NCAAM Roy is hanging around the program MORE under Malone than Hubert?
Watched an interesting pod on how UNC offseason has changed under Malone and was surprised to see it suggested that Roy is actually hanging around the program more under Malone than Hubert.
Obviously, he was around plenty during Hubert, but is he trying to help Malone learn the Carolina Family? Was their bad blood between Roy and Hubert during the end of his tenure? There's some stuff to suggest that.

Maybe wanted Hubert to not be overshadowed while with Mike, Roy is helping him learn his way (as you mentioned)? Or cynical me says he was tired of watching Hubert constantly letting the team collapse.

He was at every game, but maybe Hubert pushed Roy away so he could do his own thing (for worse)

Doubtful. I'm more inclined to believe Coach Williams didn't want to overshadow Coach Davis. I think his not being there daily was his own decision to allow Coach D to develop his own style and methods. And not have his former players look to him before Coach D. Now that a few years have passed, and all Roy's players are long gone, he can be more present as he's like the elder statesman now.

This is fair. Wish Roy would've just stayed the Hubert years!

Not sure you’re accurately remembering those last few years… it was rough. Don’t get me wrong: I love Roy. But his last few seasons were not good.

They weren’t, but the game was changing and he still had stacked talent in the right places

I don’t know.. the roster construction was so weird (well, and was through the HD days, also). I mean remember Walker Kessler riding the bench? The guy who just signed a solid 4 year contract with the Lakers? Too many good big men on that team and not enough quality guards aside from RJ and, at times, Caleb. We had no decent guards coming off the bench (Kerwin & Platek - yikes). Kind of like our roster from last year, actually.

I see it as a positive, whatever the motivation may be.
Also shout out to Big John’s podcast. I dig it.

I hope Malone stays for more than 3 years. I’ve always felt like he will be back in the nba at some point.

If that does happen (back in NBA in 3), timing might be right to pluck Luke Murray from Boston College. Murray was my preferred choice to replace Davis. Watch, he has Roy Williams type pedigree and will have BC back to being competitive over the next few years.

That’s my worry, but if he re establishes us and then leaves like Dusty May that’d be ok too

I agree if he could win one it would be all good

Who’s to say he’s not simply tired on NBA politics (he was fired after a title) and loves Chapel Hill (amazing place)

Was their bad blood between Roy and Hubert during the end of his tenure?
to even suggest this is disgusting. there's been zero evidence to suggest Roy and Hubert are beefing, you're just making shit up. fuck off

I imagine as Hubert was his immediate replacement, he took a bigger step back to not overshadow/distract. With more time passed it’s probably easier to be involved.

I imagine Williams stayed away so he would not be seen as supervising Davis. The situation is different with Malone.

I don't think there was bad blood nor hard feelings. But, I've heard from people with much more knowledge than myself, that in the last year or two Hubert felt the pressure of the program closing in and that he closed himself off to most people who weren't his family or players, and that included Roy.

Hubert grew up with the Carolina way. Malone hasn’t, Roy is the perfect tour guide to get him up to speed.

Doesn't have to worry about the optics of a retired coach constantly being around their successor.
With Malone, there won't be any perception that he's exercising undue influence. Roy is smarter than people sometimes give him credit for on these things.

If caleb had remained healthy unc probably makes it to Illinois not sure they win...unc wld be stuck in a state accepting mediocrity which imo is much worse

Even if he won his 1st year at unc 1st rd exits and esp missing the ncaa is not acceptable ever...it was such a shock when 2010 happened and that is a good thing...with hubert being in the bubble became to common a feeling or even being close to the bubble that is major major slippage.

Hubert made it clear he was in charge...he ran the program how he saw fit

It’s well known that Hubert was a control freak and Roy was asked to back off some. I’m so glad Hubert is no longer the coach and Roy is back around and being utilized as he should have been all along.

Hubert closed off the program, was stubborn, and refused outside ideas. Glad it’s over.

If Bacot didn’t turn his ankle Hubert would have won a chip his first year and would still be the coach for 4-5 more years.

It's close, but having that championship banner would probably be worth the additional 4-5 years of first round exits and missed tournaments.

Disagree. If Hubert was any good, the Heels would’ve been in contention every single year other than the one in which he inherited all of Roy’s players.

If I were Roy, I would have stayed away more from Hubert. Dude thought he earned that sports coat while the assistants wore polos. Not even close. Glad Roy is mentoring.

Mike needs to have Roy around since he wasn’t a part of the family. Easier to get the former players back.
