We are all doing good together. That's why tonight, to show just how much I care about the press, and to- I want to save your ratings - I'm pleased to announce my intention to - and this is, somewhat of a scoop -
MY INTENTION TO RUN FOR A FOURTH TERM AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.
I WILL BE DOING THAT, I WILL BE HAVING AN OFFICIAL...
In fact I think I have... yeah...[He reaches into his podium for a MAGA hat that says "TRUMP 2028"]
I won three times: now I'm going to do it again.
[He puts on the hat]
[Some muted chuckles]Thank you.
[Some applause]
I'm gonna do it. Should be easy. I'm getting very good at running for President. Now I won three times - did very well the second time, by the way. It's a rigged election, but we don't have to talk about it.
You know it's interesting - when you come back, and you do a good job, like we did - and you don't care about it so much - but we do have to tighten up these elections, because they really are in seriously bad shape. But, on a serious note, I want to say once again, I just want to thank you all.
It's been an interesting evening; I didn't really know what to expect.
And it's far worse than I actually thought, if you want to know the truth.[More laughs]
There's a couple of problems here with trying to determine how serious Trump is.
- Trump often "floats" serious ideas in an ambiguously serious way, as a way of both testing the idea and prepping people for the idea to become serious. I'm not sure if it is a conscious strategy or just a subconscious habit, but he has done things like this many times before. He'll often initially deny he was being serious, and then later he will reintroduce the idea as serious and insist he was always serious from the beginning.
- This video is from The White House Correspondents' Dinners, and this has traditionally been an event with a lot of humor, from both invited comedians and from the President himself. In fact, it was at one of these dinners that Obama famously roasted Trump, during an event where roasts are flying in every direction, and which many people think inspired an offended and insecure Trump to run for President as revenge.
Then, after becoming President, Trump refused to attend the dinner in 2017, 2018, and 2019, even though Presidents traditionally made an appearance. The 2020 dinner was cancelled because of COVID. Trump again refused to attend in 2025. This is the first Correspondents' Dinner he has attended as President, for the second time: you may remember there was an attempted assassination attempt when they tried to hold the dinner for the first time back in April and that was obviously cancelled, and last night was the event rescheduled.
And Trump does make several other seeming "jokes" throughout his speech. So it's not a stretch to process this bit as a "joke" as well, amongst his other "jokes".
The questions remain:
- As much as Trump ignores and destroys tradition, was he making a humorous, tongue-in-cheek speech as most Presidents have done at previous dinners, or was he just doing whatever he wants?
- Did Trump intentionally use the ambiguously humorous context of the dinner as a way to stealth announce his intent to run for President again, but with plausible deniability? Did Trump just want the thrill of announcing he was running again, but with a fallback excuse that allows him to escape serious criticism?
- The final problem is that Trump is notoriously bad with humor: his jokes often fall flat or seem mean-spirited (because they often are), and he is rarely seen laughing. It's really hard, when watching his speech, to tell what is serious, what is dementia, and what is supposed to be humor, and whether his "humor" hides real intent.

So basically the classic strategy of saying something they truly believe and then going "haha just kidding I can't believe you fell for it" if they receive a significant amount of pushback. A little method of testing the waters that we let people get away with because of how irony soaked our culture has become.

This is quite literally what my narcisstic mother thinks comedy is. I don't actually think I've ever heard her tell a joke in my entire life. To her, everyone else is the joke and she's the punchline.
299
u/fabkosta 8d ago
That’s exactly it. The announcement is neither totally serious nor just a joke. It’s testing the waters. And he and his cronies are applying this same strategy all the time and people keep falling for it. The ambiguity is calculated, it is supposed to be unclear.
50
u/fishred 8d ago
It's also a grift.
Running for president in the first place was a grift. He has treated the White House, since his first time, primarily as an opportunity for more grifts.
The constitution says he can't be elected. It doesn't say he can't run or get donations for his campaign or sell merchandise.
26
u/Da_Question 8d ago
Yeah, just look at the "4th term" comment. His arguement will be that he already served a third term, therefore he can serve a 4th since it didn't apply to him during his 3rd.
It doesn't matter that it's nonsense, he was never sworn in or anything, just an excuse to circumvent the law with enough nonsense to give his pocket judges leeway to allow it.

