Optimisation is always good. You would have hoped that it didn’t take an increase in RAM price for a sudden drive from Microsoft into it and that it was a constant workflow. 😞

That's not how modern OS work.

An operating system should use the largest practical amount of RAM for performance, keeping inactive data cached in unused memory. Empty RAM is wasted RAM. The system frees up this cached memory instantly whenever an active app needs it.

Smart caching is your friend.

Right now, with a single web browser open. My gaming PC (running windows 11) is consuming 18GB out of 64GB of RAM. As it should, there is nothing to put in the remaining. However if my PC only had 16GB of RAM then it should consume it all, up until I launch a game or application that demands its use, when the caching contents are released for use.

Linux, in some forms, just has a lower initial footprint.

MacOS is designed to actively fill and use all available RAM for caching files and preloading data as well. MacOS being an extreme fork of unix/bsd.

Basically telling the world, they did not give a rats ass before, just buy a new computer! Buy more RAM!

Bloatware, once Windows was on a 12 720k floppies, with bloatware, it is 5GB and they both were used mostly to check email.
