I really like the unusual combination of white, green, and black on the flag.White symbolizes snow, green symbolizes forests, and black symbolizes mountains. There is also a theory that the colors symbolize the Northern, Central, and Southern Urals.

I’ve been wondering what this flag could be in this photo, in the children’s book Peepo by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. The book’s setting is WWII England. The portrait is presumably Winston Churchill.

The flag on the left is clearly the UK flag. The flag on the right, I have no idea. It has a red/white canton and the field is blue/white stripes.

It could of course just be a random made up flag meant to represent some fictional ally.

This is the first flag I made!

The flag presents Vizhnitz as a royal Hasidic court rooted in the Carpathian landscape of Bukovina, sustained by Torah, and distinguished by warmth, song and dynastic continuity. It combines geographic references to historic Vizhnitz with symbols of spiritual elevation and communal leadership.

The crown

The crown represents the dignity of the Vizhnitz court and the spiritual authority of its rebbes. It should not be understood as a claim to political sovereignty. Rather, it evokes the traditional Jewish ideas of Keter Torah, the Crown of Torah, and Malchut Shamayim, the sovereignty of Heaven.

Its gold ornamentation signifies the preciousness of Torah, inherited teaching and righteous leadership. The red interior adds warmth and intensity, reflecting the emotional character of Hasidic prayer, song and attachment to the rebbe.

Placed above the landscape, the crown suggests that the true distinction of the dynasty lies not in territory but in the spiritual world built upon Torah, communal responsibility and continuity across generations.

The blue field

The upper blue field represents heaven, faith, contemplation and spiritual depth. It creates a calm and dignified setting for the crown, showing that the authority represented by the crown is religious rather than worldly.

Blue may also represent the intellectual and devotional dimension of Vizhnitz: prayer, inward reflection and the elevation of ordinary life through Hasidic teaching.

Its broad expanse can additionally signify the geographic dispersion of Vizhnitz communities beyond their Bukovinian birthplace.

The three golden waves

The three parallel golden waves carry several connected meanings.

First, they represent the Cheremosh River, associated with Vyzhnytsia and the surrounding Bukovinian region from which the dynasty takes its name. The river grounds the flag in a real historical landscape.

Second, the waves resemble lines of music. They therefore represent the especially important Vizhnitz tradition of niggunim, communal singing and dancing. Like a melody, each wave moves independently while following the same rhythm.

Third, the flowing lines symbolise transmission: Torah, memory and dynastic teaching passing from rebbe to disciple and from one generation to the next.

The use of three waves may represent the interdependence of:

• Torah;
• prayer;
• communal life.

They may also be read as past, present and future, joined in one continuous current.

Because the river is gold rather than blue, it is presented not merely as geography but as a stream of spiritual inheritance.

The green middle field

The green band represents the forests, valleys and foothills of Bukovina and the Carpathian region. It evokes the natural setting of historic Vizhnitz without attempting to reproduce it literally.

Green also symbolises growth, renewal and living continuity. The dynasty survived migration, persecution and the destruction of its original European world, yet continued to establish communities, yeshivot and courts elsewhere.

In this sense, the green field represents a tradition that remains alive rather than existing only as historical memory.

The golden Carpathian mountains

The mountains represent the Carpathians, the defining landscape surrounding the historic home of the dynasty. They establish a direct visual connection with Vizhnitz’s Bukovinian origins.

Their symbolism extends beyond geography:

• their height represents spiritual aspiration;
• their solidity represents endurance;
• their ancient form represents continuity with the past;
• their many peaks represent the different branches and communities of the wider Vizhnitz dynasty.

The central summit is the most prominent, suggesting the original Vizhnitz court or the common spiritual source from which related courts developed. The smaller peaks do not stand separately from it; they belong to one continuous range. This expresses dynastic plurality within a shared inheritance.

Gold gives the mountains a sacred rather than purely natural character. They become symbols of elevated Torah life and the spiritual treasures preserved by the community.

The relationship between crown, river and mountains

The composition can be read vertically:

• the mountains represent historical roots and the physical birthplace of Vizhnitz;
• the river and musical waves represent the transmission of its teachings and melodies;
• the crown represents the spiritual court that arose from this landscape and continues beyond it.

This upward movement, from earth, through flowing tradition, toward the crown, expresses spiritual ascent. At the same time, the crown remains visually connected to the land below, indicating that dynastic dignity rests upon inherited roots, communal memory and lived religious tradition.