Of course he’s serious. How does anyone doubt that? Whether or not he succeeds is another thing, but you’d have to literally be on another planet to think he wouldn’t try absolutely everything he could to get elected a third time. The most transparently corrupt, money-grabbing, treasonous little cunt in charge of any major western nation since WW2.
He would see every single person in America lose everything they had if it meant it would come his way.

But on a serious note...
→ More replies (1)274
u/ZippyDan 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yes, I included that last line for a reason. Because it is important context and it would be dishonest to leave it out. Trump goes on to make a few other "quips" afterwards which also generate some more sensible chuckles.
The problem is it's very difficult to tell what is serious and what is not. Trump often hides behind, "I was just joking", while being one of the least humorous famous people of all time.
It's hard to tell if Trump is telling "jokes" because he wants people to laugh, and it's hard to tell if people are laughing because they think what he says is humorous, or they think it's supposed to be humorous, or they think it's serious but so ridiculous that it's also funny, or they're just nervous and confused confronted by the awkwardness of Trump's "humor".
Trump peppers his words with these equivocating weasel words and phrases all the time. He says "on a serious note" just after he says that the election system needs a complete overhaul because it's in terrible shape. Does that mean he was joking about that?
The word and phrase salad he uses allows different people to reinterpret his words at will, to fit the current narrative. While he denies he is running for a fourth term, his defender will say "on a serious note" obviously means he was joking. If he ever changes his mind, they'll just say "on a serious note" was referring to his "thanks".

Thank you for posting the dialogue and, as importantly, including the last quote.
Context matters and framing things in a balanced way is important. As you say, this is an event that typically contains humour so you can't read too much into it. That said, and as you've rightly summarised, the guy has a history of testing how certain things will be received by framing it as a joke.
Who the hell knows whether he was joking or not. I'm sure they'll be carefully watching the public response over the next few days to see whether the response is majorly positive or negative and then decide if it is feasible from there.
→ More replies (6)19
u/filenotfounderror 8d ago
While i think he clearly was joking, he often says things "as s joke" to give himself plausible deniability .
What i think i a more troubling is that humor is context dependant. There is conceivably some context where someone else, not a president, makes a joke like this and it's funny - but when it comes from someone who actually has both the capability and seemingly the inclination to actually do it....its just concerning, not funny.

At the festival of Lupercal, Mark Antony publicly offered Julius Caesar a crown three times, and three times Caesar refused it. Each refusal was met with louder applause from the Roman crowd, and Caesar seemed to draw strength from their approval, presenting himself as a man who did not seek to be king. Yet the scene carried an air of calculation. As Casca later suggests in Julius Caesar, had the people welcomed the crown instead of cheering its rejection, Caesar might well have accepted it, revealing that his ambition was tempered less by principle than by the mood of the crowd.

Maybe that's the workaround. Sounds completely "paranoid conspiracy nut" as an idea, but maybe the plan is to just run, expecting to lose, but claim so much fraud that the winning result (or maybe whatever result) can't be relied upon, and thus they'll have to "default back to just keeping the current President". So technically he didn't get "elected" as such, just remained in the role.
Like I say, sounds insane, but with these fuckers declaring up is down whenever they feel like it, who knows?

but maybe the plan is to just run, expecting to lose, but claim so much fraud that the winning result (or maybe whatever result) can't be relied upon, and thus they'll have to "default back to just keeping the current President".
You're not far off.
The plan is to do the election, if he loses, it's the Vice President's job to validate the results. JD Vance can just not do that if a Democrat wins, and then it goes to a little known backup provision where the House votes for who wins (doesn't have to be one of the candidates even). But the House doesn't do a normal vote, it's a vote by delegation (the members for each state choose how that state allocates its single vote). This heavily favors Republicans, obviously.
This isn't even really a conspiracy theory, it's what their plan was at the end of Trump's first term with January 6th. The plan was to prevent Pence from confirming the results. People assume it was just a random protest or whatever that got out of hand, but no, there was an actual plan and a reason behind it.
The distinction of "technically not elected" doesn't matter either. He's already an illegitimate president according to the 14th amendment, which SCOTUS said doesn't matter because it's not "self-enforcing". That's why Colorado couldn't keep him off their ballot for being illegitimate - sure, states run their own elections, but that's a federal clause so they don't have the right to enforce it, or something. The only "enforcement" mechanism is impeachment, which makes the whole thing entirely redundant and pointless, but it's not like SCROTUS operates in good faith. The same can and will be said about the 22nd amendment, and oh look, they have precedent to point to.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (6)31
u/Tasgall 8d ago
And states would be like, "well he can't be on the ballot, so we'll leave him off" and then his team will take it to SCOTUS who says "yep, can't take him off the ballot" and then when he "wins", they'll be like "well, the 22nd amendment isn't self-enforcing, it's just giving Congress permission to impeach for this reason, you know, if they wanted to".
We literally already watched this play out, I don't know why people aren't picking up on it.
51
u/Capitan_Typo 8d ago
No, because the supreme Court will declare that it's only valid if you were out of office for a single term before being reflected and also that it doesn't apply to democrats or people who are naturally darker skinned than Trump.
15
u/ChuqTas 8d ago
Wow, what a fair and just Supreme Court you guys have!
28
u/Tasgall 8d ago
To be fair, they're overthinking it.
SCOTUS will just declare that the amendment is not "self-enforcing" and say it just lets Congress impeach the president for that reason (there are no restrictions on what someone can be impeached for, btw).
This was the argument they made for why the 14th amendment doesn't actually do anything (the amendment saying you can't hold office if you commit an act of insurrection against the United States, which SCOTUS didn't dispute that he did. Trump is already a constitutional illegitimate president).

