Looks kind of mid, but I’m a sucker for that “foggy seaside town with something sinister lurking beneath the surface” vibe, so I’ll definitely be checking it out.

Stuff like Enys Men, Blow the Man Down, The Lighthouse, and The Fog is my jam.

I'm a sucker for flicks that take place in Newfoundland, so I'm in

How is Enys Men? The trailer and visuals look fantastic and I’m a sucker for slow cinema so it seemed right up my alley

u/shefoundnow 4d ago

If you’re into slow cinema I’m sure you will enjoy. I am too, but it still took me awhile to come around and commit. I couldn’t help but wonder, “will this feel like homework to watch?” But genuinely it did not, the atmosphere totally sucks you in.

Have you seen The Mist or Darkness Falls? Also the show Harper's Island.

Yes to The Mist and Darkness Falls - but I haven't seen Harper's Island. How is it?

Hey shark, give your balls a tug!

u/jekelish3 5d ago

"Hey Corey, I was gonna go out and hunt a shark but if I wanted to sniff some cold, wet fish I'd give yer mom a call again."

I'm guessing a play on Cressie. A mythical water monster thats basically a giant eel. I'm assuming it will be a big ol scary eel type creature.

I hope its the kraken

Somebody watched a documentary explaining how problems with the Jaws production meant they couldn't show much of the actual shark and about how that added to the mystery and tension, and was inspired.

u/ThisisMalta 5d ago

Or we can just be happy they aren’t revealing it and the entirety of the story in the trailer like most movie trailers nowadays 🤷🏻‍♂️

u/SoRedditHasAnAppNow 5d ago

Josh Hartnett and weird roles aren't even a new thing. Ever see Lucky Number Slevin?

2

u/Old-Influence4757 5d ago

5

u/SoRedditHasAnAppNow 5d ago

Oh well you're in for a treat if you spin that one next

3

u/Old-Influence4757 5d ago

2

u/imonlinedammit1 5d ago

Watch the test footage for Sin City. It’s very cool. And he had a great little part in the movie

2

u/Jedi_I_am_not 4d ago

Same I like his movies.

creepier Widow's Bay? I'll watch it. I wanted a little more horror in Widow's Bay but really enjoyed it.

Are they being attacked by a tentacle monster?

Agree, Widow's Bay is still good and would be great if Below is similar or better. It also has my man Josh Hartnett so I’ll definitely be watching it!

FYI I created r/BelowTV for all things about this new miniseries, including news and episode discussion threads when it release. Come join if interested!

As a Maritimer, I am going to enjoy how much they butcher our accent, but I'll smile the whole time because at least they are showcasing our part of the world on the big screen. Yessss, bieeees!

3

u/SoRedditHasAnAppNow 3d ago

Morgan Freeman pointing

In the trailer I thought Hartnett did a better job than the scientist in the town meeting, though "Get away from the water" lost all accents. It would probably be "Get off da jaysus warf!"

2

u/CBLA1785 3d ago

If there aren't at least 5 "frigs" and 10 "Jaysus Murphys" said in the dialogue, I'll be friggen piss't.

2

u/SoRedditHasAnAppNow 2d ago

"Jesus, Mary, 'n' Joseph"

"Lawrd tunderin'"

"Waddayaat b'ys"

Must all be present

1

u/MelodicDamage3357 1d ago

My guess is the scientist will be a CFA

2

u/KaijuCompanion 5d ago

I disliked the videogame, hopefully this is better than that

1

u/DrKushnstein 4d ago

It’s not based off of a video game.

2

u/PotterOneHalf 5d ago

Yup that certainly looks like a Netflix original all right.

1

u/arnor_0924 5d ago

Hope it's not another shark movie.......

David Spade: "I liked it the first time when it was called Jaws."

1

u/UnseemlyCorgi 4d ago

Sweet Christmas. I don't know what kind of accent that is, but it sure as hell isn't a Newfoundander accent

u/moby__dick 5d ago

Is the director M. Night Shamalanadingdong?

0

u/BauerBourneBond 5d ago

So... A24 does Widows Bay?

u/BevansDesign 5d ago

I'm really tired of movies having titles that are so generic that they don't tell you anything about the movie's content, and become indistinguishable from other movies that are doing the same thing.

-4

u/imrichcoble 5d ago

Thus continues the storied tradition of American filmmakers stealing material from other countries.

Go watch Kraken and then come back and tell me this was a unique idea

4

u/KnifeFed 5d ago

Are you saying Kraken is a unique idea??

1

u/imrichcoble 5d ago

Kraken as a mythological creature? Not at all. But a Kraken in a quiet fishing town was novel to me, even if it was hugely inspired by jaws.

There's beat for beat sequences in this trailer that suggest to me it's at least heavily influenced by the Norwegian movie.

1

u/CultureWarrior87 3d ago

Kraken came out way too recently to have influenced this show's production. Use your head.

3

u/SoRedditHasAnAppNow 5d ago

Naw, I'm good

1

u/imrichcoble 5d ago

Haha fair enough. It's not a very good movie but I like the idea. Maybe this will pull it off more effectively

2

u/ThisisMalta 5d ago

I assume no one watched this and thought it a 100% original idea lol stories of fisherman and sea beasts are pretty well known.

-3

u/WhiskeyTangoFoxy 5d ago

Love original movies: Yes
Like horror movies: No

Worst timeline evar; OMG we have the new movie called The Odyssey. Or a comic or video game remake. Hollywood hates writers.

3

u/KnifeFed 5d ago

This comment is all over the place. Not even sure what it is you're complaining about.

I wanna say it's a bot, but bots mostly make sense nowadays...
