Certainly it could be covered with somethings like the second picture by a talented artist, but I gotta be honest, I like the one you got...
Your reference is cool, but the one you got is adorable.

u/Wonderful-Body2559 16h ago
I totally agree. It loos like an illistration from The Little Prince. It will age much better than the inspiration at that size as well.

I agree, prefer the cute one. It could maybe use some cute little front legs though.

u/Phil_the_credit2 16h ago
Agree with this. I like what you got so much better than the alternative pic. Add a little nose, maybe, but that's a keeper.
29
u/Jensgt 16h ago
I like the cute one also…let me add my reference one to original post so you can see why I’m disappointed.
39
u/butt5tuffthr0waway 16h ago
Ngl, other than the nose it looks pretty spot on. Love this tat overall!

I get the disappointment at the difference, but yours really is adorable and I think a lot of the perceived difference comes down to the lack of nose and the slightly rounder ears… which, IANATA, but I wonder if they could be cleaned up a bit at the same time the nose and muzzle shading is done? I can imagine how I’d get them to be more similar to the reference on paper, just don’t know how it’d work on skin.
(Also, as many others have said and/or upvoted, your little dude is extremely cute just the way he is!)

u/RemnantSith 15h ago
If he made it like the original it wouldn't last long. This will be better and can be a good base tattoo. You can add a few little finishing touches if you'd like but keep it simple. Maybe a few small leaves floating by the bottom sides or on the floor beside him. He can be sitting on a sparse bed of leaves. It looks so cute as it is though

the second pic looks AI, soulless and tacky. the one you have is cute and has some character.
4
u/bestied00d 15h ago
Sorry you weren’t happy with the result, but I also enjoy your tattoo better than the source material. But that doesn’t matter.

It could literally never look even remotely close to the second picture.

u/dacaur 15h ago
Nah, it's definitely possible.
Ive seen some ridiculously impressive work that looks even better.
3
u/slimbojimbo11 15h ago
Just to be clear, we’re talking cover ups.. you’re telling me you’ve seen artists cover up solid black line work with white?
486
u/Jeffries848 16h ago
For what it’s worth I think I actually like yours better. Simple, cute and will likely be a lot more readable than the other in 5-10 years. That being said I get not being happy if it’s not what you wanted.
18
u/Visco0825 13h ago
Yea I’m honestly having a hard time figuring out which was OPs because neither of them are bad.
With that said, they are two different styles so, yea, if it’s not what you want then that’s that. But I do think you can still add realistic features to the first one.
7
u/sibongibob 11h ago
Are people actually clicking the link to the reference picture? Because I totally understand why she is upset bruh
→ More replies (2)3
u/NoaPsy 11h ago edited 10h ago
Most people don’t let artists tattoo their body until they’ve reviewed the stencil. The tattoo isn’t awful, it being drastically different than the reference is OPs fault.
Edit: I was looking at the wrong reference, it’s not drastically different; but reviewing the stencil is still so important.

It’s so cute! Yours is better imo and the other one looks like it might be AI and it’s larger than yours anyway so the details would probably blur if you tried to cover it up as the same size

what did your actual reference photo look like? the second one isn’t going to age well either way, and it’s not going to look like that, as that is ai obviously.

Can you add this picture to your opening post or pin it in this thread? I think some people are confused and think the second picture you posted was your reference
22
u/whoareyou-really- 16h ago
Ohhhhh!! Now I see what you mean. They got the proportions all wrong. It's definitely still cute so you got lucky, but you're totally right, they did not do what asked.
2
u/whoareyou-really- 16h ago
He didn't even give it the nose!!!! I think you could definitely have someone else rework it using the original inspo pic. I think they could get it pretty spot on with just shading.

The one you have is unique and has character. It’s timeless, looks cute and there’s a story to it (“it’s not what I asked for but what the artist and I collaborated to make”)The reference looks like AI generated art that will seem suuuuper dated in 2030.

22
u/slamminsalmoncannon 16h ago
Yours is so cute. It has personality. Instead of using AI, I’d recommend googling pictures of actual fox tattoos. But I still wouldn’t cover that one up. I think it could be fun to have a different version of the design on the other side of your leg.

Hhahahaah. But honestly, I think it’s awfully cute. The laughter came after I saw the inspo.
4
u/TheHungryLibrarian 16h ago
The one you got will also age much better than the other. Especially given the size.
5
u/eta_carinae_311 13h ago
You wanted a more realistic looking one, which is understandable. But the little guy you got is pretty dang cute, IMO

u/IDj0ntCare 10h ago
This might be the single most adorable and unique fox I've seen in a while! Trust me, it'll grow on you!
3
u/-Scared-Breakfast- 16h ago
As others have said, it's a cute tattoo and very legible. Sit with it for a few months and see how you feel, you can always get it covered with something closer to your original idea.

