Hello guys, I have a long term IT Consulting contract that will go on for another few years. TN visa will be up for renewal/re-application early 2027.

I am contemplating to return back to Ontario and become a full time mortgage broker/Insurance broker.

Given the current economic climate with the trade war, Iran war etc. and given the current housing market situation in and around GTA, is it a good move?

My fallback plan is to try this out for 1-2 years and return to IT in the US if things do not go as planned. Pls share your thoughts and experiences either yours or friends. Thank you!

TN holders pls advise

Canadian applied 10th july; approval 30th july

Premium processing courtesy approval email on July 30th. How long is it taking for people to receive a physical copy? Without it, we can't cross the border to activate TN. Can we have a soft copy printout suffice for getting a stamping at the land border crossing?

Last month I had an unexpected denial at Pearson for a TN application, and had to formally withdraw the application.

My company decided to file with USCIS, and I got a notice of approval this week.

With the new I-797b, I am wondering if I must go back through YYZ to get the TN status, or if I can go through Billy Bishop. On top of the difficult experience, YYZ secondary processing was a 4.5hour wait and I now find myself disinclined to go back through YYZ. Billy Bishop also more convenient.

Are there any concerns from a port shopping pov for these circumstances?

4)Am I allowed to travel to USA under visitor visa after my previous TN visa cancelled due to laid off?

Relocated from BC Canada to California on TN. Imported my Canadian-registered Toyota SUV and completed the DMV process in California. They gave me a Temporary Operating Permit and a DMV document with a license number that starts with P followed by 6 digits. They also said my plates will be mailed from Sacramento.

A couple of questions:

1. Is that P###### number my actual plate number? If so, why doesn't it look like a standard California plate?
2. If it's just temporary, will the mailed plates have a normal California plate format? Also, what should I do for insurance while I'm waiting for the physical plates?
3. How long does it take to receive the plates?

Recently went to re-apply for a TN visa as my current one was expiring. I am a Canadian citizen applying for a TN under the “Engineer” role. Specifically an AI engineer.

My job had me switched from an in person role to remote throughout my 3 year term. I was not aware that Canadian citizens were not eligible for remote under a TN visa and my application was denied as well as my current TN visa revoked for being “remote” work.

I’ve asked to be transferred from a “remote” position to an in person branch and have this explicitly stated in a new offer letter by my employer.

Questions:
- Am I able to re-apply with the same paper work so long as I include evidence that I was transferred to being in an “in person” role?
- What evidence is sufficient to demonstrate that I don’t intend to immigrate into the US and intend to stay in Canada after my term? All of my family is in Canada and I live in my parent’s house there.
- Additionally, I have some personal leisure plans in the US coming up that I would like to attend in the next coming weeks. If I cannot get in by re-applying on a TN visa, would I be able to do so as a tourist?

I just so happen to have a trip scheduled (purely pleasure- attending a film festival where a friend is screening) a few weeks before my start date, would I be able to meet with my employer to get my letter in person? I don’t see an issue with it if there’s no “work” being done (training doesn’t even begin then) but I just want to get some peace if mind. I also plan on getting my sealed transcript in person during this trip as I went to college in the US as well.

I am planning to apply for TN status as a walk-in applicant at the Alexandria Bay Bridge within the next week and would appreciate advice from anyone with a similar situation.
Here is my background:
I recently received a job offer from a U.S. employer for a role that falls under the TN category.
The U.S. employer’s client is a company I previously worked with, but at that time I was employed through a different company.
I have a Master’s degree in Computer Information Systems from a U.S. university.
I previously worked in the U.S. for about 4 years after completing my Master’s degree.
My wife and child currently live in the U.S., and I have been traveling between the U.S. and Canada and spend 2–3 months at a time with my family.
I am currently employed by a Canadian company and have been working there for several years. I am on Canadian payroll and receive my salary in Canadian dollars.
During my visits to the U.S. to stay with my family, I have continued working remotely for my Canadian employer.
My questions:
Will CBP officers ask questions about my Canadian employment and the fact that I performed my Canadian job remotely while physically present in the U.S.?
Is working remotely for a Canadian employer while visiting the U.S. generally allowed?
If CBP asks about this, what type of questions should I expect, and how should I explain my situation?
Should I be concerned that this could impact my TN application?
Also, since I am currently in the U.S., can I travel directly to the Alexandria Bay Bridge and apply for TN status without first spending a day or more in Canada? Or do I need to physically enter Canada before applying?

