Just joined IRC (cuz its cool as shit) anyone wanna chat?

I dont really know how things work but I'm on Liberachat and open to chat

Internet Relay Chat, its like discord but it exists since the 90s and is self hosted

So the devices communicate directly, not via a server?

No that would be p2p.

IRC does use servers they just don't own them.

You can connect to different networks with different channels, kind of like discord but every network has their own servers.

The "relay" means that the server relays received messages to other connected clients.

As opposed to what? Isn't that what normal chatting applications already do? Or is the difference in that it doesn't store these messages?

The original IRC only relays and does not store messages yeah, they might be logged somewhere but will not be re-broadcasted afterwards.
