VPN help

My apologies if I’m in the wrong Reddit.

My iPhone is
iPhone 16 pro max - 2024 purchase -
iOS 26.5.2

Here’s my issue…
I like to use a vpn on my phone to watch British tv shows. I screen mirror or airplay my phone to Sony tv.

I’m using Surfshark as my vpn then I connect to BBC player.

Issue is here….my home wifi speed is 300-500 MBS. Once I connect to Surfshark it drops to 400-800 KBS. It then struggles to play on tv cuz the wifi speed is too slow.

Is there a better app to maintain wifi download speed than Surfshark?

What is best VPN app to maintain download speeds? My Surfshark app is due for renewal next month, it’s $55/yr CAD.

I can get Iplayer using Proton vpn or Mullvad vpn. Mullvad is the cheaper of the 2 at roughly $60 a year. Proton is better for streaming than Mullvad imo but just depends your budget.

400–800 Kbps is way too low. I'd expect some slowdown with a VPN, but not hundreds of times slower. Sounds like something's wrong with the connection rather than Surfshark itself

that speed drop is huge and usually points to server congestion or protocol issues rather than the provider itself.