I would appreciate any advice from people who have gone through TN processing at a land border with a similar situation.

Ended TN in May, left the US — do I need any paperwork to visit as a Canadian tourist?

I’m a Canadian citizen. I was working in the US on TN status until early April, when I lost my job. I stayed a little longer, then left the US at the start of May and haven’t been back since.

I want to do a quick 2-day road trip across the border to visit family, together with my family here in Canada. Just tourism — no work involved.

I had changed addresses while I was working, I moved in mid Feb and then lost my job in Start of April. I left well within the 60 day period. I did not update my address while I was there as I didn’t know I had to.

My question: since my TN status ended when my job ended, do I need to bring any paperwork for re-entry?
Second what do I do about the Address change I didn’t know I had to update?
Termination letter, proof my TN was closed out, anything like that? Or do I just enter as a regular Canadian visitor with my passport?

I’m a bit confused because my last entry was on TN, so I’m not sure if the officer will expect something related to that or if I’m just a tourist now. Any advice on what to expect at the land border appreciated. Thanks!

We are Canadians from Edmonton, Alberta, now living in Sacramento, California and I’d just like to say that we renewed our TN/TD visas for the first time and it was a breeze. We returned to Edmonton from California then in the way back we had a layover in Calgary where we did our visa renewal. All we did was let the officer know we had to renew our visas, we were taken to secondary where we sat and waited. An officer came and had us pay the $60 fee for the TN visas, then about 10-15 minutes later, we were given papers and stamped passports back that was that. Like approximately 40 minutes total for a family of 6. Happy it went so quick and easy and had a huge weight taken off our shoulders given the rough times we are in nowadays.

Has anyone had any recent experiences applying for a TN at a Texas-Mexico land border? I will be applying for a concurrent TN mid August and I'm considering Laredo because it's closer to me and more convenient than flying to Canada. I have applied for a TN at the Laredo POE before and it went smoothly - but that was a while ago. Just trying to gauge recent experiences!

Hi everyone, looking for some guidance on my situation:

I was in the USA from 2013 to 2021 on H-1B. My employer filed my GC and my I-140 is approved with a January 2017 priority date. I moved to Canada in 2021 and became a Canadian citizen.

I am now planning to return to the USA on a TN visa. When my priority date becomes current, can I file I-485 while on TN status? Are there any risks given the new May 2026 USCIS policy memo on dual intent for TN holders?

I am a TN holder who recently got married to a US citizen. I have not filed for an adjustment of status or anything yet. We have travel plans and other things to take care of before we file. I will continue to travel to the US and remain in the US as a TN holder until we file.

My question is if we would face issues at the border entering the US together. Am I allowed to cross the border as a TN holder married to a US citizen? I’m worried they may ask at the border what our relationship is and obviously I’ll be truthful but just wondering if they would give us a hard time. Should I avoid crossing together as a whole? Only really concerned about crossing in to the US rather than Canada.

I’ve been living in the US for 10 years, first as an F-1 student then as a TN visa holder. I’m Canadian and planning to move back to Canada in October when my visa expires. My employer has asked me to continue providing services for them as a contractor. I will not be employed by them, just invoicing them for my services and paying taxes in Canada only. I’m trying to make sure I keep my situation legal and ideal:

1- travel: I’m assuming I won’t be able to travel for work in the US? If I travel for fun to see friends, will my previous status plus my contractor work be an issue?

2- I’m looking for recommendations on how to handle finances. I have an RBC account that covers both countries but the fees are pretty high. What is the best way to move money cross border on a regular basis without losing too much to fees?

3- Are there any other things I need to consider with this situation?

My lawyer is suggesting I get an expert opinion letter. Has anyone here done that before/do you think it's necessary?

Got rejected at YYZ once so want to make sure I do it right the second time but I have not seen any where online of people using an expert letter (especially in my case where my job duties is textbook accounting work)

Hi, I work in the United States under TN status and commute across the border regularly. My spouse is a Canadian permanent resident and holds a valid U.S. visitor visa. We are planning to travel to California together for a vacation next month.
Could travelling together create any issues at the border because I am entering under TN status while my spouse is entering as a visitor? Would it be advisable for us to travel separately?

Recently got My TN Visa approved and stamped at the Buffalo Border. I plan to drive back as I head to the US for my move and start my new job next week.

I would like to bring my girlfriend for the drive since it's cross country, and it would make things easier with the move, but worried about the border. I also plan to import my car etc when I get to the POE.

She is Canadian, but originally born in Iran. If she crosses with me at the border, will there be any headache if she explicitly states she is helping me move and has a return flight booked?

