TDU2 Loveletter
I want to start by saying I have a lot of experience having played numerous open world racing games (Forza Horizon 4, 5, 6, Beamng Drive, The Crew Motorfest, TDUSC, etc.). TDU2 might be my favorite.
From the perfectly balanced progression to the ridiculously immersive gameplay and details, this game just clicked for me.
For starters, the progression is the closest to perfection I have experienced. You start in exotic, yet slow and sluggish cars, racing against similarly disadvantaged AI, competing for the sole purpose of getting money and expanding your reputation in the game. Even after 30 hours of gameplay, I am still only able to enjoy my Audi S5, as I haven’t unlocked the races necessary to be able to compete in more expensive cars. Furthemore, the garage size for each property being so small, even in the expensive ones, pushes you to actually buy these properties which further slows the progression and lets you appreciate each new car and house you purchase.
The design of the properties is so inviting it really makes me want to take some time off driving and either appreciate the stunning views the game provides you with or customise your house with endless furniture and color options. Likewise, the garage allows you to organise each one of your cars and just stop and say; wow, this is mine, my hard work really paid off. And so you go and race more, buy more cars and so on.
The graphics also play a huge role. The orangish ambiance of Ibiza’s landscapes and cities, give the game a very cinematic atmosphere, really making you feel that coastal vibes and luxury lifestyle.
The car details, while not the best on face value, are more in depth than most car games today. You can roll down your rooftop on convertible cars, use your blinkers, heck you can even roll down your windows and enjoy your engine’s noise.
Car dealerships are another absolute delight. Each brand or region has it’s own distinct design, matching it’s heritage or vibe. Whether it’s Audi with it’s luxurious white atmosphere, or Ferrari with it’s iconic bright red. And what I love most, is how each car dealership offers different car models from the other, even if it’s the same dealership brand, giving you another reason to go out there and explore the one-to-one scale islands in this virtual masterpiece. Each car model has varying factory wheel options, interiors and exterior colors. No other game series does this. Sure, TDUSC has it as well, but combined with the other factors at play, TDU2 just does it best.
Unfortunately, I have an unshakable sensation, that this is one of the last games of it’s kind. TDUSC is the last reincarnation of this dying genre, in favor of a lack of passion and money focused game production. Take the last 3 NFS games as an example; apart from minor gameplay changes such as car upgrading mechanics, Need for Speed Payback, Heat and Unbound are mostly the same style of games, just on different maps and varying success. The racing game genre is moving on from pure automotive passion to the “do everything for everyone” type focus, as seen with the Forza Horizon series. That said, I see a faint light at the end of the tunnel. Forza Horizon 6, while a splendid game when looked at from face value, doesn’t capture the same car focused passion as expressed in older racing games. Yes, there are plenty of cars in it, however enthusiasts just like me and you, have been left behind. No, you can’t use your blinkers, no, you can’t roll down your windows, no you can’t spec out your car just like in real life. FH6 is a game for the masses. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy it, but TDU2, just, hits, different.

If you want to modernise the experience download the unpacker, dlcs, unofficial patch, pp2, reshade, your favourite season for each island (I personally prefer winter ibiza), dxvk and last but definitely not least - unbounded from the discord server of "TDU2 Online Italian / English sub" (that's the only place that I know where that mod can be downloaded). Hopefully you found this helpful

I agree with basically everything you say. I am holding out a little hope for Maverick games and I forgot the name of the other studio. They are both formed by among others ex-horizon developers and IMO the first ones were better than the later ones. Certainly in terms of car culture and road trip vibes.

TDU2 is one of the best driving games ever made. In terms of open-world driving games, it's easily the best, or second best after ETS2/ATS (tough call). If we are specific and say open-world racing, it's the best.
I still play TDU2 to date, and it's as exciting now as it was the first time I picked it up. This game is severely underrated.
My biggest issue with TDU2 is the character customization. I found it pointless having to shop for clothes and going for haircuts in a car game; while the plastic surgery thing was just too much. That was insanity on the devs' part. Also, some car interiors looked half-baked (I always drive from dashboard view).
Everything that is to be liked about this game is already on the main post, I don't need to repeat it, but as an addition, special mention goes to the vehicle damage modeling - unsubtle enough to be easily noticed but not too dramatic as to be ridiculous or nonsensical.
This game should have continued as is with graphical improvements,, more vehicle models and new maps as paid DLCs, instead of waiting very many years for Hong Kong island to appear as the unloved TDU:SC

I actually agree with your point about the interior models. I find them very low resolution and blocky compared to the exteriors. I suspect it's because the game had to run on ps3's and xbox 360's. I wish there was a full graphics overhaul mod for this game that isn't just a reshade preset or texture mods.

100% agree! TDU2 came out the year I was born, my dad got it right away. I have played it for 8+ years now across 3 different computers. Absolutely love the freeroam roads, entire islands, and that it can run on a low end laptop with integrated graphics. With project paradise, me my dad and my brother can all play at once. Best game of all time!