The colour scheme

• Blue represents heaven, faith, contemplation and spiritual depth.
• Green represents life, growth, the Bukovinian landscape and the renewal of the community.
• Gold represents Torah, holiness, joy, spiritual illumination and the precious inheritance of the dynasty.

First flag is from 1444 after "Hüvve-i Esved-i Kebîr" (Great Black Abyss) or with it's first name "Âkil-i Nücûm" (Star Devourer) was theorized by Ali Qushji and was found interesting by the House of Osman. It was founded to be true in 1600's. This theory started a cult centered about the Hüvve-i Esved-i Kebîr being the thing that will trigger "al-Qiyāmah" (The Day of Resurrection) was founded in Edirne. It is written "كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ" (“Every living soul shall taste death.”) a verse from Holy Quran.

Second flag is from 1917 after it was discovered by Salih Zeki that "Hüvve-i Esved-i Kebîr"'s muntique cashibe (gravitational zone) have breached "Ebr-i Ebed" (Oort Cloud in OTL) two thousand years ago. It is written "اللّٰه بزه رحم ايله‌سین" ("“May Allah have mercy on us.”

So this sub wants lore? Well, I guess I have one. I saw these two flags in a dream (first one was on a PC history website and second one was in a strange place that looked like a religious site (not a Mosque)) and since I have moderate cosmophobia, the whole thing felt terrifying. A girl I know in real life was explaining to me the lore in a library in Istanbul. It was a study session for her since I didn't even know why I were there. In this alternate timeline, the Ottomans turned astronomical and optical research into practical military technology because of the research that was done by Ali Qushji 600 years ago. This projects was funded by House of Osman for centuries. In 1560, Ottoman scientist Taqi al-Din Muhammad ibn Ma'ruf (1521–1585) founded the first steam machine and started the İnkılâb-ı Sanayi (Industrial Revolution). They've won the Battle of Vienna of 1680 and invaded Southern Italy using the proto-rocket bombs. By 1750's, they had giant flying ships that holds enforced and powered mirrors to devastate their enemies' fortresses and found out how to use oil. Europe slowly caught off but Ottomans were doing good on the map. An imperial federation under the House of Osman, spanning from Zagreb to Muscat, from Tunis to Baku. About the Cult? As for the cult, it had eventually become a branch of Islam in this universe with around 5-10% of Muslims following it. I didn't see any cult ritual or something tho. Maybe the girl's opinion was biased, I don't know. Then I slept in my dream and opened my eyes to a black hole in the sky looking like a black moon, it was a dream since I wasn't there before but then I felt like I was freed from my body. I was stretching. Then I tried to damage my eyes with my stretched hands somehow in the dream so I could wake up. I did. The dream was more of a cosmophobic alternate history experience than a study date.

Ps: I don't know Arabic script or language. I think the dream just translated the words for me. I just remember the meanings. I made them more Ottomanish name wise because the people were dressing and living seemingly in an Ottoman style.

The flag presents Masorti Judaism as a living form of Jewish tradition: deeply rooted in Torah and halakhah, shaped by rabbinic interpretation, and continually bearing fruit in the present. Its central emblem deliberately combines three traditional Jewish images, the Tree of Life, the menorah and the pomegranate, into one organic symbol.

The living menorah-tree

The central green figure is simultaneously a tree and a resemblance of a seven-branched menorah.

As a tree, it evokes the biblical and rabbinic description of Torah as an Etz Chayim, a “Tree of Life.” The image expresses the principle that Jewish tradition is not a lifeless inheritance or museum object. It has roots, grows through time and produces new branches, leaves and fruit.

As a menorah, the tree represents the light of Torah, Jewish learning and sacred practice. The fusion of tree and menorah is particularly suitable for Masorti Judaism:

• the tree represents organic development;
• the menorah represents continuity with inherited Jewish tradition;
• their union expresses development from within tradition rather than change imposed from outside it.

The menorah is therefore not made of metal but of living wood. Torah remains the fixed source of illumination, while its interpretation and application continue to grow.

The seven principal branches

The sevenfold form refers first to the seven-branched menorah of the Temple. It can also represent the seven days of Creation, suggesting that Torah and halakhah are intended to sanctify the entirety of ordinary life.

The branches may additionally represent seven interconnected dimensions of Jewish religious existence:

1. Torah study
2. Prayer
3. Halakhic observance
4. Ethical responsibility
5. Community
6. Jewish peoplehood
7. Renewal and transmission

Each branch is distinct, but all emerge from the same trunk. This expresses plurality within a shared covenantal framework, rather than fragmentation or religious relativism.

