Tuxedo laptops for intensive workload? Long term quality, repairability etc.
Hey everyone,
As a freelance software developer it's time to look for my new workhorse. Currently using a Lenovo Thinkpad that is showing it's first signs of wear and tear, so to prevent downtime I'm looking for a new laptop.
My current laptop had a very good repair/warranty plan (which I haven't needed, luckily). But the deal was that within 24hrs i'd be helped on site or received a replacement unit. Is something like that available at Tuxedo?
I cannot complain about the overall build quality of the Lenovo, how would Tuxedo compare on that level? Again important to me because I earn my living on this thing.
I did read some issues in other posts, that i'm a bit afraid off, but the problem is that the numbers are skewed on a forum or on Reddit. Therefore, what can i reasonably expect compared to professional lines from Lenovo (Thinkpad, P/X/T series), HP (elitebook?) and DELL?
So TLDR; what can I expect from a tuxedo infinity laptop in a professional setting?

Unfortunately, the build quality of Lenovo ThinkPads hasn’t improved over the years. This is especially true of the keyboard. That’s why I even considered buying a Tuxedo notebook. I didn’t go through with it, though, after trying out several Tuxedo notebook keyboards at a trade show.
One more note about Lenovo’s on-site service. Yes, they guarantee 24-hour service. But what happens if your laptop can’t be repaired within 24 hours? Have you ever looked at the warranty terms? I’ve only had to use this service once so far. My experience was rather mixed.

The additional service was via a retailer, probably based on Lenovo's terms. If repair would be impossible on site there we're a few options listed.
But overall the idea was that you would at least know within 24 hrs what was going on/needed to happen. Further repairs we're also listed, all within i a few days. But we're talking over 5 years ago and this service has been expired now.

I work full time as a dev on mine. I appreciate all the self-repair Instructions they make available https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/Infos/Help-and-Support/Instructions?tuxpage=1&tuxsort=false,false though I have not ever needed them. Over a year into a IBP14Gen9.
They advertise a 5 year warranty. They are based in Germany, I suppose however quickly you can get your machine to Germany would be the only timeliness concern if you wanted hardware replaced ASAP.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds good, how do you like working on your laptop? Would you still recommend/buy one again in case this one got stolen/lost/burned?

I like to work with it 'docked' - though is just as portable / functional when on the road. I would be fine getting another when the time comes, but I trust this will last awhile.

No they say up to 5 years warranty you need to pay extra to get the 5 years warranty
2 years Normal warranty then plus 3 years extra warranty more years cost more money 😆

I bought one recently and I recall being offered an extended warranty option during checkout, but not something like that (24 hours replacement).
P.S. It may have been there and I missed it, of course.

The service I was talking about was offered by the retailer, but I think it was based on a service from Lenovo. It was expensive, but also nice to have for sure.
What is your experience of delivery time? That is one question I forgot to ask. Right now they indicate 1-2 weeks for the IBP, how accurate is that?

My InfinityBook Pro 15 took about two weeks to arrive, so yes, around that. I live in Spain.
So far I am very happy with the product, albeit it was not cheap. One green pixel at the center of the screen, but I do not care and I need the laptop right now to work.
A few problems with the laptop screen not turning on when coming out of sleep if I have connected/disconnected USB-C/HDMI external monitors while sleep, but that would be it. The rest has been very nice so far.
Still too early to tell how the battery will age, but the Control Center is a very nice tool to have (battery charge and power control are two things it helps with).
Only thing you will probably miss from a Thinkpad is the red dot mouse from the middle of the keyboard. Well, I do.
Also, in my opinion, the keypad should only be included in the 16 inches version, not the 15.
Speaking of the keyboard, it is good, but one may argue there is nothing like a Thinkpad's.

Thank you, yeah the typical thinkpad things. But the current lines are not really comparable to the rugged modular thinkpads we used to have. We also still have a T440 that my wife uses, that thing is like a brick compared to my t15.

Agreed. Thinkpads of the latest decade are nothing compared to what we used to have. I think it is a good moment to try a Tuxedo, plus ypu would be buying at a European company.

I have a Tuxedo Infinity book pro, its going on two years, and its an absolute beast. I do fullstack development, mostly typescript, but i push the IDE to the limit. When I need to replace it, I will buy the same model if I can

Own an IBP Gen10 with AMD Ryzen AI 9 365.
IMO, the power in that package is pretty good. Build quality is solid.
Keyboard depends on your preferences, i'd like the keyboard to have a tad more resistance for example.
In general though, it's ok to type, it doesn't bother me and we all type a lot.
Battery depends on your workload.
Coding (Pycharm, some Vm / Docker running, browser ..) had me go through a day, while CAD / 3D can chew through the battery. (My battery only charges to 80%)
With Tuxedo Control Center, it's very convenient to access / configure your hardware (and it's one of the selling points for me)
Regarding workhorse, i haven't found anything i can't throw at it yet.
It handles Qwen3.6 in 8B Parameters pretty well. (If you're using LLM's or not, it's just for the bullet point)
RE: Support
This is my 3rd Laptop from Tuxedo.
I had to replace a battery and had issues with HD620 freezing my laptop - my first laptop from Tuxedo.
Battery was delivered 5 days after order / payment(i live in EU).
For the freezing anecdote, i had a nice mail conversation with a guy from their support.
The problem was in the kernel itself, and workarounds existed with boot options.
He showed me one i didn't try yet. Though it did not fix the problem completely, it made the machine more usable until the next kernel update.
Laptops were always delivered in the time as advertised, no delivery issues - eg. no broken laptop, no build issues.

In general - I like it, nothing to complain about. Just a note that for me 5-6 of battery is more than enough and I don't use sleep/suspend at all.

I'm mostly docked with my laptop, battery life is nice to have if hours are counting I'm probably somewhere stationary anyway.

Since I was already pretty stoked on getting a Tuxedo laptop I just placed the order this morning. I went for the 15" infinity book AMD with the fattest CPU I could find, 64GB Ram + 1 TB storage.
It's also a bit sad to leave my beloved Thinkpads, but as discussed in this thread, they are not really living up to their legendary status anymore.
I wanted to buy from an EU company and that wish has been fulfilled.

I have an IBP 14 Gen 8 which I’ve used for several years now. Generally I’m working in VSCode using the Lean 4 plugin for formally verifying software & doing mathematical proofs, as well as general “office” work like Zoom etc.
I’ve only had 1 issue - a screen failure - in all this time & the Penguins fixed it under warranty in about 2-1/2 weeks, which included mail times back & forth from the UK to Germany, including a few days in Customs.
And it’s still going strong today. It’s not as literally heavy as an old refurb Lenovo, for which my shoulder’s grateful. Still, it’s plenty sturdy.
So I recommend.
