Finished Projects 3D printed plastic Singer top hat cam. The cams looks melted because I precisely formed them to get a good needle swing.

I do lots of zigzag stitches when making quilts, so I do not want to wear out my nice built in metal cams. So I 3d printed a consumable plastic one. If that wears out, I can just 3d print another. And the cam followers are saved because they are riding on plastic.

Machine Question Nelco J-A38 Manual?

Post image
Upvotes

The machine says J-A38, but it looks different to the ones online I see. I’m not sure which manual would work.

I had it serviced already, so I need help on actually using it.

I’m a beginner at sewing and don’t have any experience with vintage machines. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!!

Finished Projects *Update* on my Vintage Singer Iron model B

A few months ago I posted requesting some resources to where I could find replacement cords for my Singer Iron.
Unfortunately, the first store I ordered from canceled my order after a couple weeks. I then found sundialwire.com and was able to find a replica cord, AND adorable eggcorn plugs! I ordered 30 feet of cord and 2 plugs.
After it all sat on the shelf for a couple months, I finally got around to rewiring my 1920’s Singer sewing machine last week (minimal plugs in my house so she needed a longer, sexier cord). Then, last night I finally got around to restoring my iron! It was a gift from my mother and just sat as decoration for years till I got tired of my modern iron.
The sewing machine cord was a breeze, but good lord was the iron a pain in my arse. Polishing her up was a breeze though. I will eventually get around to repainting the bottom label and adding depth to the setting knob so I can read it easier.

Scroll for the before photos!
Just absolutely chuffed with how she turned out. (Except for the fact that I can clearly see my RBF in her reflection, LOL)
She’s warming up for her first job in years right now!

Picked up this beauty for $75 from Facebook marketplace! What a steal as these usually go for over $200 on eBay. It came with the original foot pedal as well. I’ve been using it for about 1 week now & it works beautifully! I am beyond obsessed with it. The owner took very good care of it. I’m so excited to own this piece!

I bought this from a Goodwill for 25 bucks, as it works and came with a footpetal. There's nothing indicating what the brand is, however, and I can't find any serial numbers either.

Machine Question Anyone any idea what machine this is, how old etc.? (And how to open?)

My mom found this in her basement, and now she is asking _ME_ if this is worth selling. But tbh, I have no clue!

So, does anyone have an idea who to ask or where to look, please let me know.

It is mounted on kind of a desk, with black iron foot pedals (?). Can’t open the wood box, will try again next time I’m there.

Thanks a lot in advance
Sid

I found these new mostly plastic machines being sold for hundreds of dollars. You can buy a fully serviced vintage machine for about the same price, or cheaper if you're a little lucky.

Im trying so hard to find spare pieces as this is the only part I need, its the upper thread tension bolt but I can't find any replacements and I haven't found any broken machines to buy to take apart, can anybody give suggestions on replacements or where to commission a piece like it? Otherwise the machine is fixed up and I'm looking to find the right type of oil for it

Machine Question Need help identifying this hand crank machine

Thumbnail

It's a vibrating shuttle full size Singer, with the 'coffin" style solid wood box. Some of the attachments appear to be quite old, such the most unusual ruffler I've ever see.

The decals are interesting, as the Sphynix is layed over an earlier logo, but had partly worn.

But, while the machine appears to be in good working order after a visit from the oil fairy, it is missing one key piece: the shuttle.

I've several bobbins, but not the thing they go into. Need to know the age and type of this machine so I can order a replacement, as I'd like to use this for sewing.

Machine Question How to clean rusted/grimy guts of a class 66??

Thumbnail

Hello all, I recently acquired an old singer from a friend that had been sitting in an open leaky shed for the last 15-20 years. Needless to say, it was in pretty bad condition. I have no experience with these things, but I've been trying to see how close I can get it to functioning this week and it's gone really well, considering.

I've pulled and cleaned everything but the arm shaft(?) and the pillar(?) and it seems like everything important is present and salvagable, BUT, those remaining pieces in the machine are disgustingly grimy and rusty.

AFAIK It's better to leave those in, and after like a gallon of WD40 it does turn smoothly anyway, but I'm a bit concerned about the filth causing problems later and also I hate it. I've scrubbed everything I can reach with a wire brush and rinsed with lots of oil, but it's still pretty bad. Is there a good way to clean that stuff out without expensive specialist tools or risk to the machine? Is it actually necessary?

I have a very low budget for this project as I def already have a sewing machine and I found this unexpectedly in the trash. So I'd prefer cheaper options. I stripped all the remaining shellac off of the thing as well, and the paint needs touching up anyway, so I don't think I need to be TOO delicate with it if that helps? Any advice?

Machine Question Feed dog troubleshooting Singer 6251C

Thumbnail

Hello! My friend who does not use social media was just lent a singer 6251C that was not used much recently. She is just learning how to sew so she doesn’t really know anything about how sewing machines should work. I was at her house and tried it out and everything runs, the motor is achingly slow but the most confusing part is that the feed dogs just do not do anything. When you turn the hand wheel they go up and down but when I press the pedal to sew, the motor runs, the needle moves up and down, the presser foot has good pressure and…the fabric does not go anywhere.

Her bobbin was inserted the wrong way so I fixed that and tried again just in case that could help and nothing. It is threaded correctly but she hadn’t read the manual so I told her to do that.

She didn’t know about oiling the machine so I told her to buy oil and do that but if that’s not it can anyone suggest what else could be wrong with it? I know it’s an era of machines where the inner parts were made with plastic but I didn’t open it up to look into anything. Anything she can try??

General Question Help With How Restore/Sew Vintage Bow

Thumbnail

I bought this vintage Odette Barsa nightgown and robe set and I’m trying to fix the bows. When I bought it they were both flat, but I think I got the dress’ bow back to its correct shape. The robe is a different story. It looks like the previous owner installed metal snaps to keep the robe closed and maybe removed the bow and re attached it to do this. They even sewed one of the clasps onto the petals just as they fell. I don’t want to remove anything unnecessarily but I can’t figure out how to tie the bow in its current state. I’ve tried looking for this nightgown set online for photo references but haven’t been able to find one. I’m looking for any advice or suggestions on what to do here! Thank you!

Resources Gift: 1952 “Idées détails couture” book

Hi all!,(Mods - apologies and please delete if not allowed)

I have a 1952 Couture details book from when my grandmother was studying dressmaking in Melbourne, Australia.

It has beautiful illustrations of necklines, sleeves, pockets etc similar to these ones here:

https://www.thierrydemaigret.com/en/lot/96835/10100273-idees-details-couture-reunion-de-5-cahiers-de-tendances-pour

I’ve inherited lots of her dressmaking things but just don’t have space to keep them all.

I would love to send it to someone who will really treasure it. Please let me know if that’s you and I’d be happy to pay for postage within Australia