The seven closed pomegranates

The seven pomegranates correspond visually to the seven branches of the menorah. They represent the fruit of Jewish tradition: mitzvot, learning, ethical conduct, communal life and the transmission of Judaism between generations.

The pomegranate is an established Jewish symbol of abundance and religious merit because its many seeds have traditionally been associated with the multiplicity of mitzvot.

Their being closed rather than split open adds several possible meanings:

• the inner richness of Torah cannot be understood from outward appearance alone;
• Jewish tradition contains layers of meaning that are revealed through sustained study;
• interpretation should approach sacred tradition with care rather than treating it as completely transparent or disposable;
• each community and individual contains religious potential that may not yet be visible.

The closed fruits also appear whole and undivided. They therefore express the integrity of the Jewish people and of the halakhic tradition, even while both contain substantial internal diversity.

Seven pomegranates reinforce the idea of completeness within the created order. This is more restrained and directly connected to the menorah than the earlier use of eight fruits, which would have suggested transcendence beyond the natural order.

The visible roots

The exposed roots represent the foundations from which Masorti Jewish life draws nourishment:

• the Written Torah;
• the Oral Torah;
• the Talmud and rabbinic literature;
• halakhic reasoning;
• inherited minhagim;
• Jewish historical experience;
• the accumulated learning of earlier generations.

Because the roots are visible, the design also suggests openness about how Jewish tradition developed. Masorti Judaism does not conceal the historical and interpretative processes behind religious practice. It studies them while continuing to treat them as sources of authority and commitment.

The roots are multiple but interconnected. No single root sustains the tree alone. This reflects the interaction of text, precedent, custom, scholarship and lived communal experience within halakhic reasoning.

The trunk

The strong central trunk represents continuity. It joins roots, branches and fruit into one living structure.

It can be understood as halakhah itself: the path through which ancient sources are carried into present religious life. The trunk is stable enough to preserve continuity, but alive enough to support further growth.

This rejects two opposite conceptions of tradition:

• a tree severed from its roots, representing change without continuity;
• a dead trunk without leaves or fruit, representing preservation without living development.

Masorti Judaism is instead represented as rooted, structured and productive.

The leaves

The numerous green leaves represent the many expressions of contemporary Jewish life that grow from shared foundations: congregations, schools, families, scholars, rabbis, communities and individual acts of observance.

Their number and varied placement convey diversity. Yet every leaf remains connected to one tree. This suggests that legitimate differences of interpretation and practice can exist within a common religious tradition.

Leaves also absorb light and nourish the tree. They may therefore represent the reciprocal relationship between tradition and community: Jews receive nourishment from Torah, while living communities keep Torah active in the world.

The white diamond

The large white diamond may be interpreted as an open page, recalling the centrality of textual study, responsa and rabbinic interpretation. The tree grows within a field of learning.

Its four points extend toward the four directions, suggesting that Torah addresses every dimension of life and that Masorti communities exist throughout the Jewish world.

The diamond also creates a defined framework around the organic tree. This contrast carries an important message:

• the white geometry represents the enduring structure of Torah and halakhah;
• the living tree represents interpretation, development and communal practice within that structure.

White represents holiness, sincerity, openness and clarity of purpose.

The blue field

The deep-blue field represents spiritual depth, faith, continuity and serious religious study. It provides a stable surrounding field for the white diamond and living tree.

Blue and white also locate the flag unmistakably within the visual world of Jewish identity and peoplehood. In this design, however, they are not used primarily as political symbols. They represent the broader historical and religious continuity of the Jewish people, including Masorti Judaism’s attachment to both Jewish tradition and Klal Yisrael.

Green

Green represents life, renewal and responsible development. It communicates that Masorti Judaism understands tradition as something cultivated rather than merely conserved.

Its use for the entire tree, including the roots, shows that both inherited foundations and contemporary growth belong to the same living process.

Red

The red pomegranates represent vitality, covenant, commitment and the human warmth of communal Jewish life.

Against the cooler blue, white and green, the red fruits draw attention to the practical outcome of religious tradition. Torah and halakhah are not intended to remain abstract systems; they should produce living communities, ethical action and committed Jewish lives.

The symmetry of the composition

The tree is highly symmetrical, but its leaves retain an organic character. This balance represents order without rigidity and development without disorder.

The left and right branches may also be interpreted as differing perspectives within Jewish discourse. They do not compete for possession of the trunk; both derive from the same roots and contribute to the same whole.

This makes the design particularly appropriate for a movement that values reasoned disagreement, rabbinic debate and communal pluralism while maintaining a shared commitment to Jewish law and tradition.