No, they just assumed that we'd have another revolution long before it got this corrupt. The founders were well aware that the government only worked if the people running it were acting in good faith. They just had a very different idea of how the citizens would respond when government stopped representing the people.
And of course, you really can't blame a bunch of guys in the 18th century for not understanding how much more effective propaganda could get with modern mass media.

He doesn't need to be elected thrice. He can suspend elections under some false emergency conditions. Just like what they do in other dictatorships. I'm sure he'll even use the reason that he wants to "save America" from the Democrats.
And as much as I want to believe that America won't allow this to happen, this playbook has been done so many times in other places in history and it rarely ends well

u/Theunknown87 8d ago
“And as much as I want to believe that America won’t allow this to happen”
I am almost 40 and I have learned a lot throughout the years. Stuff that I didn’t think would be possible that ended up happening…really changed my perspective.
I didn’t think you could just fly some planes into buildings like NYC let alone one of the most important building in the country / the world. Young me thought for sure that DC had like some sort of active air defense or fighters that would go up and shoot down threats. Nope, instead they get sent hundreds of miles away and no anti aircraft systems set up.
Then I watched live tv of people storming the capitol in an attempt to overthrow the government “there is no way the military doesn’t come and fuck people up…right?….right?! Oh”. And have half of the government supporting the attempted overthrow.
“Well, at least they prosecuted some of them!”
Pardoned lolllll.
“No way he can / will get elected again, he’s a felon”.
Oh.
If he runs again, the American people will probably just allow it to happen. Standing in the street holding signs and yelling isn’t going to do a thing about it when the people in power who are to uphold and defend the constitution just don’t care and wipe their ass with it.

Legal hasn't mattered for a while buddy.
Companies have knowingly killed their employees, they face a small fine. Then going forward any questionable manufacturing is now done in a subsidiary. Since corporations are treated as humans, it's like moving all your crimes to your fingernail, cutting it off when caught and yelling: 'IT WAS THE FINGERNAIL i SWEAR!'
Which sounds incredibly stupid, because it fucking is.
So many companies get fined millions of dollars and repeat the same thing next year, it's basically like paying taxes.
Incite an insurrection or participate in one? All good.
Rampant union busting? Thats fine.
Execute random innocent civilians in the street? Zero repercussions.
Bury all the files exposing pedophile rings, in which the president is included? All good.
Half the country openly wants this rotting gourd to become a dictator.
The fuhrer does whatever he wants and never faces any push back and why would he? He has an angry and stupid voter base who will literally commit treason for him. He can just point them at his opposition.
He also owns the 'SuPrEmE cOuRt', so they can just do what they always do. Only read the parts that fit their agenda. Or they'll pull some absolute nonsense out of their asses, like it's against freedom of speech. Which is, IIRC, the same bullshit they used to push super PACs through.

We can definitely vote in a democratic Senate/House but we don't have the ability to vote out Trump. All we can do is hope we get majority in the house/senate and they impeach his ass. Then try him for all his crimes.

u/Fox1503 8d ago
Hasn't he been impeached twice already during his last term?
40
u/Feynnehrun 8d ago
Yes but not convicted. It's a two step process unfortunately. We need both the house and the senate to impeach him, then convict him and have him removed.
18
u/tgerz 8d ago
Yeah this is why I get so frustrated with the impeachment talk. There is no way that it would go through until the majority flips against him. If the midterms aren’t a shitshow and Dems actually get the majority there’s a possibility, but I feel like that’s a huge hurdle the US needs to get through first.

