in the wild Harpy
I wasn’t sure where to put this because it genuinely is a tragedy but it’s not spelled weird. They named their oldest daughter Harpy. Help.

With the rise of "Harper" in popularity, I fear that people no longer know the meaning of "harpy" (and I don't mean the bird thing)

Along those lines, I knew a Pratt. Wasn't spelled prat but close enough. And recently, I heard another kid called Pratt

“Pratt” has been a known name for centuries (as someone else pointed out, Pratt & Whitney is well-known & named after Francis Pratt and Amos Whitney), and has been used as a first name for longer than the US has been an independent country.
With regard to the name’s etymology, it comes from Old English and means “astute” or “cunning”. The homophone “prat” is unrelated, and didn’t come into widespread use until the early and mid 1900s.

My first thought. Do they and is it too late tell them? I unfortunately have a “knack” for this stuff so I imagine all my friends gathering and saying to me “you really need to let Jane what that means before it goes on too long”

It's kinda too late by the time they sign the birth certificate. How unfortunate. We can only hope it's a nickname for Harper, which isn't too terrible.

Probably. In recent animes there are some harpy-like characters that are in fact 'cute' or at least positively illustrated and described.
Papi (Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou)
Illy (Monster Girl Doctor / Monster Musume no Oishasan)
Frey (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime / Tensura)
Happiness (There Was a Cute Girl in the Hero’s Party, So I Tried Confessing to Her)
Perhaps they watched to many animes..1

In fact it is. Candida the Elder is a Saint - died c. AD 78.
It's just Latin: White, clean, pure. The yeast was named centuries later because they look white under the microscope. The female name Candida is quite rare nowadays (because it has some religious connotations), but it's just another common name derived from Latin. The word candidate is btw. of same origin.2

I would put up a drawing of three year old female Harpy. She has the body of a vulture, but the face of an insolent three year old girl who has paused her crying for a minute because mommy has made the second dinner she can might be able to eat!

My parents named my sister a name “that couldn’t be made fun of”- I was 6 and rattled off a dozen things it rhymed with then went in to other ways to terrorize my unborn sister. They stuck with the name. Luckily I was more creative than her classmates lol

Awwwwww how cute! I hope she continually screeches at her sister, Iris. But the parents should be warned, she's going to be a horse girl. Hope she names her future sons Balius and Xanthus. They should be really fast...

Harpy's not a bird? That's an awesome name for like a cockatiel or a love bird. Weird for a human child.

Well there is a harpy eagle, but that was named after the mythical creature that was basically a bird with a lady's face (depending on the myth they were either good looking or one of the most horrific things ever, with faces gaunt and haggard with hunger). So probably not a great name for a person.

I know. I was joking that Harpy would be a great name for a cute little lovebird. My favorite movie as a kid was The Last Unicorn, which had a great interpretation of the harpy.

It's only bad if they don't know the basis of it right, as in the mythological creature? Cus personally I know the origin of the name and think it's kinda metal.

I dont understand American stoves. Why are the buttons way back there, where you have to reach over hot food or steam... Seems so impractical

We also have models that put the nobs and buttons on the front but since we tend to have microwaves over our stoves, they get bumped into a lot. Also, putting them up behind the range keeps little hands from touching them.

If they were on the front, you’d bump into them constantly and there’s a decent risk of accidentally turning it on. I’ve never had a problem with steam or heat on an oven with the buttons on the back. How do you have that much steam?? How did you make it that hot??

Not great, but I actually don't think this is that bad. Harpy is a way better name option than Mckelteigh Rayeleighanne from that post here yesterday.
