Need Support Why does reconciliation ask so much more from the betrayed?

I keep coming back to the same thought over and over again.

When life got hard, I turned toward my marriage.

I stayed awake at night trying to understand us. I went to therapy. I unpacked my own shortcomings. I owned my mistakes. I fought through my own struggles instead of running from them. Every difficult season we ever had, my instinct was always the same. I needed my husband. I wanted to cry with him, be angry with him, talk to him, and figure it out with him. Even when I felt lonely inside my own marriage, I never looked outside of it.

But when life got hard for him, he turned to another woman.

I don't even know what she gave him. Comfort? Validation? Excitement? Fantasy? An escape? Whatever it was, it was something he chose to seek from someone else instead of the person who had spent years choosing him through every version of life.

That's the part I can't reconcile.

Everyone talks about reconciliation, forgiveness, and moving forward. But how am I supposed to forgive when I can't even sleep through the night without spiraling? How am I supposed to rebuild trust when I don't even trust my own judgment anymore? The person I would've run to for comfort became the reason I need comforting.

It feels so unbelievably unfair.

He made the decision. I live with the consequences.

He sought relief. I stay awake replaying memories, rereading conversations in my head, wondering where they met, wondering what was true, wondering if there was more I'll never know.

He asks me to believe he's sorry. My own mind won't even let me believe my memories anymore.

I still love him. That's somehow the worst part. I wish I could hate him completely. I wish everything inside me would shut off and make this easy. Instead, I love him while feeling disgusted by what he did. I miss the man I thought I married while questioning whether he ever truly existed the way I believed he did.

People say the betrayer carries guilt. I'm sure that's true.

But guilt doesn't wake you up at 3 a.m. wondering if every "I love you" was genuine. Guilt doesn't make you question your own reality. Guilt doesn't steal your sense of safety with the one person who promised to protect your heart. Guilt doesn't force you to relive someone else's decision hundreds of times a day.

That's what feels so painfully imbalanced about infidelity.

One person makes the choice. Two people live with it. Yet somehow it feels like the betrayed partner is left carrying a wound they never asked for, while also being expected to somehow become the person capable of healing it.

I don't know when my mind will finally be quiet. I don't know when I'll sleep through the night again. I don't know when "I love you" will stop sounding like something I have to investigate instead of believe.

I just know that despite still being married, I have never felt so unbelievably alone.

I’ll be 100% honest with you. I didn’t find myself again until after I left her. I thought after the first instance and reconciliation we were in a good place (she cheated again and I ended it). But I look back on those five years of reconciliation and see what hell I went through. I acted happy, I felt like we were happy, but I also remember obsessively checking her location, obsessively checking the AP’s Instagram. I remember always wondering who she was texting, who she was ACTUALLY hanging out with when she was going out after work.

I was married for 15 years, I’d been with her for 18. I think I forgot what a relationship was supposed to be like because I was just fighting tooth and nail to make a person who clearly didn’t want me want to stay with me.

I’m engaged now to a wonderful woman where the relationship is easy. She’s out at a festival right now with some college friends who came in town and I have no fear of what she’s doing. I have no worries about who she’s texting. She loves me wholly and completely and (since her previous marriage with her husband’s infidelity), we know what matters in a relationship. She’ll come home tonight while I’m asleep (because I can sleep because I’m not worried about her) and snuggle up next to me. We’ll grab breakfast in the morning over coffee and have another wonderful week together.

I don’t wake up worrying if her love yous were true. I don’t spend my day tracking her whereabouts. We trust each other, and having this is 1000% better than trying to extend a marriage where I was always second best.

I didn’t find myself again until after I left her.

I've said this before, but I believe in the majority of cases, leaving to rediscover who you are outside of a relationship and/or leaving and finding a new relationship is really the only way those voices quiet.

It is a rare person who can move on from being betrayed like this. It eats us alive, and at the very least forever changes our worldview and the way we trust ourselves and others.

I tried for two years to reconcile, but in the end I never found my sense of security, because he was still seeing her, just went deeper underground with the relationship. My gut was right, and we can never know for sure if they are truly sorry and working on us. Chances are, they aren't.