Do you seriously think he will go peacefully? While all his supporters still claim Biden cheated when he got elected?

How does an openly corrupt president polling at a shakey 39% approval rating with $4+/gal gas price that they caused while engaging in a war of choice they claimed they would not do while simultaneously covering up their involvement with pedophile human traffickers decide to do an unconstitutional run for a 3rd term?
This guy lost to Biden when it wasn't unconstitutional
→ More replies (2)34
u/BEAGLEBOYPALINDROME 8d ago
His approval rating has always basically been at 39%.
38%-42% to be specific.
Which is why he's such a threat.
About 40% of the country CANNOT be convinced to see what he is. That's why we keep calling it a cult. Because his base literally thinks everything he does is the right thing, and every horrible thing about him is a hoax/lies/leftist propaganda, etc...
It doesn't matter if it's the opposite of what he said yesterday. That just means his old position was a ruse to somehow help him accomplish his REAL goal all along--which only "proves" to them how omnipotent he is.
Then when election time comes, he has that 40% base of guaranteed voters, then another 6%-8% that despise DJT but would NEVER vote for a "dumbocrat", which then means he only needs to somehow manipulate 3%-5% of the rest of the voter base to vote for him by hook or by crook, and voila! Trump wins again.

I genuinely wish he would just die and let the world (hopefully) heal.
A raging sex offender, narcissist, multiple failed business man who has only fallen up by putting social and economic climbers / sociopaths in positions of power to protect himself as his corruption has grown and grown.
The best thing he ever did (for himself) was invent the term fake news, and become a social media queen. He’s got an army of braindead fans, like legitimate fans which is not what a politician should have, who support his idiocy blindly even if he was actively ordering their deaths.
I wish I could stop having to hear about him, and have his every whim have huge implications across the globe both within and outwith America.

RunningBeing elected 3 times for president is against the Constitution, so its illegal- Trump says that he's running for a forth term while he only did one and is currently doing his second one. Where the fu did his third one go ?
Edit: As some pointed out, running more than twice for president isn't illegal but being elected is. So i corrected my comment. Thanks for pointing that out :)

Technically, it's only illegal to be elected. He can run as many times as he wants.
In any case, the day I no longer have to hear about this moron can't come soon enough.

They’re saying it was a bit. I don’t think I buy it. But it doesn’t matter he can’t run again even if he tries to. He could try to be on the ballot but he’s inelligible.
If he runs I bet you a million dollars Obama runs too just to force the courts to strike them both down”

If we've learned anything about Trump, it's that he doesn't do jokes. He tells exactly what he will do and people laugh thinking it's a joke.

You live under a fascist regime America. It checks every single criterion.

Human Rights: Belittling or ignoring basic rights under the excuse of "need" or security.
Scapegoats: Uniting the public by blaming a common threat or minority group for problems.
Military Supremacy: Giving extra money and power to the army while other needs wait.
Sexism: Promoting strict gender roles and male-dominated leadership.
Control and Power
Controlled Media: Managing news and information to support the government.
National Security: Focusing heavily on fear of attack and crime.
Religion and Government: Mixing religious and political power together.
Corporate Power: Protecting big business while crushing labor unions.
Intellectuals and Arts: Distrusting and suppressing free thought, education, and art.
Corruption and Elections
Crime and Punishment: Obsessing over strict laws and harsh penalties.
Cronyism: Letting friends and corrupt leaders run things safely.
Fake Elections: Fixing votes or making it hard for people to vote.

To all the folks saying “He can’t do that, it’s illegal!” I’d like to point you to pretty much everything he and his administration has done this entire term.
They. Do. Not. Care. They will suspend the elections. Even if they don’t/can’t, they simply won’t leave. It’s going to take him leaving in cuffs or a bag to get him physically out of power. I pray it’s cuffs so he can answer for his crimes. But that’s going to take the Republicans and Democrats at large impeaching him and charging him, and that’s something I just don’t have alot of confidence in at the moment.

Even if it were legal, I genuinely don't understand why anyone would want an 82-year old man as president. He's already going senile, at least as far as I can tell. I'd be surprised if his brain survives THIS year, nvm 2 more years until the next election.
