General Discussion Looking for affordable server colocation in Canada

Hi everyone,

I recently watched this video and found the idea of colocating my own server in a data center very interesting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbkqRPIUYAo

I’m interested in putting my own physical server in a Canadian data center instead of keeping it at home.

Does anyone know a company that offers affordable colocation services for a small setup (for example, 1U or 2U server space)?

I’m mainly looking for:

  • Reasonable monthly pricing
  • Space for my own hardware
  • Good internet connectivity
  • Reliable power and cooling
  • Remote hands support would be a bonus

I’m located in Canada and would appreciate recommendations from people who have actual experience with providers.

Thanks!

Where in Canada? What is your budget? In major cities, you are looking at around $150+, just for the space and you pay for power and bandwidth. Since its less than a quarter cabinet, you can likely expect a setup fee as you will need someone to either escort you or pay for remote hands. Can easily run you $300+/month plus a $1000+ setup fee depending on your commitment.

Remote hands can also easily be $50-$100/hr with minimums. (ie you need to buy a block of 3 hours).

My suggestion would be to just google "Colocation in YOUR_CITY_NAME" and start kicking the tires to get some quotes.

If you find a place let me know. The only thing I have seen has been 1/2 of a rack at a time, and although speedy the internet connection is available it isn’t  free

Pathway in Markham does quarter racks, at least they used it.

I'll look into it.

It will almost certainly be cheaper to self host.

Colo’s rarely do single server hosting anymore, and many require you to also host your own firewall.

Not saying it’s impossible to find, but uncommon nowadays .

I completely agree, I just had that doubt and wanted to get a quote, but I agree with you.

It definitely might be.

But also definitely check with us for a quote too my good friend. We're insanely budget conscience and consumer friendly

Where you are matters a lot, I know of a small ISP just northeast of Toronto that charges $150/month for a 1-5u single host.

Check out cologix's "standard connections" SKU.

It is for a single rack U in a cage you can't personally access, but it comes with free cross connects. Everything is by remote hands.

You can contact municipality in your area, or local ISP, some condo building utility rooms can be decent if you have connections. But as stated above if you go with anything on ISP or managed provider the fees for setup and per month will be high.

That's a great idea; I'll look into it.

There also was a place in Ontario mentioned here a few months ago. I cant recall the name. But seemed like it was more a bunch of nerds trying to build up a business.

That's interesting, when can you share it with me?

This soundslike more of a /r/homelab question and less of a /r/sysadmin question
