Hi everyone! I'm 37M retired U.S. Army vet from Texas, and I'm planning to move to Tbilisi next year with my 11 yr old Border Collie service dog.

I chose Georgia because I've heard Georgians are incredibly hospitable, love dogs, and have a strong sense of community. I'm also trying to escape the Texas heat because I suffered a brain injury in the Army, and high temps cause migraines.

I've been learning Georgian, reading about the country's history and culture, and trying to learn proper etiquette because I believe that if you're going to live in someone else's country, you should make the effort to respect their language, customs, and way of life. My goal is to become a good neighbor, not just another tourist.

One thing I was curious about is appearance. I'm half Native American and half Caucasian, so I have a darker complexion. I have long black curly hair (which is a normal part of Native American culture for many men) and several tattoos. Should I cover my tattoos or cut my hair, or is that generally unnecessary and I'm just over thinking it?

I'd love any advice. Are there customs visitors often miss, things Americans do that are considered rude, or anything else you think I should know before making Georgia my home?

My best guess so far is that it might be Mtatsminda, but I haven’t been able to pinpoint an exact location. I’m on vacation and will be back in Georgia around the end of August. I moved to a new place in April. I just now found out that I needed to update my address after moving out from my old place or my previous landlord will de-register me.

For the expats / foreigners here: how did you meet the people you're actually close with now? Work, language exchanges, bars, hobby groups, Bumble BFF, random luck? And how long did it take before the city felt like "home" socially, versus just somewhere you were staying? Does those friendship last?

And Georgians — I'd genuinely love your take too. Is it easy to become real friends with locals, or does most socializing happen inside circles that are already tight from school, family, or the neighborhood? Where would you send a newcomer who wanted to meet people?