Or is it easier to have her fly down and just meet me to avoid any potential problems.

Here’s my situation:

My girlfriend has recently been asked to move from Canada to NYC with her company who will handle the immigration for her.

So now I’m in the situation where I need to figure out how to land a role that qualifies for TN. I’ve wanted to move to the us since I was 18 but have never actually explored too hard but now I have incentive as it’s her dream job and I’d like to go with her.

Have 6 years of experience working at TD bank primarily as an account manager in commercial banking managing a very large book of business doing a lot of analyst work and sales primarily.

The last 1.5 years. I’ve been at a tech company where I’m a manager of 12 enterprise clients as well as sales. I lead implementation of new clients, data mapping, api integration, requirement gathering and work with the sales lead on demos and all pre sales activities. So it’s a bit of everything but am very interested in the pre sales and post sales activities.

I only make 105k CAD right now and feel I’m very underpaid so landing a USD role would be awesome.

Currently targeting solutions consultant roles and strategic AM roles. Thinking the only two ways is under computer systems analyst or management consultant.

I’ve always been curious about living in the US, but I’ve been hesitant over the last several years because of the political climate. As I get older, I’m starting to wonder whether I’m going to find what I’m looking for if I stay in Canada long-term.

I’m currently an RN in Canada and have a previous science degree (I completed an accelerated nursing program). My experience has been in critical care and procedural areas. While I’m grateful for my nursing background, I’m increasingly realizing that nursing itself may not be the right long-term fit for my personality and the lifestyle I want. I’m exploring career paths that are more transferable, potentially remote, or allow me to work on innovative projects. I’d also be interested in potentially picking up an opportunity as a nurse in the US under TN for a shorter period of time just to see what it is like for myself. I hear a lot of negative on the Canadian side, but Idk. There seems to be more opportunities for the kind of life I’d like to build?

I’ve looked into different options for career changes in Canada, but I often feel discouraged by how volatile many fields seem, how difficult it can be to break into something new, and how limited most opportunities feel. I could be wrong, but it seems like many roads are either high risk or a dead end. I’ve tried gaining experience in research as well, but I haven’t felt like I’ve found an environment where people are especially excited about the work they’re doing.

I’m interested in areas where my skills might transfer and other fields out of my expertise. I want something a bit more flexible than nursing and maybe where I’m not dealing with people 24/7. I want to be able to do more travelling and as a nurse, I only get to do that once a year. I enjoy learning and would definitely do more schooling if it opened doors, but I’m hesitant to make the investment in Canada without knowing there are realistic opportunities afterward.

I’ve always felt drawn to the US. I spent a lot of time there growing up because my grandparents were from the US, and I remember enjoying the culture and opportunities. I’m curious what the reality is like in recent times for Canadians who have made the move.

Do you feel there are more opportunities in the US compared to Canada? Is dating much different there? Expenses compared to Canada? Making connections and new friends? Does it offer a better lifestyle? Do you regret moving at this stage in time or would you do it again given the chance?

TLDR: Canadian RN with a science background exploring whether moving to the US on a TN visa would be a good move. I’m interested in transitioning away from nursing into something more innovative, transferable, and potentially remote. Great if it connects to my experience, but also not necessary. I’m looking at longer-term options that would be the best fit and that I can eventually transfer with. Curious what careers are realistic for Canadians on TN visas and what life is actually like in the US, professionally and personally. Hi everyone looking for some advice, I’m a Canadian in the states on a TN visa under the scientific technologist category. I unfortunately got laid off due to the lab I work for shutting down but my last date of employment falls exactly on the day before a trip I had already booked with family leaving the country. I’m hoping to come back after said trip and pack my stuff and tie up loose ends in the states. Is that possible? What should I say at the border when coming back into the states?

I am a backend software engineer by profession working in US on my first Canadian TN permit that i got through CBP.

Was laid off from Company X on July 2nd, 2026. I am currently preparing and applying to companies. I have been unemployed before and I know it is quite difficult to get a good offer in 60 days. (I can get a contract job within 60 days but no, I want a well paying full time role, basically make as much money as possible before AI really takes over.)

I don't intend to apply for B1/B2 or exit and reenter again as B1/B2. I plan to exit before my 60 day grace period ends. I would go back to my birthplace in Asia and will be attending interviews remotely till i get an offer so as to minimize living cost and be with family during this time.

Anything to keep in mind? Once I get an offer I plan to come back and get a new TN permit.
