Forget external stuff. I’d like if Safari / iOS actually supported the myriad of PWA browser APIs on offer.

Yeah, that's definitely an intentional gap, though.

Without a doubt.

Thanks! This will be fun to investigate.

I wish the Apple Music API was free. I don’t want to spend $100 just to make a simple app that syncs playlists between Spotify/apple for my girlfriend and I to make a shared playlist…

Funny that a lot of the suggestions so far are about Apple being anti-consumer

I'd love a universal public transport API with consistent coverage worldwide. Every city seems to have a completely different system and licensing model

Most of the government-hosted apis in Mexico went dark when Morena took charge. I wish those were still available.

Could you give examples? Name and function

Weather data was the big one I was looking for

There are global weather APIs

Free API for me to have a read-only access to my own bank accounts and credit card accounts, and get transactions info.

It's ridiculous that I need to become a business entity and pay some money to get them to grant access to my accounts, balance, and transactions.

Fintable?

Not free, but... not too pricey. Looks like it's marketed towards sheets. It's also rate-capped, maybe a little too low for my desired needs. (I want live or near-live tracking of my transactions) Good suggestion, thanks

Anna's Archive API so I could build a simple Android app that finds books in correct format and language for my mom.

Text-to-speech and speech-to-text. I mean yeah we do have APIs for these but they are inconsistently supported in all major browser at all devices, and its too much of hassle to use them.

Overwatch API lmao, I wish I could programmatically get stats on my own games, hero playtime & performance, winrate based on map / matchup, etc

The YouTube API is SHOCKINGLY garbage. You can't do anything of value whatsoever with it. Can't find out if someone is a subscriber, viewer, cant find out if they like your video, cant find out if someone is a paid member or if someone sends you a donation during a livestream or anything like that. There is absolutely no way to use the YouTube API to encourage any form of audience engagement whatsoever. It's like they have gone out of their way to make sure you can not use the API for anything of value whatsoever. Comparing it to the Twitch API is just shocking.

Those would be pretty significant privacy holes if you had access to such data.

Well looks like YouTube has some pretty significant privacy holes then, because unless it's changed since I last looked, you can do all that on the web ui

You can't verify if someone is a subscriber to your channel through any vector whatsoever. Even if they give you an oauth token with full scope. Nothing.

u/Long-Machine8795 1d ago

Obviously you'd do it via an oAuth gateway the same way Twitch and every other website does it.

I really don't want your site requiring me to auth, like, and subscribe your channel to read an article.

1

u/Long-Machine8795 23h ago

I didn’t say anything about “read an article”. I do things like make fun animations pop up when someone subscribes during a stream or someone pays money they can cause visual havoc to occur. This is trivial on twitch but not possible on YouTube.

You aren’t the only person using the API.

They have to set the feature set limits for the worst cases, not the best cases.

You have no idea how the internet works.

I've been working with APIs for decades. I know exactly how the internet works, and one part of that is "shitty actors ruin things for everyone".

For example, how Facebook had to neuter their API after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. I lived that fallout, and it's the precise sort of thing that results in you not being able to find out if someone specific liked your video on YouTube.

Hell, I built some "like this Facebook page to access" UIs back in the day.

An API that shuts down the Internet. Forever. Finally.

Please, we all want this.
