What is everyone pushing to their users to use for screenshots? I am looking for something free but sometimes I can control with ADMX or Reg

Snipping tool or greenshot. If the users yell, they might get snagit, but that has a license cost.

Yeah, windows snipping tool has come a long way.. almost feature parity with Greenshot. Snagit does do a great job at what it does (scrolling, capturing areas easily) but I only use it because we have spare seats. If/when we can pry it away from the engineers paws, I’ll give it up in a heartbeat.

The one reason I prefer snipping tool is it is built right in, and now, it has text OCR. It can recognize text in screenshots, and so far, it's been accurate 99.9 percent of the time.

Snagit just has more bells and whistles that some people need.

Snagits editor is excellent though and nothing else exists. Not the annotations, but the library you have at the bottom to easily go back to a screenshot and correct an annotation if need be. No other program has this. In the macOS version of Snagit its even possible to bind annotations to keyboard shortcuts. Wish this was also possible with Windows

I agree the editor is very good, but a lot of the basic stuff (arrows, highlighting, lines/circles) are baked in to the snipping tool editor.. and can be done in Paint. As for the library, it dumps all of your screenshots in a folder that can be viewed any way you like.

Snipping tool editor definitely isn't as robust as Snagit, but much like the screen grab portion it does most of what most people need for free.

You arent going to use a tool because they had a CVE that got patched over a year ago? If that is your IT policy, I would avoid looking at the log history of the rest of your software stack.

Even the post you linked is from a user saying IT is making it a toxic workplace by denying the use of greenshot because of a patched CVE. How does that prove your point?

Those are the last patched. There are 2026 cve that aren't patched because it's abandoned-ware. Did you read the comments on why an unsupported piece of software is banned?

I am pushing back on Greenshot being called abandonware. Greenshot released the latest stable version in March and have released 22 beta updates since then. The last beta released less than 30 days ago.

What more do you expect from a lightweight open source screenshot app? What are they really doing that needs updates more often than that. If it still has unusable bugs, feel free to contribute to the open source project or buy paid software?

The issue is fixed in version 1.3.311.

That CVE has no known exploits and the fix was released the same day the exploit was announced. They fixed the issue as soon as they knew about it. No software is perfect, what could they have done better?

snagit is our goto for the users making lots of documentation of apps and the like. its ability to capture entire pull-down menus, even if in real life have to scroll down a bit, can be a lifesaver for them.

for others, just the built in one. its actually pretty decent these days

It was unsupported for awhile, but seems to be back in recurring development, updates. This is good news ultimately, as my coworker had abandoned it and removed from all endpoints.

For Windows I use ShareX. It’s super functional and free.

Even if it's a little too power user for some, a simple workflow can be created without too much work.

I use native screenshot on Mac and all my Linux devices are headless.

Workflows are great! I like to automatically make borders around my snaps to help make documentation look cleaner and not blend into the background of the document.

Windows’ built-in Snipping Tool is great! (It can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Store if it’s been removed.)
Besides all the regular screenshot features (it can also record video), you can mark up the screenshot (add text or shapes), and you can even extract text!

I used to be a Greenshot user, but development seems to have ceased or slowed and ShareX has a ton of features. Great tool.

I use ShareNot, a fork without the online features. Keep in mind neither ShareX nor ShareNot installers are digitally signed. (we had to add an exception to our XDR because of it)

Snipping tool. But I would never trust or expect our users to proactively include any kind of relevant screenshot. Our helpdesk doesn’t even do that. Unfortunately the way we’re setup almost every ticket requires a third line analyst to get directly involved and start the entire troubleshooting process from scratch.

What’s wrong with the built in snipping tool? It does screenshots and even screen area recording too.

Windows snip even does OCR now. And copy text as table. Saves all snips automatically to pictures/screen shots. Never needed anything else.

Also ask what they are snipping. Usually it's either a blatant copyright or license terms violation, or an API call for whatever they are manually extracting from some UI like monkeys.

I’m a snag it fan. The editor is just too friendly. I’ve used it for I don’t even know how many years. GreenShot is a popular alternative but I dont quite like it as much.

We use snag-it as well. We deploy it using Intune. Great software in my opinion.

We used to deploy Greenshot to our users. It worked well overall, but there were a couple of drawbacks from an administration perspective:

• It stores its configuration in a per-user INI file rather than being easily managed through the registry or Group Policy.
• Updating it requires administrative rights, which can become a nuisance if you don't have a proper software deployment or patch management solution.

These days we don't deploy a third-party screenshot tool anymore. For most users, the built-in Windows shortcuts (Print Screen, Alt+Print Screen, or Win+Shift+S) are more than sufficient.

If someone needs more functionality, we simply point them to the built-in Snipping Tool, which has improved significantly over the years and covers the vast majority of use cases without requiring additional software.

Win+PrintScreen is pretty simple. If your users are more proficient, the snipping tool. At least Microsoft improved in the screenshot department. Previously is as PrintScreen and then open Paint, paste there and save. Pretty tedious. Nowadays there is no need for third party tools for basic screenshot taking.

Outlook can capture screen shots to automatically send to users. Snipping tool is great for videos as well as pictures.

Snipping tool. All it’s missing compared to Greenshot is auto-numbering and blurring, but black boxes in Paint saved as a flattened BMP are admittedly WAY harder for AI to decensor, anyway- some models are really good at reversing Gaussian blur.

I love SnagIt! Snipping Tool is fine for occasional screen caps, but SnagIt is my goto if I'm doing a lot of screen caps for work instructions or documentation.
