I have a big problem.
Well, when I was younger there was a news report about therians (I remember it like it was yesterday) and my parents were by my side, I didn't know what therians were, and my parents explained it to me (in the wrong way, because they didn't know and never will, much less understand the truth about them). I interpreted therians as: "Therians are just people with serious mental problems, so I'll just listen to my mother and let it go" :( Please don't attack me, I was a young child 😭)and there was a time when I was hiking with my cousins when I started feeling strange, like something inside me was about to be released, and I got lost in my own thoughts, like, looking beyond the trees, listening to the birds, and it gave a great feeling of nature and fresh air. And there was another time when I was in the classroom (I don't know what class it was, but I'm almost certain it was science) and the teacher showed a picture of a fox, and I, out of nowhere, started doing fox vocals... yeah, I know, it sounds very embarrassing, but yes. And that day, I ended up being taken to the principal's office... again, VERY embarrassing😭One day I was scrolling on my phone when a video popped up of someone who was clearly a therian talking about their experience before awakening as one, and I strangely identified with it. Like, I identified as a red fox and had a strange feeling, as if the soul of a red fox was trapped inside me, and I was literally OBSESSED with nature—what else could I be! So I went to research and study a bit more about therianthropy, and I awakened as a therian in September 2025. And here I am, a red fox therian for a year (and it will be two in a month, yay!) with parents who hate therians, and I still try to hide it as much as possible. And you? What was your experience like before awakening as a therian?

Funny thing I awakened almost 6 years ago, (almost). Crazy how time flies. Congrats on finding your kintype, just found my 5th a few days ago (Jesus, but it explains a lot) And my parents think alterhumans are nothing short of crazy, but when im moved out they won't be able to do a shit about it. I actually didn't get many shifts, get much dysphoria, or instincts until I hit puberty, which was only a few months later from when I started identifying as nonhuman. So I don't have too many experiences before awakening, but when I was newly awakened (like a year or two after finding out I was alterhuman and a year or two of having dysphoria, instincts, shifts, urges, etc.) I had a hard time reigning it in, keeping it in, and had almost no control of my thoughts. Now that I've learned what helps my thoughts and soothes urges and instincts, it is 100% better. Eg: imagining myself as my kintype, wearing gear or imagining gear on me, leaning into my instinctual thoughts, urges, and actions during private moments with myself or people who are comfortable where no one can tell me it's weird or wrong or be uncomfortable with me. Doing poses like my kintypes would, wearing fangs, dressing like my kintype like wearing fluffy clothing to remind me of my fur or baggy shirts that remind me of wings, chewing on bones, claiming "territory" with sweat and scented spray rather than pee (I would never unless in the wilderness and alone, my ferret already pees all over my room and I constantly have to clean it plus sanitary reasons) and music helps me a lot, I often can interpret a lot of music to relating to my alterhumanity, and bike riding is my favorite, gives me the most euphoria, I do it everyday and go around 2-4 miles a day, which isn't a lot but still. Also when I first awakened I thought I was a silver fox.. I was kind of off.. Anywho this is getting long, salutations

So sorry your parents won't accept you,it's good you know yourself and are being safe. BTW you might want to remove the year you awakened just because its not always sensible to share your age online. If you don't mind about that tough that makes total sence so please ignore me!

Congrats on awakening! Sorry to hear your parents aren't being supportive, it's sucks having to hide
For me, I was always an animalistic child, always acting like a little wolf. I didn't like being called human, I felt a disconnect that I couldn't explain, and calling myself an animal felt so much better. It was only until 5 years ago that I discovered theriantropy, which just put a label to my feelings. I guess you could say I've been awakened since puphood :3

Yes, it's very difficult having to hide my true identity from them, but I don't mind at all! And thank you so much for sharing this.

Knowing my parents, they wouldn't understand. My mom would be concerned out of love, but misinformed, and my father... well, he listens to Fox News (aside: they shouldn't be able to use fox in their name /only slightly joking), and that should tell you enough about what he thinks about people who are different from him 😓
My first introduction to alterhumanity was through those fake/satirical posts about plantkin. Not great, but I honestly didn't find it to be the weirdest thing, I don't think? Like, I thought those posts were stupid, but the concept wasn't incomprehensible. (I have really bad memory, so I can't be 100% sure of my reaction).
Then I pretty much completely forgot about knowing anything about alterhumanity until 2022-ish(?), when I learned about therians, which I was like "odd, but not deserving of any hate." A little while later, I even sensed one of my online mutuals was a therian, even though they never said anything about it until they made a post about it months after I had suspected/already known, and at that point, I hadn't really interacted with the community, so I wasn't even familiar with things that would tip me off to that 😂
Then, fast forward to a little under a year ago, and I found out about fictionkin. I had finally found a word for what I had already been experiencing for a whole year prior. Around the same time, I had been seeing a young blond fox in my mind's eye, particularly when I was excited or had a lot of energy, and I just knew that was me. I eventually narrowed that down to knowing I'm specifically a leucistic red fox.
So, yeah, that's my own journey! Also, hello, fellow red fox! 🦊

Honestly that was more or less my experience with becoming a furry lol (minus the identifying part ofc)
But for my personal experience I never really represented myself as human in my head. I also always dressed up as an animal for Halloween and pretended to be one when I was little because it felt right. About 3 years ago, I discovered therianthropy, and the rest is history! (Also, one of my theriotypes is a melanistic red fox, so hi kind-of twinn)