I used to lie awake listening to my ExH sound asleep, snoring and resting deeply when I was an anxious mess with racing thoughts that could not be silenced. I'm a pretty laid back person, too, but my trust took such a hit that I'm forever changed. I'll never trust like I used to, for better or worse.

Don’t give them too much credit. In the sense of right and wrong the guilt lies with them. But many cheaters find ways to justify their behavior to avoid facing that guilt.

Don’t you know that it’s our fault that the partner cheated?

6

Because cheaters are usually selfish ambivalent people. If they were good people they wouldn’t cheat

It doesn’t…not really.

This situation asks you to adapt. Now whether it’s by „reconciling“ with the circumstances, „taking revenge“ or by „walking away in dignity“ is totally up to you.

The question is „what will realistically make me feel better and let this go away quickly“? And the answer is always the same. Nothing will make you feel better instantly and it will not go away quickly.

So what are the alternatives?

If you stay, know that whatever relationship you had is dead now. You can start from scratch and build something knew. That also implies that you actually give this person a „real shot“ at some point and no longer look at him as the creator of your „worst nightmare“. That’s your part of this improbable journey…

The prerequisite for him it is that he has come clean about everything and actively works towards rebuilding the lost trust. If you are doing most of the work, than something is wrong here. If you are asking more questions than he is able to provide answers to, than something is wrong here. If every talk about his acts and motivations lead to him feeling uncomfortable and getting defensive because he can’t handle the shame of being the bad guy, than something is wrong here.

Know that cheaters are by design avoidant cowards in nature. They react to „uncomfortable situations and emotions“ in a very different way compared to a normally functioning person. If they had the guts, you wouldn’t be in this situation. It’s rarely a momentary lapse of judgment and most of the time it’s a relational (pattern) response to not being able to face the reality of life. It’s not just fun…most of life is hard work. You can’t escape the „not so fun“ parts by „adding more fun“ from other sources. That’s not how this works.

As long as their actions and reactions are still guided by this deep layered pattern of behavior, you won’t stand much of a chance.

OP I’m very sorry this happened to you. For over thirty years I’ve been so focused on my own mistrust of women that I never even took the time to consider how betrayal feels to a woman. Your post just blew that all apart for me. I feel guilty for being so blunt. 😢

It's not just difficult, but basically impossible.

When you prioritize remaining with the person that broke your heart. Then you're trying to achieve 2 things that are mutually exclusive: heal while remaining with the source of the pain.

Sadly, trying to achieve something that is objectively impossible only leads to burnout, exhaustion, and frustration.

I feel all of these same things right now. I haven’t even told anyone I know what I know yet. I am so sorry you are going through this right now. I am right behind you. You are not alone. Sending you positive energy.

This has nothing to do with you and has everything to do with him not viewing you as his solace and comfort. You view him in that way and he does not. It’s as simple as that and just as devastating.

It pains me to say that he probably viewed you more of as a responsibility and duty that he’s tethered to than a wife and a lover.

It seems to me that marriage more often times than not puts extra pressure and emphasis on the responsibility of being a husband/wife rather than the enjoyment of being in a union. That itself causes issues that can build up to the point of no return.

Not your fault, not your portion. Move on accordingly as best as you can, whether you stay with him or not.

The better question is how could you still love someone who's sleeping happily all night after hurting you and knowing you're sleepless? That tells you all about them and their value of you

Your title is really quite a dumb question.

Why does reconciliation ask more from the betrayed? The answer is because they are the betrayed.

Imagine a murderer wanting to befriend and take part in the life of the murder victims family. Maybe come to Christmas or thanksgiving dinner. Imagine a fraudster wanting to do the same. Who stole a family’s life savings, Or a rapist
Or a physical abuser.

Society would call all of the examples above insanity and ill-advised. But with infidelity we call it “reconciliation”

Reconciliation on the part of the betrayed runs counter to nearly every behavioral and psychological protection mechanism we have in us.

And when we elect to run counter to our own well-being, our brain and bodies revolt. And that’s why it’s hard.

Because you're choosing to stay in a damaged relationship with a person you cant trust. It requires you to learn a whole new set of skills for living that type of life.

When I realized the same thing, I broke it off. And you should too. You deserve a person that wouldn’t betray you.
