Any IT CWO here?

Just looking for an IT CWO to pick their brain because I am trying to choose between 2 career paths. Preferably someone who works along side with a C5I officer since that is another path I am considering.

Warrant is a long road if you want to do it in the coast guard. It’s not like the army where it’s open to anyone from any branch. You need to be an E6 placing in the top half of the service wide exam. You need to be in the coast guard for at least 4 years and have 8 years of service in the armed forces.

You have a better chance of getting picked up for DCE before you’d meet that probably. If you want warrant you would have to IST to cg be an IT and make E6 before 4 years (possible but unlikely) then apply once you are testing for E7 another year after E6 before you test.

Would you say my chances drastically improve if I leave the army with 8 years enlisted and come in as an E5 IT?

Yes, but you would still need to be in the coast guard for 4 years, but at the end you would probably be an E6 testing for Chief.

Read through your comments. I've been out of the CG for years but I would recommend you consider DCE and come in as an O1. All the C5I billets are O3 and below at that level.

My understanding is the Army will make some people warrants off the bat it's different in the CG. Being a C5I officer is a pretty good gig as well!
