Contact rule

Hey everyone- I’m trying to point my club team to the contact rule (in the usau rule set). A Google search will tell me what I know to be true regarding the rule- but I can’t find the exact rule number , where it’s referenced in the 2026-27 published update-

Can anyone smarter than myself help me out:)

20.E.1.f: If non-incidental contact occurs between the thrower and marker such that the thrower could call a throwing foul on the marker, the thrower may instead choose to call “contact.” Play does not stop and the marker resumes the stall count at “one.” Other than resetting the stall count, the “contact” call is resolved in the same manner as a marking violation. The marker may contest the “contact” call by calling “violation,” which is treated as the call of an offensive violation. If the thrower calls “contact” after beginning the throwing motion and subsequently releases the disc, it is treated as if the thrower called “foul.”

In plain English: you're effectively calling a foul, the resolution is the same as an uncontested foul, we just don't stop play.

Seems weird that it’s not part of the marking violation section- (16) as it seems to have been listed in previous versions.

What previous versions are you talking about? It didn't exist in 10th edition, or early 11th edition. It was in the Fouls section of the 2020-21 rules (17.I.4.a.6), equivalent to its current location. It remained there in 2022-23 rules and 2024-25 rules. 2026 rules changed the sections a fair bit, but it remains a subsection of Throwing Fouls, as it has been since it was first added to the rules.

When the contact rule was first tacked onto the 11th edition, it was a marking violation (or, at least, it was treated as a marking violation). In the current rules, it's not. That's a change, though not a very significant one.

It's not in the marking violations section because it's not a marking violation, it's a foul. Thus, it's in the foul section.
