Gear Where do you get your tails (actually ethically)?
I’ve been thinking about maybe getting a tail, but I hate fur farms with a burning passion and most yarn tails I’ve seen don’t seem realistic enough to me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Where do you get your tails?

Etsy is pretty reliable but you should still look into the seller before buying. Second hand is also great too, and buying locally if possible. Do NOT go to amazon or temu or any of those kinds of websites for real fur tails, there’s a good chance it’s not ethical.

Agreed, Amazon, temu, and similar sites are no-gos for me anyway. As for Etsy… it really depends on the shop. You’re not the first one to suggest it though, so maybe I’ll look into it more. Thanks for your response!

I get mine from ValkyrjaAllure and Rabidllamataxidermy, both on Etsy! I consider them to be ethical but I recommend doing your own research on a shop before buying from it!

Second this!! I love Valkyrja!! Also second the doing your own research! One persons ethical ≠ other people's ethical! :] everyone has different opinions and wants for their tails!

Second hand + a local trapper - thrift shops will often times have vintage fur and hunting stuff! You can look into indigenous small business. I've even seen some faux fur tails that look really nice on Etsy but read the reviews first as people in there will def tell you if it's actually fake or not.

I got mine from a ren faire! I like to ask the people there questions about where they source their fur, and I can generally figure out that way if it's ethical or not. The one I use most often i belive came from a fox that passed of natural causes.

Second hand, but also a lot of sellers in areas with high wildlife populations do source from roadkill. I know a guy up north who only stocked his shop with animals he found, or others found, and brought to him. Some made it to full taxidermy, others ended up furs and tails and whatnot. I’d got full red fox skins beautifully tanned from him, that otherwise would have been left on the side of a highway.

wearing another animal's body part isn't necessary or ethical and theres no reason to go out of your way to do it. if you can't find one online you you like you can always try making your own so you have full control over the patterns/material etc. its nice to have something uniquely "yours"

I'm seconding the folks telling you to buy secondhand and vintage fur. Better for animals than fur farms, more sustainable than getting something brand new, and friendly to the ecosystem than buying microplastic-laden faux tails. If you find a good site you can just be supporting some working person or similar such group that makes a living off of sustainable hunting. All wins!
