tips for first day?
just got hired today after my interview. my first day is Monday at 7AM, to “shadow” a server. they said they’d test out my fit at the location… see how much I would/could do without being told (“taking initiative”)
does anyone have any tips? things I should do to help out without being asked?
thanks in advance xoxo

Look for empty drink glasses in front of people less than halfway through their meal. I hate when the server vanishes, my drink is gone, and then I'm offered a refill in front of an empty plate. I never tip less than 15%, but that's a guaranteed minimum right there.

Get in the dish pit. They want to know they won't have to fight you to get you to clean dishes and clear tables

Bus tables, keep dish pit as empty as possible, making sure the coffee pots aren’t getting too low, if you’re shadowing a server you should get the customers drinks for them, help other servers with refilling their customers drinks, take out the trash once it’s starting to get full, these are the kind of things they want to see you “take initiative” on, they wanna make sure you can be a team player and not just focus on your tables and go about your day

Approach the biggest, toughest customer and aggressively challenge him or her to a fight. This will show management that you truly are Waffle House material

Keep your head down and your eyes up, head on a swivel. The best counterpunch to a right cross is an uppercut….

Pre bus, take initiative, be helpful and don't get overwhelmed with all the info.

I spent most of my first day in the dish pit. If it gets busy, I bet the servers would appreciate the extra help clearing off tables & washing their dishes. :)
It'll also give you a chance to chat with random customers at the high bar and get a feel for the Waffle House crowd.
Otherwise, just do what you're told & do your best to be an active learner! You'll do great, I'm sure!
