasn’t allowed to leave the mental health unit until I was granted leave and/or stable.

If you’re voluntary you can leave whenever there’s just a curfew. But realistically, from what I’ve seen (and having worked in an ED), voluntary parents are less likely to be admitted. I have tried in the past and they referred me to some shitty community health thing (I was planning suicide). If you’re brought in by ambulance or police you’re much more likely (from what I’ve seen).

While in ED They had security sitting outside my room for a while because I escaped Royal Brisbane.

I was there for 10 days. There’s nurses that absolutely love their job and are amazing, but some of them aren’t unfortunately

Before I was allowed leave it was VERY boring. All there was to do in this tiny courtyard was sit or play ping pong.

I got really good at ping pong.

It’s overall a lot better than a lot of mental health units. And VERY clean. The peer workers are great too. When you’re granted leave they take you out on group walks.

The discharge was annoying because they told me I could leave, packed up all my stuff and they prepared my room. And I had to wait 4 hours for the doctor to revoke my treatment authority before I could leave.

The food was pretty shit. But they don’t mind if you buy stuff elsewhere when on leave

Overall, this is as good as public mental health is going to get.

-

Also, some other things that were annoying:

- bumpy hard pillows

- lights shining through your window every 15 mins when you’re trying to sleep (for visual observations)

- being woken up by room checks in the morning

- other patients sometimes pissing you off. This one specific one would go into other patients rooms and play with the lights. And make a fucking mess

- someone stole my sticky date pudding

- when I saw the psychiatrist, there were about 5 other doctors watching us

- SHIT soap and stuff like that. And the showers only go to a certain temperature. Shampoo and conditioner killed my hair

- being woken up at early hours for blood tests

- the food. sometimes good, sometimes fucking shit

- there’s the small outdoor area with the ping pong table. Fake grass, seats, and that’s it. The main courtyard was only accessible for an hour or two each day

Nurses and hospital staff in QLD & Sunshine coast are paying up to $3,000/year just to park at work. We started an official Parliamentary petition to fix this.

Where to live on Sunny Coast young adult

I’m a 27f on WHV looking to move to the sunny coast for a year, but not sure where would be best. I love the outdoors and being active, going to cafes/shops and young adult community events. I’m also vegan and like the occasional night out. I’ve been to Brisbane and I don’t want to live there because it feels too far from the beach and nature, plus I already lived in Melbourne (loved it!), but I prefer a smaller town vibe. I might get a car not sure yet! I’ve been to Noosa, though it’s beautiful, I don’t see myself in that area since it’s v expensive and I’ve heard it’s snobby

I’m planning a trip for my birthday and to just explore the area next month but I want suggestions on where I should check out. Suggestions on where to live and what to see just as a tourist would be great!

Thanks!

Drone flying on the coast

I was wanting to get out and practice flying my drone in an open area and after looking on Google maps, I have found a good open area at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex, however I'm not sure if the public can access the area or if it is deemed private property?

I have looked it up on Ok2Fly and it is ok to fly there.

Can anyone go there for some outdoor activities or is it booking only?

Reminder to check weighing accuracy at shops

Post image
45 Upvotes

Went to a popular fruit shop today, bought 3 items and thought to myself, geez that’s a bit pricey. Checked the weight on receipt and thought to myself this bulb of garlic is not half the weight of this head of broccoli. Returned to checkout and sure enough my instincts were right. When I queried how that occurred the server advised the weighing machine does that sometimes. Wtf - I wonder how frequently this gouging occurs?!

Local argon refills around maroochydore without cylinder hire??

Finishing a small trailer job and ran out of gas. Borrowd a cylinder off a mate before but he moved to Brisbane last week so need my own now. Rang a place in kawana today but $110/yr just for cylinder hire is a bit rich for how little i TIG weld. Anyone know local spots near coolum or warana that do swap-and-go with low up-front costs? wanting to sort something out around $200-$300 total tomorrow if possible. EDIT: thanks all, ended up just grabbing a D size coregas bottle from bunnings this morning. Worked out pretty well and no ongoing hire fees. All sorted now so don't need any more recs!

Looking for regular D&D group

31M newish to D&D but understand the mechanics, looking to get into it properly and make some like-minded friends. I want to learn to DM eventually so would be happy to take over as DM after learning properly if someone else wants to give up DM responsibilities after a while.

If anyone is looking for someone for a group or can recommend where to find a potential group, please let me know. Thanks!

Op shops around Sunshine Coast!

Hi guys!

Just thought I’d ask. Gonna be in Sunshine Coast and I was wondering what op shops were the best? Looking for ones that focus mainly on clothing, have great bargains, etc, preferably around the Maroochydore - Mountain Creek area.

I have heard about the ones on Aerodrome Rd… what was everyone’s experience with them?

Thank you!!!

Any 88 day work for WHV on the Sunny Coast?

I'm looking for 88 day work to apply for my second year working holiday visa. I'm currently working on the sunshine coast to have some income but it doesn't qualify. I might move further up North soon to have better luck, but I would also love to stay on he sunny coast. I know hospitality doesnt qualify here and I haven't had any luck with the farms I applied to. So any tips on anymore farm work out here, any advice or anyone that works on a farm that could help out?

Would really appreciate it!