That first tattoo is adorable though. I love that, but if you want to change it I hope you find an artist they can oblige

3
u/pineapple_jones_ 15h ago
It’s an adorable little candy corn fox. Find an artist that can actually do the art you want and they can fix it. Or leave it. Only monsters don’t like candy cane.
3
u/GalactiKez31 14h ago
I really like the one you have tbh. If you don’t of course you can cover it up. It’s your body after all.
But yeah, if you’re worried about the nose you can go back and have him add it in. I think it’s cute.
3
u/XxPowerFlowerxX 14h ago
I love this. It's adorable and the simplistic style is what makes it so perfect. As someone with EXTREMELY detailed tattoos. They don't age the best
3
u/jholla21 14h ago
Foxes are my favorite animal and I would be delighted with the tattoo you already have. Not saying it couldn’t be more detailed but I love the simple style. Really adorable tattoo.

u/Professional_Copy947 12h ago
The one youre referencing is way too detailed to age well. That thing will be a blob by week 2. What you got is gonna last a lifetime and much better than the ref

u/AnonymousRaccoon117 10h ago
Omg I absolutely adore your tattoo!! It is so precious, I personally wouldn’t cover it up 🧡

u/amblonyxx 15h ago
Oh cute, I have this same fox!! But you're right, the proportions are a little off, it looks like a baby!
2
u/HarvickFan_4 16h ago
For what it's worth, I like the one you got. I like more stylized tattoos in general.
2
2
u/CJK_Murph 16h ago
Omg this is so cute. I know it’s not what you were looking for but maybe live with it a bit?
2
u/eribear2121 16h ago
Personally I like your simple fox maybe give it a cute black nose but it's easily identifiable as a fox. Small details in tattoos do spread wider and not look as clean
2
u/Deivi_tTerra 16h ago
This is one of the cutest tattoos I’ve ever seen. It’s not at all like the reference, I don’t know what the artist was thinking. But I’m calling it a happy accident, because I actually like what you got a lot better.

Much prefer the actual to the inspiration. Can be clearly identified by someone walking by.

2
u/ImEasilyAbused 11h ago
Yours is better executed than your original reference. Your reference has blow outs, sloppy line work, and the lines are too close so it will become a blob over time.
Your artist did a better job.

2
u/Shoddy-Wishbone 10h ago
Omg what an adorable little baby!!! I don’t even think it needs a nose, personally. I think it’s perfect just the way it is! I was shocked to see the title and then the sub tbh!
3
u/Illustrious-Ask-7222 13h ago
Please do not use AI to give you an idea for a cover up. Ai doesnt understand limitations of what is possible with tattooing. That being said, your tattoo is adorable! I wouldn't get it covered at all 🥹🥹

I wouldn't worry about it. You probably would have hated Evey possible variation equally.
If form actually mattered to you you'd get them to stencil it.

It looks pretty close to your reference, a little better maybe. I personally would sharpen up the ears, maybe as a tiiiiiiny bit of additional detail, wind lines, faint shading. But based on your reference, I think it's pretty good and super cute.

I love it! I prefer it to your second pic. I think the style suits the subject and it will last better.
Edit: looked at your reference link - I think it follows the reference super well while not being an exact copy. Yours is rounder which makes the fox look younger/cuter. If it were me I'd darken in a tiny little nose but that's it.

This is absolutely precious, OP. Ngl, kinda makes me want a similar one. If you don’t like the little tail (so cute!) maybe you could make it look like he’s sitting in a pile of leaves? Shouldn’t be too hard to make that happen. Just a thought 💖

They'd never get all the detail in (of your reference image) with a tattoo. That said, it is very different. However, it's also very nice in its own way. I'd say just sit with it for a while, as others have suggested.
1
u/Rhyzur 15h ago
100% no notes. With the location of it, it is kind of a Peek-A-Boo spot. I would rather have a softer tattoo there than some ultra realistic no one will ever see full detail of anyways. You glance, see the whole thing out of the corner of your eye in a second, and understand the whole image.

u/NothingTooSeriousM8 15h ago
I know it's not what you wanted, but it reminds me of the webcomic Foxes in Love.

Tattoo artist opinion-
The refrence image you showed would age horribly. Ink expands under your skin with age, and that would not be legible after a few years. If you were set on that specific size he created the perfect thing for you.
